This study evaluated the stability of novel nutraceuticals containing jabuticaba freeze-dried peel (FJP) and a mix of potential probiotic L. fermentum strains [139, 263 and 296 (LfM)] (JM: FJP + LfM; JFM: FJB + LfM + fructooligosaccharides) through determination of thermal stability, viable cell counts, bacterial physiological status, phenolic compound contents, and antioxidant activity during 90 days of storage (11% relative humidity, 4 and 25 ºC). JM and JFM were thermally stable, with satisfactory stability in temperature variations.

This study describes the epidemiological, clinical, and pathological aspects of an outbreak of ruminal acidosis and ruminitis caused by the ingestion of hedge lucerne (Desmanthus virgatus L.) in 70 cattle in the state of Paraiba, Northeastern Brazil. The herd had been transported from the state of Piauí to Paraiba.

The greatest challenge in children is that the disease is more severe and faster in progression. In this retrospective study, we aimed to compare the accelerated and Dresden protocols for corneal crosslinking in patients aged <18 years who were followed-up for at least 12 months.

Modern agriculture faces the challenge of increasing production without expanding cultivated areas, promoting sustainable practices that ensure food security and environmental preservation. Integrated crop-livestock systems (ICLSs) stand out as an effective strategy, diversifying and intensifying agricultural production in a sustainable manner, ensuring adequate soil cover, and improving nutrient cycling efficiency. Thus, this study aimed to explore and compare integrated crop-livestock systems with Zuri guinea grass ( cv.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTree growth and longevity trade-offs fundamentally shape the terrestrial carbon balance. Yet, we lack a unified understanding of how such trade-offs vary across the world's forests. By mapping life history traits for a wide range of species across the Americas, we reveal considerable variation in life expectancies from 10 centimeters in diameter (ranging from 1.

Our analyses are based on 2023 forest inventory plots (1 ha) that provide abundance data for a total of 5188 tree species. Within-plot species composition reflected both local environmental conditions (especially soil nutrients and hydrology) and geographical regions.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAcute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are severe complications that can occur in infections caused by any species. Due to the high lethality rate and the lack of specific treatment for ALI/ARDS, studies aimed at understanding and searching for treatment strategies for such complications have been fundamental. Here, we investigated the protective role of dietary supplementation with DHA-rich fish oil against lung damage induced by ANKA in a murine model.

This study developed and evaluated chitosan-sodium alginate capsules containing the probiotic Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG using extrusion and emulsification techniques. The encapsulated L. rhamnosus GG cells were also evaluated for technological and probiotic-related physiological functionalities, as well as when incorporated in UHT and powdered milk.

Methods: Aqueous humor and plasma were collected from six patients with active ocular toxoplasmosis and six patients with cataract. Extracellular vesicles were isolated, and western blotting and mass spectrometry were performed for protein analysis.
Ocular syphilis is a re-emerging inflammatory eye disease with a clear gender imbalance, disproportionately affecting men. We investigated the impact of gender on the presentation, management practices and clinical outcomes of this condition. Data generated from a study of patients consecutively diagnosed with ocular syphilis who attended a subspecialist uveitis service at one of four hospitals in Brazil over a 30-month period were disaggregated for analysis by gender.

Methods: A case series was constructed by reviewing medical records.
Results: Four Brazilian patients presenting active posterior uveitis in eyes with previous hyperpigmented old retinochoroidal lesions were identified.
Introduction: This paper explores the role of Brazilian research institutions in the global and national context of study of medicinal plants. Most of these plants have ethnopharmacological use and herbal medicines related to the Amazon. It highlights Brazil's position in scientific production and the importance of Amazonian resources in developing phytomedicines.

Methods: Review of medical records.
Results: Thirteen-year-old boy presented focal necrotizing retinochoroiditis after flood exposure.
Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is a safe antimalarial drug but its overdosage or inappropriate use, such as during the pandemic, may cause adverse effects once this drug is considered a potent inhibitor of autophagy. Information about HCQ's effects on the reproductive field, including gametes and initial embryos, is limited. In this study, we evaluated the effect of HCQ (1, 6, 12, and 24 μM) on pre-implantation embryo development, autophagy, and apoptosis of bovine embryos produced in vitro.

Caffeine is present in a large number of beverages and is an additive used in dietary supplements. Therefore, the concern about its quality and safety for consumers has been increasing and hence requires faster and simpler analytical methods to determine the caffeine amount. The high-throughput analysis is an appropriate solution to pharmaceuticals, bioanalysis, forensic and food laboratory routines.

Introduction: Stroke survivors usually present physical and neuropsychiatric complications. Post-stroke psychosis (PSPsy) is a particularly neglected sequel despite its disruptive nature.
Objectives: To present a case of early emerging neuropsychiatric symptoms following a left posterior cerebral artery (PCA) stroke.
Purpose: To describe the effect of long-term, low-dose pyrimethamine for the prevention of ocular toxoplasmosis (OT) recurrences.
Methods: Sixty-three consecutive patients with inactive ocular toxoplasmosis and positive toxoplasma IgG serology were included. Pyrimethamine (25 mg) + folinic acid (15 mg) were administered every other day (three times weekly) for 12 months.
Trees structure the Earth's most biodiverse ecosystem, tropical forests. The vast number of tree species presents a formidable challenge to understanding these forests, including their response to environmental change, as very little is known about most tropical tree species. A focus on the common species may circumvent this challenge.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFUsing 2.046 botanically-inventoried tree plots across the largest tropical forest on Earth, we mapped tree species-diversity and tree species-richness at 0.1-degree resolution, and investigated drivers for diversity and richness.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Trust in government is associated with health behaviours and is an important consideration in population health interventions. While there is a reported decline in public trust in government across OECD countries, the tools used to measure trust are limited in their use for informing action to (re)build trust, and have limitations related to reliability and validity. To address the limitations of existing measures available to track public trust, the aim of the present work was to develop a new measure of trust in government.
