We present an unusual case of a macular lesion, possibly a spontaneously closed macular hole, at a 4-year follow-up visit, after lens-sparing vitrectomy (LSV) in stage 4A retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Optical coherence tomography scans of the macula were suggestive of a spontaneously closed macular hole and fibrovascular proliferation at the equator. We hypothesise that tangential traction by residual posterior hyaloid could lead to late macular hole formation after LSV in ROP.

Introduction HbA1c values used for diagnosing and treating diabetes can be affected by factors such as red blood cell lifespan, hemolysis, red cell transfusion, and the presence of minor Hb species like HbA2 and HBF in hemoglobinopathies like sickle cell disease, homozygous HbC disease, HbSC disease, and β-thalassemia. This study aims to compare HbA1c levels in transfusion-dependent thalassemia (TDT) patients and healthy individuals. Materials and methods This is a cross-sectional comparative study.

Metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most common cause of chronic liver disease in Western countries, with rapidly increasing prevalence worldwide, estimated at around 40% due to modernization and urbanization. MASLD is defined as hepatic steatosis and identified through histology, imaging, blood markers, and in the absence of other secondary causes of hepatic fat accumulation, such as significant alcohol consumption, use of steatogenic medication, or hereditary disorders. The current management strategies addressing MASLD involve lifestyle modifications and treating coexisting conditions such as obesity, hyperlipidemia, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes.

Introduction Chronic periodontitis is a prevalent inflammatory disease that leads to the destruction of tooth-supporting structures. Psychological stress is a potential risk factor for periodontitis, potentially exacerbating inflammation and impairing treatment outcomes. This study aims to explore the correlation between chronic stress and oral inflammatory burden, as measured by the Periodontal Inflamed Surface Area (PISA), in a sample population from Bhopal, India.

Objective: Vitamin D deficiency is commonly associated with type 2 diabetes and it has been linked to impaired glycemic control in these patients. This study was done to determine if vitamin D supplementation improves glycemic parameters in type 2 diabetes.

Methods: This randomized controlled trial was done in 140 newly diagnosed adult patients with type 2 diabetes.

Article Synopsis
  • Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare and severe immune disorder that is hard to diagnose due to its varied causes and symptoms, often requiring intense medical care.
  • HLH can either be genetic (HLH syndrome) or acquired (HLH disease), triggered by instances like infections, autoimmune diseases, or cancers; this case study presents the first known instance of HLH caused by tularemia in an older female patient.
  • The patient was initially treated for suspected malignancy but switched to antimicrobial therapy after testing positive for tularemia, leading to a lengthy recovery period but ultimately highlighting the need for quick identification of triggering infections for more effective HLH treatment.

Periodontal diseases are prevalent worldwide and pose a significant public health burden. With the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), there has been growing interest in leveraging AI technologies to improve diagnosis, treatment planning, and management of periodontal conditions. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the applications of AI in periodontics, including its potential benefits, challenges, and future directions.

Objective: To retrospectively assess the Thoracolumbar Injury Classification and Severity Score (TLICS) in patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCF) and compare the treatment given with that predicted by the TLICS score.

Methods: All medical records of patients presenting from January 2014 to November 2017 for acute atraumatic or low impact OVCF were screened, and eligible patients were retrospectively reviewed. The TLICS score was determined based upon magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings and clinical records.

Objectives: Currently, there are three monotherapy drugs approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in intrathecal drug delivery systems (IDDS): morphine, ziconotide, and baclofen. In practice, use includes alternate drugs, drug combinations, and drug concentrations. There is a paucity of real-world data examining prescription patterns for IDDS.

Relapsed pediatric B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) remains one of the leading causes of cancer mortality in children. We performed Hi-C, ATAC-seq, and RNA-seq on 12 matched diagnosis/relapse pediatric leukemia specimens to uncover dynamic structural variants (SVs) and 3D chromatin rewiring that may contribute to relapse. While translocations are assumed to occur early in leukemogenesis and be maintained throughout progression, we discovered novel, dynamic translocations and confirmed several fusion transcripts, suggesting functional and therapeutic relevance.

Article Synopsis
  • Research highlights a critical gap in understanding long COVID (PASC) in children and emphasizes the need for studies that define its characteristics in this age group.
  • The objective is to identify common prolonged symptoms in children aged 6 to 17 post-SARS-CoV-2 infection, examining differences between school-age kids and adolescents, as well as potential symptom clusters for future research.
  • A multicenter study involved nearly 5,000 participants, revealing that certain symptoms were significantly more prevalent in those with a history of COVID-19 compared to those without.

Schwannomas are benign tumours of the peripheral nerve sheath that can develop anywhere in the body. In the nasal cavity, they hardly ever happen. Lesions known as paranasal schwannomas make up fewer than 4% of all head and neck schwannomas.

Article Synopsis
  • Reactivation of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been linked to various diseases, particularly neurological conditions like Alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis, according to a recent study.
  • The study demonstrated that exposure to EBV and its glycoprotein M (gM) led to cognitive decline and increased anxiety in mice, alongside significant changes in brain structure and inflammation markers.
  • Elevated levels of key proteins related to neuroinflammation and Alzheimer's risk were found, indicating a strong association between EBV/gM and neurological issues.

The iron-mediated hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reaction is efficaciously employed for the synthesis of dihydropyrroloindoles and dihydropyrrolizines via 5-- radical cyclization where indoles and pyrroles are used as an acceptor. This radical approach has also been extended for the synthesis of tetrahydrocyclopenta[]indolones via the Baldwin-disfavored 5-- cyclization pathway. The formal synthesis of bruceolline J and the total synthesis of bruceollines E and H have been expeditiously carried out by employing the former strategy.

Mutations in genes encoding epigenetic regulators are commonly observed at relapse in B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL). Loss-of-function mutations in SETD2, an H3K36 methyltransferase, have been observed in B-ALL and other cancers. Previous studies on mutated SETD2 in solid tumors and acute myelogenous leukemia support a role in promoting resistance to DNA damaging agents.

Glioblastoma is the most common malignant brain tumor with less than 15 months median survival. To aid prognosis, there is a need for decision tools that leverage diagnostic modalities such as MRI to inform survival. In this study, we examine higher-order spatial proximity characteristics from habitats and propose two graph-based methods (minimum spanning tree and graph run-length matrix) to characterize spatial heterogeneity over tumor MRI-derived intensity habitats and assess their relationships with overall survival as well as the immune signature status of patients with glioblastoma.
