A registry-based approach for estimating county-level race disparities in breast cancer mortality: an analysis in Georgia.

Despite similar incidence rates, nationwide breast cancer mortality is 40% higher among non-Hispanic Black (NHB) than non-Hispanic White (NHW) women. The racial disparity persists even among women with early-stage disease, prognostically favorable subtypes, and indicators of high socioeconomic status and is not evenly distributed throughout the US. Understanding geographic differences may provide additional insight into the drivers of the disparity.

The Memphis Metropolitan Statistical Area ranks second in the US for HIV incidence, yet only ∼60% of individuals link to treatment within 1 month of diagnosis. This study aimed to identify barriers and strategies for implementing rapid ART initiation in Memphis.

The "Silent" Threat: Group G Streptococcus Peritonitis in Peritoneal Dialysis.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a therapy for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). PD carries an increased risk of peritonitis, often secondary to poor technique. A small subset of patients may present with "silent" peritonitis, or peritonitis in the absence of fever and abdominal pain, making diagnosis and treatment challenging.

Background: Understanding the epidemiological parameters and transmission dynamics of Lassa fever, a significant public health threat in west Africa caused by the rodent-borne Lassa virus, is crucial for informing evidence-based interventions and outbreak response strategies. Depression and heart failure are highly comorbid, with up to 35% of heart failure patients suffering from comorbid depression. Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) serve as a major lifeline for patients with heart failure; however, despite the drastic improvement in cardiac function following LVAD implantation, up to 24% of LVAD recipients suffer from depression. Depression management in LVAD recipients is often complicated by the recipient's increased risk for antidepressant side effects, adverse drug reactions, and inability to safely receive certain interventional psychiatry therapies, as the LVAD is either a relative or absolute contraindication.

During the last decade, there has been an increasing interest in the rationalisation of how structural changes stabilise (or destabilise) diradical systems. Demonstrated herein is that indolocarbazole (ICz) diradicals, substituted with dicyanomethylene (DCM) groups, are useful motifs for dynamic covalent chemistry by self-assembling from isolated monomers to cyclophane structures. The comparison of ICz-based systems substituted with DCM groups in - or -positions (p-ICz-CN and m-ICz-CN) and their short-chain carbazole analogues (p-Cz-CN and m-Cz-CN) may identify new potential design strategies for stimuli-responsive materials.

How well do connectivity tools agree over the full life cycle? A case study of Irish Sea plaice Pleuronectes platessa Linnaeus, 1758.

Adult plaice in the Irish Sea have distinct traits that reflect the spawning locations that could suggest a number of different populations. However, do connectivity pathways support this concept? Different tools are directed at measuring exchange or connectivity between different life-history stages, and the challenge is to integrate the signals to obtain full life-cycle estimates. Collectively, the different methods reveal stable connectivity between known spawning and nursery grounds, with sufficient exchange to maintain a single population with weak genetic structure.

Twenty-five emerging questions when detecting, understanding, and predicting future fish distributions in a changing climate.

The 2023 Annual Symposium of the Fisheries Society of the British Isles hosted opportunities for researchers, scientists, and policy makers to reflect on the state of art of predicting fish distributions and consider the implications to the marine and aquatic environments of a changing climate. The outcome of one special interest group at the Symposium was a collection of questions, organized under five themes, which begin to capture the state of the field and identify priorities for research and management over the coming years. The five themes were Physiology, Mechanisms, Detect and Measure, Manage, and Wider Ecosystems.

On-demand auxeticity and co-existing pre-tension induced compression stage in a sandwich design with kinematically constrained 3D suture tiles.

By incorporating concepts from auxeticity, kinematic constraints, pre-tension induced compression (PIC), and suture tessellations, tiled sandwich composites are designed, demonstrating behaviors attributed to the synergy between auxeticity and pre-tension induced contact and compression, simultaneously triggered by a threshold strain. The designs can theoretically achieve on-demand Poisson's ratio in the widest range (-∞, +∞), and once triggered, the Poisson's ratio is stable under large deformation. Also, once the overall strain goes beyond the threshold, the designs enter into a PIC stage, ensuring the middle soft layer takes the tensile load, while the tiles are under compression via contact and the 3D articulation of the tooth-channel pairs.

Atypical Antipsychotics and the Risk of Sudden Cardiac Death among Individuals Receiving Maintenance Hemodialysis.

Issue Addressed: Whilst there is a relationship between health literacy and health outcomes, the importance of social and personal demographic characteristics remains understudied., Identifying the factors responsible for creating health literacy challenges would help ensure that responses are tailored to individual or community needs.

Issue Addressed: The World Health Organisation is prioritising health literacy development to address the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Empowering pregnant women and mothers through health literacy development may help to reduce the intergenerational impact of NCDs. However, significant gaps exist in understanding the health literacy needs of this priority population globally.

Oscillatory Neural Correlates of Police Firearms Decision-Making in Virtual Reality.

We investigated the neural signatures of expert decision-making in the context of police training in a virtual reality-based shoot/don't shoot scenario. Police officers can use stopping force against a perpetrator, which may require using a firearm and each decision made by an officer to discharge their firearm or not has substantial implications. Therefore, it is important to understand the cognitive and underlying neurophysiological processes that lead to such a decision.

Direction-dependent bending resistance of 3D printed bio-inspired composites with asymmetric 3D articulated tiles.

Inspired by the protective armors in nature, composites with asymmetric 3D articulated tiles attached to a soft layer are designed and fabricated via a multi-material 3D printer. The bending resistance of the new designs are characterized via three-point bending experiments. Bending rigidity, strength, and final deflection of the designs are quantified and compared when loaded in two different in-plane and two different out-of-plane directions.

A systematic scoping review and content analysis of organizational health literacy responsiveness assessment tools.

The characteristics of health literate organizations have been variously described in recognition that it is important for organizations to respond to the diversity of people's health literacy strengths and challenges. A systematic scoping review was conducted to identify, assess and classify international self-assessment tools aimed at measuring the capability of organizations to embody health literate characteristics. Following the JBI Scoping Manual, a search was conducted in six databases and identified 2693 articles.

Integrating the Teaching and Assessment of Moral Reasoning into Undergraduate Medical Education to Advance Health Equity.

Moral reasoning skills among medical students have regressed despite the implementation of ethics teachings in medical education curricula. This inability to retain moral reasoning capability is attributed to difficulty transitioning to the principled thinking stage of moral reasoning as well as worsening of ethical decision-making skills during clerkship education due to the "hidden curriculum." Prior studies have examined the efficacy of individual strategies for moral education, but there is insufficient analysis comparing multiple educational interventions and moral reasoning assessment tools.
