China lies at the heart of the global center of freshwater crab diversity in tropical Asia, where the 2 most diverse families occur: Potamidae (505 species, 95 genera) and Gecarcinucidae (344 species, 59 genera). China stands out as the country with the highest species richness of freshwater crabs globally. Its fauna comprises 243 species in 37 genera and in 2 families, and species discovery is still progressing at a rapid pace.

Objectives: To investigate the actual situation and characteristics of clients judged to need home-visit nurse services (HN) by certified care managers and to compare the characteristics of users of HN to those of non-users of HN, so that appropriate use of HN can be encouraged.

HIV vaccine development has been hampered by issues such as undefined correlates of protection and extensive diversity of HIV. We addressed these issues using a previously established SIV-macaque model in which SIV mutants with deletions of multiple gp120 N-glycans function as potent live attenuated vaccines to induce near-sterile immunity against the parental pathogenic SIVmac239. In this study, we investigated the protective efficacy of these mutants against a highly pathogenic heterologous SIVsmE543-3 delivered intravenously to rhesus macaques with diverse MHC genotypes.

Rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) are widely used in developing a strategy for vaccination against human immunodeficiency virus by using simian immunodeficiency virus infection as a model system. Because the genome diversity of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is well known to control the immune responsiveness to foreign antigens, MHC loci in Indian- and Chinese-origin macaques used in the experiments have been characterized, and it was revealed that the diversity of MHC in macaques was larger than the human MHC. To further characterize the diversity of Mamu-A and Mamu-B loci, we investigated a total of 73 different sequences of Mamu-A, 83 sequences of Mamu-B, and 15 sequences of Mamu-I cDNAs isolated from Burmese-origin macaques.

This study records the decapods and stomatopod crustaceans fouling a semisubmersible oil platform dry docked for hull cleaning in Jurong Port, Singapore. Unique long 16 (UL-16)-binding proteins (ULBP) or retinoic acid early transcripts-1 (RAET1) are ligands to the activating receptor, NKG2D. The human RAET1/ULBP gene family is identified as ten members (RAET1E to N) with six loci encoding for potentially functional proteins. These are ULBP1 or RAET1I, ULBP2 or RAET1H, ULBP3 or RAET1N, and RAET1L, which are glycosylinositol phospholipid (GPI)-linked glycoproteins and ULBP4 or RAET1E and ULBP5 or RAET1G, which are transmembrane glycoproteins.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is based on the atherosclerosis of coronary artery and may manifest with myocardial infarction or angina pectoris. The Major Histocompatibility Complex (Mhc) class II DRB locus of vertebrates is highly polymorphic and some alleles may be shared between closely related species as a result of balancing selection in association with resistance to parasites. In this study, we developed a new set of PCR primers to amplify, clone, and sequence overlapping portions of the Mhc class II DRB-like gene from the 5'UTR end to intron 3, including exons 1, 2, and 3 and introns 1 and 2 in four species (20 Humboldt, six African, five Magellanic, and three Galapagos penguins) of penguin from the genus Spheniscus (Sphe). Analysis of gene sequence variation by the neighbor-joining method of 21 Sphe sequences and 20 previously published sequences from four other penguin species revealed overlapping clades within the Sphe species, but species-specific clades for the other penguin species.

The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) complex locus has shaped a framework for evolutionary processes because of the dense clustering and strong linkage disequilibrium (LD) of polymorphic genes. Although the landscape of LD among conventional single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) has been described, the data on the lineage of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) haplotype are limited to pairwise comparisons of several haplotypes in Caucasoid populations. Multi-allelic markers, including microsatellite markers, may provide us with a larger power to analyze the MHC haplotype lineage because the mutation rate of microsatellite exceeds that of SNPs by several orders of magnitude.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a heart muscle disease characterized by hypertrophy and diastolic dysfunction of cardiac ventricles. It is suggested that one possible aetiology of HCM is the hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, but molecular mechanisms underlying development of HCV-associated HCM (HCV-HCM) remains unknown. Because the human leucocyte antigen (HLA) molecule is involved in the control of progression/suppression of viral infection, extensive HLA allelic diversity may modulate the post-infectious course of HCV and pathogenesis of HCV-HCM.

We set up a cohort of HIV-infected, asymptomatic Japanese patients with hemophilia for follow-up study in 1995. All subjects who had been infected with HIV-1 for more than 10 years met the criteria for long-term nonprogressors (LTNPs) at the time of entry; however, some of them later developed lymphopenia and required antiretroviral treatment during five more years of observation. The presence of thrombin-cleaved form of osteopontin well correlated with various inflammatory disease activities in not only rodents, but also humans. We previously demonstrated that the blocking of the interaction of a cryptic epitope within osteopontin, which is exposed by thrombin cleavage, with its integrins by specific antibody recognizing cryptic epitope of mouse osteopontin, could significantly inhibits the development of arthritis in mice.
