Background And Purpose: Physiotherapists worldwide are encouraged to integrate evidence-based practice (EBP) to provide safer and effective services. However, for professionals to consolidate this practice, the contact with EBP must begin at the university. In this study, we aimed to map and analyze the distribution of EBP courses and their characteristics in undergraduate physiotherapy programs in Brazil.

The potability of water, including underground sources, is constantly affected by human activities. To assess water quality and water security in rural and urban areas of southern Brazil, a quantitative, retrospective analysis of water samples collected monthly by the Brazilian health authorities (19,687 samples from 2013 to 2021) was performed. In rural areas, 5,979 water samples (77.

The objective of this work was to isolate a polysaccharide similar to pectin from leaves, not yet reported in the literature, and to evaluate its antioxidant, cytotoxic and immunomodulatory profile. Pectin was extracted from the leaves in three stages, organic solvent followed by acidified water and ethanol precipitation. With the pectin obtained, the physicochemical characterization of the molecule was carried out using high-performance liquid chromatography, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (C and H) and different thermal and elemental analysis.

Macrophage (Mϕ) polarization is an essential phenomenon for the maintenance of homeostasis and tissue repair, and represents the event by which Mϕ reach divergent functional phenotypes as a result to specific stimuli and/or microenvironmental signals. Mϕ can be polarized into two main phenotypes, M1 or classically activated and M2 or alternatively activated. These two categories diverge in many aspects, such as secreted cytokines, markers of cell surface, and biological functions.

Radon and progeny are potentially relevant in radioecological studies, as they contribute more than half of the exposure to environmental radiation. The investigation of Rn in internal environments of municipalities of Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte in Brazil was carried out using passive dosimetry with α Espec-222, installed in environments selected by the history of natural radiative occurrences. The monitoring time was eight months to consider seasonal influence.

Fungal infections are the most common secondary infections in debilitated individuals in a state of chronic disease or immunosuppression. Despite this, most fungal infections are neglected, mainly due to the lower frequency of their more severe clinical forms in immunocompetent individuals with a healthy background. However, over the past few years, several cases of severe fungal infections in healthy individuals have provoked a change in the epidemiological dynamics of fungal infections around the world, both due to recurrent outbreaks in previously infrequent regions and the greater emergence of more pathogenic fungal variants affecting healthy individuals, such as in the genus.

Background: Brain death (BD) is defined as the total and irreversible cessation of brain functions including the brain stem. The team that assists the patient in this situation is made up of higher-level and technical health professionals. Our objective was to analyze the understanding of nursing assistants and technicians of BD.

Article Synopsis
  • Lignins, which are phenolic macromolecules with various applications, were isolated from Crataeva tapia leaves and their properties were examined for potential medicinal and cosmetic uses.
  • The study characterized the lignin through various methods, revealing it to be thermally stable with specific elemental compositions and low antioxidant activity.
  • Experimental results showed that the lignin was non-cytotoxic, stimulated certain immune responses, and enhanced UV absorption in commercial creams, highlighting its potential utility in developing sunscreen and other formulations.

Objectives: The first objective of the present study was to investigate TNF-𝛼 secretion by macrophages stimulated with endodontic pathogens and bacterial cell surface components. The second objective was to assess the in vitro effects of TNF-𝛼 on periostin, cytokine, and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) secretion by and the viability, proliferation rate, and mineralization potential of stem cells of the apical papilla (SCAP).

Methods: TNF-𝛼 secretion by macrophages stimulated with either endodontic pathogens or bacterial surface components was assessed using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

Background: Protease inhibitors have been isolated from plants and present several biological activities, including immunomodulatory action.

Objective: This work aimed to evaluate a Moringa oleifera flower trypsin inhibitor (MoFTI) for acute toxicity in mice, hemolytic activity on mice erythrocytes and immunomodulatory effects on mice splenocytes.

Methods: The acute toxicity was evaluated using Swiss female mice that received a single dose of the vehicle control or MoFTI (300 mg/kg, i.

Article Synopsis
  • Carvacrol is a compound found in the essential oils of various plants and is known for its potential therapeutic benefits, especially for respiratory issues.
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of carvacrol on respiratory disorders, analyzing 17 studies that met specific criteria.
  • The findings suggest that carvacrol effectively reduces certain inflammatory markers in animal models, but more research is needed to clarify its impact on additional inflammatory mediators and to confirm these effects in humans.

In this work, we investigated the antioxidant and immunomodulatory activities of a lignin isolated from Conocarpus erectus leaves. The lignin was characterized by FTIR, H NMR, C NMR and gel permeation chromatography analysis as well as ultraviolet/visible absorption spectra. The lignin was evaluated for total antioxidant activity (TAA), DPPH and ABTS scavenging abilities, and by a lipid peroxidation inhibition assay.

The radiometric monitoring carried out in the present study allowed the discovery of anomalous granite outcrops in natural radionuclides in the rural area of São Mamede in the state of Paraíba, Brazil. The characterisation study made it possible to determine maximum specific concentrations of approximately 199 kBq kg-1 of 238U, 85 kBq kg-1 of 226Ra, 26 kBq kg-1 of 232Th and 24 kBq kg-1 of 40K. Models for environmental dosimetry were applied, which resulted in obtaining the following quantities: radium equivalent (Raeq), indices of external (Hex), internal (Hin) and representative (Iyr) damage, and the effective outdoor dose (HE).

To understand the molecular mechanisms involved in gastric disorders and regeneration, we need an in vitro tridimensional (3D) culture model, which can mimic the in vivo gastric microenvironment. A 3D coculture system named gastrosphere is proposed herein, composed of primary human gastric epithelial and stromal cells. The primary cultures were obtained from endoscopic gastric biopsies, and after mechanical and enzymatic dispersion, epithelial (HGE3) and stromal (HGS12) cells were expanded.

High levels of primordial radionuclides have been reported in soils and rocks of São José de Espinharas, in the state of Paraiba, Brazil. These radionuclides are derived from high concentrations of natural uranium and thorium from a mine in the region. Thus, there is a need for a dosimetric evaluation in the area near the mine and the surrounding cities.

The quality assessment of tropical soils and sediments is still under discussion, with efforts being made on the part of governmental agencies to establish reference values. Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) is a potential analytical technique for quantifying diverse chemical elements in geological material without chemical treatment, primarily when it is performed at an appropriate metrological level. In this work, analytical curves were obtained by means of the analysis of geological reference materials (RMs), which allowed for the researchers to draw a comparison among the sources of analytical uncertainty.
