Article Synopsis
  • The coronoid process of the mandible is rarely fractured in maxillofacial trauma, but complications can arise from these fractures, prompting a need for better classification and analysis of cases.
  • A study at a level 1 trauma center analyzed patients with coronoid fractures, using a new 'tripartite' classification system to organize their findings based on age, causes, and types of fractures.
  • Results indicated that most fractures occurred in individuals aged 21-40 years, primarily due to road traffic accidents, and the new classification helps streamline communication and treatment strategies for these injuries.

  • The study investigated the effectiveness of 10% dextrose prolotherapy for treating temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) in 30 patients who had symptoms for over six months and didn't respond to other treatments.
  • The treatment involved four injection sessions over three months, with assessments made on pain, joint locking, and mouth opening at each visit.
  • Results showed significant improvement in TMD symptoms, suggesting that dextrose prolotherapy could be a viable alternative to long-term medications or surgery.

Neoplasms, congenital disorders, fungal infections, and traumatic injuries are the predominant causes of orbital defects. Various retentive mechanisms such as application of adhesive, utilization of mechanical undercuts, and implant-supported attachments are generally used in the maxillofacial prosthesis. In the orbital region, the result of magnet-retained attachments is favorable compared with other mechanisms.

Background: Arterial anastomoses are still most commonly performed using orthodox hand sewing technique. Various rationale such as non-pliable, atherosclerotic, thick-walled or irradiated vessels limit the competency of coupler devices for arterial micro-anastomosis. Microvascular coupling devices (MCD) are well known for venous anastomoses but arterial MCD have relatively been less navigated in reported literatures.

The immune system assumes a pivotal role in the organism's capacity to discern and obliterate malignant cells. The immunogenicity of a cancer cell pertains to its proficiency in inciting an immunological response. The prowess of immunogenicity stands as a pivotal determinant in the triumph of formulating immunotherapeutic methodologies.

Moderately advanced (stage III) and advanced (stage IV a & b) OSMF requires surgical intervention for management A number of options are available for reconstruction of post OSMF oral cavity defects. In our study we retrospectively compared buccal fat pad, nasolabial flap and platysma flap for reconstruction of the buccal mucosal defects. Patient records were obtained from the medical records section of the Institute and divided into three groups; group A (buccal fat pad), group B (nasolabial group) and group C (platysma flap).

  • - Integrated photonic platforms have been growing in popularity, each boasting unique advantages and challenges, particularly in merging different optical materials into a single integrated system.
  • - Silicon carbide (SiC) is a highly promising material due to its favorable optical properties, but existing methods for integrating it into photonic platforms are inefficient, expensive, and inaccurate.
  • - This study presents a method to deposit high-index amorphous silicon carbide films at lower temperatures, achieving high-performing waveguides and ring resonators, showing promise for future integration with other low-loss materials.

Article Synopsis
  • Radiolucent lesions in the mandible can be hard to diagnose but are important for patient care, as demonstrated by an elderly female with a painless swelling.
  • Despite negative aspiration and inconclusive biopsy results, further testing revealed she had multiple myeloma.
  • The patient received chemotherapy with lenalidomide, bortezomib, and dexamethasone, resulting in a decrease in swelling and radiographic improvement, highlighting the need for clinicians to recognize oral signs of systemic diseases.

Article Synopsis
  • - The transfer function is crucial for understanding how a spectrometer modifies the spatial intensity of light to reveal the input's spectral intensity profile.
  • - Developing a comprehensive transfer function usually requires a tunable narrowband light source, which can be expensive for spectrometer design.
  • - This study presents a method that leverages a specific photonic crystal to determine the transfer function with only two wavelength measurements, achieving accurate spectrum reconstruction even with noise, comparable to results from a commercial spectrometer.

Introduction: Reduction of zygomaticomaxillary (ZMC) fracture is often difficult to evaluate intraoperatively because of it peculiar anatomy and limited accessibility. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of use of C-arm as a tool for intraoperative monitoring of ZMC fracture reduction.

Materials And Methods: Group I (C-Arm) and Group II (control group) comprised of patients with isolated unilateral displaced Zygomatic complex (ZMC) fractures and having orbital volume change.

Introduction: Advanced stage malignancies of oral cavity commonly result in complex full thickness defects with subsequent functional and aesthetic loss. Through this article we describe our center's experience in reconstruction of such defects with bipaddled pectoralis myocutaneous (PMMC) flap through an immediate, single-staged procedure.

Materials And Methods: The study included a total of 54 patients who underwent composite resection and neck dissection followed by reconstruction of the defect with bipaddled PMMC flap.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers created magnetic nanomaterials (NiCuDyFeO) with copper and dysprosium doping using a sol-gel auto-combustion method to study their ability to degrade methylene blue, conduct electrocatalytic water splitting, and exhibit antibacterial effects.
  • The nanomaterials showed a single-phase spinel cubic structure and a rise in saturation magnetization along with a slight decrease in coercivity as the doping levels increased, while the optical band gap decreased significantly, enhancing photocatalytic activity to 93.67% degradation of methylene blue under sunlight.
  • The electrocatalytic performance was analyzed, revealing effective hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reactions with specified current densities and voltages; additionally, the antibacterial tests

Article Synopsis
  • Depth of invasion (DOI) of ≥4 mm and specific primary sites indicate a higher risk of occult metastasis, leading to elective neck dissection recommendations; however, nodal metastasis drastically decreases survival rates by 50%, and ENE further worsens prognosis.
  • A study of 320 patients was conducted using statistical methods to analyze the relationship between primary tumor characteristics (like site, size, grading, and DOI) and outcomes such as ENE and level IIb metastasis.
  • Findings suggest that a DOI cutoff of 12.5 mm is critical for predicting ENE, with tumors of the oral tongue identified as an independent risk factor for level IIb metastasis, while size and grading of the tumor also significantly influenced outcomes

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to analyze the clinical and diagnostic aspects of intra-parotid facial nerve schwannoma (IFNS), including a case report, by reviewing 69 articles from various research databases.
  • Findings indicate the average diagnosis age is 43 years, with most cases initially misdiagnosed as pleomorphic adenomas, and the typical management involves superficial parotidectomy.
  • Challenges in treatment include the complex relationship between the tumor and the facial nerve, leading to difficulties in achieving a tumor-free margin without nerve sacrifice, highlighting the lack of standardized management protocols for IFNS.

To evaluate difference in local recurrence, regional (neck) recurrence as well as distant metastases between cases operated with en-block excision of primary cancer and neck nodes versus their separate removal, in squamous cell carcinomas of anterior 2/3 of tongue and floor of the mouth. A total 85 patients of cT1-T4a N0-N2b of carcinoma anterior 2/3 of tongue and floor of mouth were evaluated. Amongst these patients 39 cases of in-continuity en-block neck dissection and 46 cases of discontinuous neck dissection were evaluated for post-operative complications as well as oncological outcome for a follow up period of 3 years.
