Background: Recent evidence has indicated that the O-glycosylated PreS2 domain of the middle HBsAg is a distinguishing characteristic that allows the identification of HBsAg of HBV Dane particles and SVPs. This study's objective was to assess the changes in serum O-glycosylated HBsAg levels in CHB patients undergoing ETV or Peg-IFNα treatment.

Methods: Our retrospective study enrolled 86 patients with genotype C CHB.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study involving 277 breast cancer patients examined the effects of WIT, CIT, and FT on the expression of estrogen receptors (ER), progesterone receptors (PgR), and HER2 in surgical specimens compared to preoperative biopsies.
  • * Findings showed that while ER and PgR expressions tended to decrease with longer CIT and FT, only HER2 expression was significantly affected by WIT exceeding 30 minutes, indicating the importance of

Projections of future gastric cancer incidence and the demand for health-care services for gastric cancer patients by geographic area will assist local authorities in determining health-care needs, allocating medical resources, and planning services. This study aims to project the future incidence of gastric cancer, estimate the number of patients per medical institution, and decompose the net changes in cases to assess the impact of population aging by geographic area. Our projections are based on population-based cancer registry data, census data from 2000 to 2020, and the projected population for 2025-2045 in Kanagawa, Japan.

Background: Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) is a major type of hereditary cancer. Establishing effective screening to identify high-risk individuals for HBOC remains a challenge. We developed a prototype of a chatbot system that uses artificial intelligence (AI) for preliminary HBOC screening to determine whether individuals meet the National Comprehensive Cancer Network BRCA1/2 testing criteria.

  • FFPE tissue samples are crucial for analyzing thyroid carcinomas and effective molecular targeting therapies, prompting the development of a new preservation technique that maintains nucleic acid quality better than traditional methods.
  • The study evaluated different specimen types—including thyroid tumors and lymph node metastases—to identify how fixation techniques impact nucleic acid quality, finding that separately fixed samples consistently displayed superior quality.
  • Results indicate that lymph node metastases can provide nucleic acid quality equal to or better than primary thyroid tumors, making them reliable sources for comprehensive genetic profiling in clinical settings.

Background: The gut microbiome plays a crucial role in human health, but maintaining a healthy gut microbiome remains challenging. Current approaches often focus on individual components rather than providing a holistic assessment.

Objectives: To introduce and evaluate a novel approach using data envelopment analysis (DEA) for assessing gut microbiota efficiency and identifying potential targets for personalized interventions.

Background: Digital peer support, defined as peer support delivered through technology such as smartphone apps, may be promising to promote activity in the form of step counts. Interactions among users have a positive impact on retention rates, and apps with social elements show significant improvements in daily step count. However, the feasibility of digital peer support in promoting physical activity (PA) is unknown; therefore, its effectiveness on step count and the clinical implications remain unconfirmed.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the importance of measuring hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) for the management of chronic hepatitis B virus infection (CHB) and examines preS1 protein expression in patients.
  • Researchers used seven monoclonal antibodies to analyze preS1 from various hepatitis B genotypes, discovering that the epitopes crucial for recognition are largely located in the aa33-47 region.
  • Findings indicate that preS1 expression remains stable across different HBsAg levels and genotypes, emphasizing its potential as a therapeutic target in treating CHB.

Background: Endometrial cancer is the most common gynecological malignancy; however, there is no useful blood diagnostic biomarker. This study aimed to determine the utility of tissue factor pathway inhibitor 2 (TFPI2), a biomarker of ovarian cancer, as a diagnostic marker for endometrial cancer.

Methods: We examined serum TFPI2 levels in patients with endometrial cancer (n = 328) compared to those in healthy controls (n = 65) and evaluated the performance of serum TFPI2 levels as a diagnostic marker.

Background: Sarcopenia and frailty often worsen in older adults because of declines in activities of daily living and social connections that are associated with chronic diseases and traumatic injuries such as falls and fractures. Exercise intervention for sarcopenia can take >3 months to improve muscle mass, muscle strength, and walking speed. Thus, a specialized intervention system for shorter periods of time is needed.

  • This study investigates how physicians perceive the quality of life (QOL) in pancreatic cancer patients, especially when traditional surveys with patients are difficult to conduct.
  • A survey was conducted with physicians treating recurrent or metastatic pancreatic cancer, using both composite time trade-off (cTTO) and visual analog scale (VAS) methods to assess QOL across different health scenarios.
  • The results showed that physicians rated QOL higher than the general public in all scenarios, indicating that they may view the health status of patients more positively than the general population does.

Recently, researchers have uncovered a correlation between loneliness and both the development and management of diabetes. Nevertheless, previous studies employing an unvalidated loneliness questionnaire impair result accuracy. Furthermore, this aspect has not been researched in the Japanese population.

  • Glioma stem cells (GICs) are crucial for the resistance and recurrence of malignant gliomas, and this study investigates their maintenance and differentiation through an integrated proteogenomic approach.
  • Researchers found that chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan 4 (CSPG4) and its related enzymes are significantly involved in GIC functionality, with a focus on how their interaction and modification affect GIC behavior.
  • The results suggest that the carbohydrate modification on CSPG4 (termed CS-CSPG4) plays an essential role in nurturing GICs and may serve as a novel therapeutic target for treating glioblastoma.

  • Segmentectomy is a less invasive surgical option compared to lobectomy for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but the reasons behind this reduced invasiveness are not well understood.
  • The study analyzed data from 315 patients who had either segmentectomy or lobectomy, measuring changes in psoas muscle mass over postoperative periods using CT scans.
  • Results showed that the lobectomy group experienced significantly greater muscle mass loss compared to the segmentectomy group, with muscle mass remaining stable in the segmentectomy group throughout the observation period.
