Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the safety of the Leaf spring exercise for quadriceps training after ACL reconstruction, where traditional leg extensions are avoided due to potential harm.
  • It involved 16 participants with ACL-deficient knees performing the exercise while measuring anterior tibial displacement and quadriceps peak torque using ultrasound imaging and a force measurement device.
  • Results indicated no significant difference in tibial displacement or muscle strength between injured and uninjured knees, suggesting that the Leaf spring exercise is a safe alternative for quadriceps training post-surgery.

Background: A safe and simple procedure to evaluate functional instability due to anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) deficiency (ACLD) has not been established. The angle of trunk backward tilting, which is known as a posture at risk for ACL injuries, could be used as a parameter to evaluate functional instability due to ACLD.

Purpose: To measure the backward tilt angle of the trunk with participants standing upright on 1 leg and to investigate its usefulness to quantitatively evaluate functional instability due to ACLD.
