Cross-modal interactions between sensory modalities may be necessary for recognition of chewing food by the invisible oral cavity to avoid damaging the tongue and/or oral mucosa. The present study used functional near-infrared spectroscopy to investigate whether the food properties hardness and size influence activities in the posterior parietal cortex and visual cortex during chewing performance in healthy individuals. It was found that an increase in food hardness enhanced both posterior parietal cortex and visual cortex activities, while an increase in food size enhanced activities in the same regions.

Article Synopsis
  • Hypertriglyceridemia is a cardiovascular risk factor, but its impact on outcomes for patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) remains unclear.
  • A study involving 538 AMI patients categorized them into three groups based on serum triglyceride levels, finding that those with low triglycerides (T1 group) had worse outcomes despite fewer cardiovascular risk factors.
  • Patients in the T1 group experienced a significantly higher rate of major adverse cardiovascular events (20.4%) compared to those in higher triglyceride groups, making low TG levels an independent predictor of poor clinical outcomes.

Even though the oral cavity is not visible, food chewing can be performed without damaging the tongue, oral mucosa, or other intraoral parts, with cross-modal perception of chewing possibly critical for appropriate recognition of its performance. This study was conducted to clarify the relationship of chewing food cross-modal perception with cortex activities based on examinations of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and visual cortex during chewing in comparison with sham chewing without food, imaginary chewing, and rest using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Additionally, the effects of a deafferent tongue dorsum on PPC/visual cortex activities during chewing performance were examined.

[n]Cycloparaphenylenes ([n]CPPs, where n is the number of phenylene groups), consisting of 1,4-linked phenylene unit, have attracted much attention due to their cyclic π-conjugated structures and physical properties. However, functionalizing of the benzene rings of smaller [n]CPPs (n < 7) has been a challenge due to ring strain and steric hindrance of the substituents that hampers their synthesis. Here we show successful synthesis of a new [6]CPP derivative with twelve methoxy groups at the 2,5-positions of all benzene rings by utilizing our developed CPP synthesis method via a macrocyclic gold complex.

Orexin A (OX-A) and orexin B are neuropeptides produced in orexin neurons located in the lateral hypothalamus that exert multiple biological functions through the activation of orexin receptor 1 (OX1R) and orexin receptor 2 (OX2R) throughout the central nervous system. OX1R and OX2R have distinct functions: OX1R is involved in reward seeking, whereas OX2R has a pivotal role in sleep/wake regulation. OX2R-selective agonists are in development as novel therapeutic agents for the treatment of hypersomnia.

Planets with radii between that of the Earth and Neptune (hereafter referred to as 'sub-Neptunes') are found in close-in orbits around more than half of all Sun-like stars. However, their composition, formation and evolution remain poorly understood. The study of multiplanetary systems offers an opportunity to investigate the outcomes of planet formation and evolution while controlling for initial conditions and environment.

Neptune-sized planets exhibit a wide range of compositions and densities, depending on factors related to their formation and evolution history, such as the distance from their host stars and atmospheric escape processes. They can vary from relatively low-density planets with thick hydrogen-helium atmospheres to higher-density planets with a substantial amount of water or a rocky interior with a thinner atmosphere, such as HD 95338 b (ref. ), TOI-849 b (ref.

Although the primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is an established treatment for acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), relevant guidelines do not recommend it for recent-STEMI cases with a totally occluded infarcted related artery (IRA). However, PCI is allowed in Japan for recent-STEMI cases, but little is known regarding its outcomes. We aimed to examine the details and outcomes of PCI procedures in recent-STEMI cases with a totally occluded IRA and compared the findings with those in acute-STEMI cases.

Temperate Earth-sized exoplanets around late-M dwarfs offer a rare opportunity to explore under which conditions planets can develop hospitable climate conditions. The small stellar radius amplifies the atmospheric transit signature, making even compact secondary atmospheres dominated by N or CO amenable to characterization with existing instrumentation. Yet, despite large planet search efforts, detection of low-temperature Earth-sized planets around late-M dwarfs has remained rare and the TRAPPIST-1 system, a resonance chain of rocky planets with seemingly identical compositions, has not yet shown any evidence of volatiles in the system.

Orexin-A (OXA) and -B (OXB) are involved in the regulation of multiple physiological functions including the sleep-wake states; therefore, it is critical to monitor their levels under various conditions. Unfortunately, the widely used radioimmunoassay has insufficient specificity for OXA. Although liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) has higher specificity for OXA, previously reported OXA levels in human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) measured using this technique are still inconsistent.
