Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) youth and young adults (YYAs) have poorer mental health outcomes than their cisgender, heterosexual peers in large part due to multilevel stigmatization and minority stress. This was exacerbated by psychological stressors stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic; these experiences intersected with YYA unique developmental stage. Here we explored LGBTQ+ YYA's pandemic-related experiences, focusing on intersections between stigma and belonging, developmental processes, and their relationship to mental health.

Background: As breastfeeding rates in the United States increase, barriers persist for Black, Latine, and low-socioeconomic status household dyads when compared to White and high-socioeconomic status household dyads. Previous breastfeeding disparities research has almost exclusively considered the influence of race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status separately, although these attributes are not randomly distributed across the population.

Research Aim: To identify breastfeeding duration patterns by race/ethnicity and educational attainment in a nationally representative U.

Assessment of atopic dermatitis (AD) severity is essential for therapeutic decision making and monitoring treatment progress. However, there are a myriad of clinical measurement tools available, some of which are impractical for routine clinical use despite being recommended for clinical trials in AD. For measurement tools to be used in clinical practice, they should be valid, reliable, rapidly completed, and scored, and easily incorporated into existing clinic workflows.

Multiple Janus Kinase (JAK) inhibitors were developed as potential treatments for moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD). There is a substantial amount of safety data from recent trials of oral JAK inhibitors in patients with AD. However, the vast majority of safety data for oral JAK inhibitors is derived from patients with rheumatoid arthritis and other immune-mediated disorders, and is primarily derived from tofacitinib, a pan-selective JAK inhibitor.

Significant racial/ethnic disparities in dermatologic care and their subsequent impact on dermatologic conditions were recently reported. Contributing factors include socioeconomic factors, gaps in educational exposure, and underrepresentation of minority groups in the dermatologic workforce. In 2021, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) announced its three-year plan to expand diversity, equity, and inclusion in dermatology.

Mice with inducible urothelial deletion of fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (ShhCreERT2;Fgfr2 ) injured with cyclophosphamide had aberrant basal cell endoreplication and poor regeneration. The endoreplication correlated with an absence of phosphorylated (activated) ERK expression in urothelium. We assessed whether inhibiting ERK activity phenocopied the urothelial defects in injured Fgfr2 mutant mice.

Detection of marrow infiltration is crucial in extramedullary B cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (B-NHL). We studied the efficiency of high acquisition flow cytometry (FCM) in detecting marrow involvement in B-NHL patients and compared its performance with marrow aspiration (BMA) cytology, marrow biopsy (BMB), and positron emission tomography (PET). No case with marrow infiltration was found to be BMB positive and FCM negative.

We previously identified a peptide derived from human fibroblast growth factor 7 (FGF7p) that blocks urothelial apoptosis similar to full-length FGF7, although effects of FGF7p on urothelial repair are unknown. Also, while urothelial AKT activation downstream of FGF7p correlated with the anti-apoptotic effects, we have not directly interrogated the role of AKT in mediating the cytoprotection. Our goal was to assess effects of FGF7p on urothelial repair and the role of AKT signaling in mediating the cytoprotective effects of FGF7p.

Although full-length fibroblast growth factor 7 (FGF7) blocks cyclophosphamide-induced urothelial apoptosis in mice, limitations include high production costs because of its large size. We previously identified a small peptide derived from FGF2 that mitigated acute radiation syndrome as well as full-length FGF2. Based on the sequence of the FGF2 peptide, we synthesized a corresponding 19 amino acid FGF7 peptide (FGF7p).

Introduction: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with significant morbidity and reduced quality of life, especially in patients with moderate-severe AD. Recently, topical and oral Janus kinase (JAK)-inhibitors were investigated as treatments for mild-moderate and moderate-severe AD. However, rare serious adverse-events observed with JAK-inhibitor therapy in AD, rheumatoid arthritis, and other immune-mediated disorders warrant careful consideration.

Keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) drives phosphorylated (activated) AKT (pAKT) in bladder urothelium, which correlates with cytoprotection from cyclophosphamide. The current study determined whether: i) KGF modifies AKT targets [B-cell lymphoma protein 2-associated agonist of cell death (BAD) and mammalian target of rapamycin complex (mTORC)-1] that could block apoptosis; ii) AKT signaling is required for KGF cytoprotection; iii) direct AKT activation drives cytoprotection; iv) co-administration of KGF and an AKT inhibitor blocks urothelial cytoprotection and AKT and AKT-target activation; and v) an AKT agonist prevents cyclophosphamide-induced urothelial apoptosis. Mice were given KGF and cyclophosphamide (or sham injury), and pBAD (readout of BAD inhibition) or p-p70S6k (pS6, readout of mTORC1 signaling) was assessed.

Urothelium is a specialized multilayer epithelium that lines the urinary tract from the proximal urethra to the kidney. In addition to proliferation and differentiation during development, urothelial injury postnatally triggers a robust regenerative capacity to restore the protective barrier between the urine and tissue. Mounting evidence supports the existence of dedicated progenitor cell populations that give rise to urothelium during development and in response to injury.

One early problem during the height of the COVID-19 global pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2), was the shortage of personal protective equipment donned by healthcare workers, particularly N95 respirators. Given the known virucidal, bactericidal, and fungicidal properties of ultraviolet irradiation, in particular ultraviolet C (UVC) radiation, our photomedicine and photobiology unit explored the role of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) using UVC in effectively decontaminating N95 respirators. The review highlights the important role of photobiology and photomedicine in this pandemic.
