Vitamin D is rightly recognized as an essential key factor in the regulation of calcium and phosphate homeostasis, affecting primary adequate bone mineralization. In the last decades, a more complex and wider role of vitamin D has been postulated and demonstrated. Cardiovascular diseases have been found to be strongly related to vitamin D levels, especially to its deficiency.

Article Synopsis
  • Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the top cause of death globally and is primarily caused by a buildup of atherosclerosis in coronary arteries.
  • The immune system plays a complex role in CAD by initiating an inflammatory response to arterial damage, which can lead to chronic inflammation and plaque formation involving immune cells like neutrophils and lymphocytes.
  • Ongoing research is focused on understanding this immune interplay and developing therapies aimed at reducing inflammation to combat atherosclerosis and its effects on heart health.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, despite several advances has been achieved in last decades. Few prognostic and predictive biomarkers guide therapeutic choice in metastatic CRC (mCRC), among which DNA mismatch repair deficiency and/or microsatellite instability (dMMR/MSI) holds a crucial role. Tumors characterized by dMMR/MSI benefit from immune checkpoint inhibitors.

Breast cancer is the most frequent cancer in women: in 2018, almost two million cases have been diagnosed all over the world and it represents the principal cause of death from a neoplastic disease in women. In the past years, breast cancer prognosis has significantly improved over time: currently 5-year survival rates are in the range of 90%, and 10-year survival is about 80%. This improvement has been mostly observed in western countries, due to high coverage and compliance with screening programs, leading to early diagnosis, i.

Introduction: Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) can act as an oncoprotein to regulate the growth and proliferation of many common malignancies, including pancreatic cancer. Previous studies have shown that PTHrP is produced by human pancreatic cancer cell lines, can be shown in the cytoplasm and nucleus of paraffin-embedded pancreatic adenocarcinoma tumor specimens, and is secreted into the media of cultured pancreatic adenocarcinoma cells. We hypothesized that PTHrP could serve as a tumor-marker for growth of pancreatic cancer in vivo.
