Experimental and computational evaluation of knee implant wear and creep under in vivo and ISO boundary conditions.

Background: Experimental knee implant wear testing according to ISO 14243 is a standard procedure, but it inherently possesses limitations for preclinical evaluations due to extended testing periods and costly infrastructure. In an effort to overcome these limitations, we hereby develop and experimentally validate a finite-element (FE)-based algorithm, including a novel cross-shear and contact pressure dependent wear and creep model, and apply it towards understanding the sensitivity of wear outcomes to the applied boundary conditions.

Methods: Specifically, we investigated the application of in vivo data for level walking from the publicly available "Stan" data set, which contains single representative tibiofemoral loads and kinematics derived from in vivo measurements of six subjects, and compared wear outcomes against those obtained using the ISO standard boundary conditions.

Little is known about using noninvasive samples for diagnosing Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF). We investigated detection of CCHF virus in serum, saliva, and urine samples. Our results indicate that serum is the best sample type for CCHF diagnosis; saliva can be used for noninvasive sampling.

Uterine Fibroids and Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Capsule: In this study the presence of uterine fibroids was significantly associated with an increased risk of development of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy even when accounting for age and BMI in meta-regression. Despite mounting evidence that dietary factors might have a protective role against risk of cancer, few studies have assessed the relationship between diet diversity with colorectal cancer (CRC) and colorectal adenoma (CRA). Thus, we examined the relationship between dietary diversity score (DDS) and the odds of CRC and CRA. Overall, 129 CRC diagnosed patients, 130 CRA diagnosed cases and 240 healthy hospitalised controls were studied.

The main purpose of neural tissue engineering and regenerative medicine is the development of biological substitutions to preserve, improve, and regenerate the damaged functions of tissues and organs. Three novel conduits, including polyurethane (PU), polyurethane/collagen (PU/C), and polyurethane/collagen/nano-bio glass (PU/C/NBG), were fabricated by the electrospinning technique. After confirming the suitability of conduits in the in-vitro environment, conduits were surgically sutured in a 10-mm gap in the sciatic nerve of a rat to evaluate their role in sciatic nerve reconstruction.
