This study aimed to create a consensus statement on the indications, applications, and limitations of robotics in pediatric urology. After a panel and interactive discussion focused on pediatric robotics, a televoting with 10 questions was administered to 100 pediatric surgeons/urologists attending the joint meeting of the French Group of Pediatric Laparoscopy (GECI)/Italian Society of Videosurgery in Infancy (SIVI) in 2021. The results of televoting were analyzed electronically using Mentometer software.

Objective: To estimate the prevalence and factors associated with the effect of alcohol on crack cocaine use and to analyze experiences related to combined use. Materials and methods: sequential mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative) research, carried out between August 2014 and August 2015 with people who use crack. In the quantitative approach, a cross-sectional study was conducted with 1,062 participants.

Placental growth factor (PlGF) is a member of the vascular endothelial growth factor family and is involved in bone marrow-derived cell activation, endothelial stimulation and pathological angiogenesis. High levels of PlGF have been observed in several pathological conditions especially in cancer, cardiovascular, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Little is known about the genetics of circulating PlGF levels.

Background: The selection of best surgical approach for treatment of vesico-ureteral reflux (VUR) in the pediatric population remains debated. This study aimed to report the results of a multicenter survey about the current trends in surgical management of pediatric VUR.

Methods: An online questionnaire-based survey was performed, with participation of six international institutions.

Retrocaval ureter (RCU) or circumcaval ureter is a rare cause of congenital hydronephrosis. The surgical correction of RCU should be performed in all patients with obstruction and hydronephrosis symptoms, lumbar pain, urinary tract infections, hematuria, or urolithiasis. Traditionally, an open surgical approach was used for the treatment of RCU.

The complexity in the molecular diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis (CF) also depends on the variable prevalence/incidence of the disease associated with the wide CFTR allelic heterogeneity among different populations. In fact, CF incidence in Asian and African countries is underestimated and the few patients reported so far have rare or unique CFTR pathogenic variants. To obtain insights into CF variants profile and frequency, we used the large population sequencing data in the Genome Aggregation Database (gnomAD).

Background: The aim of this study is to identify the information and communication technologies used by health professionals to assist in training and updating of technical and scientific knowledge about crack, exchange of experiences, and development of programs to prevent consumption and treatment of addicts.

Methods: The qualitative methodology was used, constructed an intentional sample by criteria and applied research techniques through semi-structured interviews, triangulation of the analysis, and key informants. The study resulted in the presentation of differences between the way key informants and health professionals sought information.

Glanular venous malformations are uncommon in pediatric patients. The diagnosis can be easily achieved by observation, even if color Doppler ultrasound is useful for a better characterization. Abdomino-pelvic MRI is necessary to assess the extension of complex lesions and check for associated anomalies.

This paper aims to describe the dream content of crack cocaine users as per their view and analyze its interference in the drug withdrawal process. This is a qualitative research with 21 crack cocaine users. Consuming crack cocaine during the dream meant a proof of failure or compensatory pleasure or warning of potential relapse; not consuming the crack cocaine meant the emergence of withdrawal symptoms or the success at overcoming drug dependence.

The present study describes the genetic architecture of the isolated populations of Cilento, through the analysis of exome sequence data of 245 representative individuals of these populations. By annotating the exome variants and cataloguing them according to their frequency and functional effects, we identified 347,684 variants, 67.4% of which are rare and low frequency variants, and 1% of them (corresponding to 319 variants per person) are classified as high functional impact variants; also, 39,946 (11.

Exhaustion of vascular accesses is a major complication in patients undergoing hemodialysis, especially in pediatric setting. We report the case of a boy treated for loss of hemodialysis access after a combined liver-kidney transplantation and transient renal dysfunction. An interventional dilatation of calcific superior vena cava allowed to insert a stable central venous line for dialysis until full graft recovery.

Article Synopsis
  • Brazilian crack cocaine users are seeking alternatives for treatment, such as ayahuasca, due to the low efficacy of traditional addiction therapies.
  • A qualitative study involving 40 users reveals that ayahuasca helps individuals access deeper consciousness, aiding in trauma resolution and reduced drug consumption.
  • Participants noted enhanced spirituality and community support from religious ceremonies, which positively influenced their self-esteem and emotional well-being, suggesting ayahuasca may have therapeutic potential for addiction recovery.

Background: This article aimed to evaluate the outcome of laparoscopic vascular hitch (VH) as an effective alternative to dismembered pyeloplasty in the treatment of children with extrinsic ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) by crossing vessels (CVs), by reporting the experience of three Italian centers of Pediatric Surgery.

Methods: From 2006 to 2014, 54 children (18 girls and 36 boys, average age 10.7 years) affected by suspected extrinsic UPJO by CV were treated in three different institutions: 51 patients underwent laparoscopic VH, while 3 patients, in which a coexisting intrinsic etiology of UPJO was doubtful, underwent laparoscopic dismembered pyeloplasty.

Background: Understanding the genetic architecture of cardiac structure and function may help to prevent and treat heart disease. This investigation sought to identify common genetic variations associated with inter-individual variability in cardiac structure and function.

Methods: A GWAS meta-analysis of echocardiographic traits was performed, including 46,533 individuals from 30 studies (EchoGen consortium).

Background: Myocardial mass is a key determinant of cardiac muscle function and hypertrophy. Myocardial depolarization leading to cardiac muscle contraction is reflected by the amplitude and duration of the QRS complex on the electrocardiogram (ECG). Abnormal QRS amplitude or duration reflect changes in myocardial mass and conduction, and are associated with increased risk of heart failure and death.

Purpose: In pediatric renal transplant recipients there are some indications for native nephrectomy, which can be performed before, during or after transplantation. Indications include massive proteinuria resistant to therapy, intractable hypertension, polyuria and chronic or recurrent kidney infections. Several scientific studies of adults have demonstrated a minimally invasive alternative to native nephrectomy, which consists of ligation of the native ureter without removing the kidney.

Background: In Brazil, crack cocaine use remains a healthcare challenge due to the rapid onset of its pleasurable effects, its ability to induce craving and addiction, and the fact that it is easily accessible. Delayed action on the part of the Brazilian Government in addressing the drug problem has led users to develop their own strategies for surviving the effects of crack cocaine use, particularly the drug craving and psychosis. In this context, users have sought the benefits of combining crack cocaine with marijuana.
