Diabetes and osteoporosis are rapidly growing diseases. The link between the high fracture incidence in diabetes as compared with the non-diabetic state has recently been recognized. While this review cannot cover every aspect of diabetic osteodystrophy, it attempts to incorporate current information from the First International Symposium on Diabetes and Bone presentations in Rome in 2014.

Pancreatectomy with Mesenteric and Portal Vein Resection for Borderline Resectable Pancreatic Cancer: Multicenter Study of 406 Patients.

Purpose: The role of pancreatectomy with en bloc venous resection and the prognostic impact of pathological venous invasion are still debated. The authors analyzed perioperative, survival results, and prognostic factors of pancreatectomy with en bloc portal (PV) or superior mesenteric vein (SMV) resection for borderline resectable pancreatic carcinoma, focusing on predictive factors of histological venous invasion and its prognostic role.

Methods: A multicenter database of 406 patients submitted to pancreatectomy with en bloc SMV and/or PV resection for pancreatic adenocarcinoma was analyzed retrospectively.

Objective: Fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) gene polymorphisms have been reported to be associated with differences in BMI, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. However, previous studies have been predominantly conducted in younger individuals across a spectrum of body weights, whereas little information is available on the older population. We examined the association of FTO gene polymorphisms with cardiometabolic risks among adults who were both obese (BMI≥30 kg/m) and older (age≥65 years).

Sudden hearing loss and the risk of subsequent cerebral ischemic stroke.

Objective: Very few studies have investigated the risk of ischemic stroke after an episode of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL), and findings have been controversial. Insulin autoantibodies (IAAs) are the earliest marker of beta cell autoimmunity; however, only slightly more than 50% of children and even fewer adults newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes are IAA positive. The aim of this investigation was to determine if oxidative post-translational modification (oxPTM) of insulin by reactive oxidants associated with islet inflammation generates neoepitopes that stimulate an immune response in individuals with type 1 diabetes.

Serum chitotriosidase in postmenopausal women with severe osteoporosis.

Unlabelled: Human chitotriosidase (Chit) increases during the osteoclast differentiation and their activity. We demonstrated that serum Chit was significantly higher in osteoporotic subjects than in healthy control ones and revealed a negative correlation between Chit and bone mineral density (BMD). This is the first study showing a correlation between Chit and severe postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Transfusion of stored red blood cells in critically ill trauma patients: a retrospective study.

Objective: The many published studies on the effects of the transfusion of stored red blood cells on clinical outcomes yielded discordant results. Therefore, we chose to study patients with severe trauma. The clinical outcomes considered included in-hospital mortality, the occurrence of sepsis, length of stay in intensive care unit and in hospital, and days of mechanical ventilation.

Genetic polymorphism at Val80 (rs700518) of the CYP19A1 gene is associated with body composition changes in women on aromatase inhibitors for ER (+) breast cancer.

Objective: Polymorphisms in the CYP19A1 (aromatase) gene influence disease-free survival and bone loss in patients taking aromatase inhibitors (AIs) for estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancers. Because AI use results in severe estrogen deficiency that may lead to changes in body composition, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of the rs700518 polymorphism in the CYP19A1 gene on the changes in body composition among postmenopausal women who were treated with AIs for ER+ breast cancer.

Patients And Methods: This was a 1-year prospective study of changes in body composition in postmenopausal women who were initiated on third-generation AIs for ER+ breast cancer.

The learning curve in robotic distal pancreatectomy.

No data are available on the learning curve in robotic distal pancreatectomy (RADP). The learning curve in RADP was assessed in 55 consecutive patients using the cumulative sum method, based on operative time. Data were extracted from a prospectively maintained database and analyzed retrospectively considering all events occurring within 90 days of surgery.

Oral anti-diabetic drugs and fracture risk, cut to the bone: safe or dangerous? A narrative review.

Fracture risk is higher in older adults with type 2 diabetes and may be influenced by treatments for diabetes. Oral anti-diabetic drugs have different effects on bone metabolism. The purpose of this review is to describe the effects of these drugs on bone metabolism and fracture risk.

Severe cholestatic hepatitis due to temozolomide: an adverse drug effect to keep in mind. Case report and review of literature.

Temozolomide is the current standard of therapy for postoperative patients with glioblastoma starting adjuvant radiotherapy. Hematologic adverse events are the most frequent side effects of temozolomide, while liver toxicity has been reported only in the post-marketing period. Here we report a case of severe temozolomide-induced liver injury during concurrent radiotherapy treatment, at a dose level of 75 mg/m2.

Relationship between Troponin Elevation, Cardiovascular History and Adverse Events in Patients with acute exacerbation of COPD.

Evidence suggests that troponin (Tn) elevation during acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) may predict an increase in mortality risk. We performed an observational study of 935 patients admitted to hospital for AECOPD from January 2010 to December 2012. ABCB1 and ABCB19 auxin transporters have synergistic effects on early and late Arabidopsis anther development.

Arabidopsis abcb1 abcb19 double mutants defective in the auxin transporters ABCB1/PGP1 and ABCB19/PGP19 are altered in stamen elongation, anther dehiscence and pollen maturation. To assess the contribution of these transporters to stamen development we performed phenotypic, histological analyses, and in situ hybridizations on abcb1 and abcb19 single mutant flowers. We found that pollen maturation and anther dehiscence are precocious in the abcb1 but not in the abcb19 mutant.

Irisin is associated with osteoporotic fractures independently of bone mineral density, body composition or daily physical activity.

Background: Although there is an evidence of correlation between irisin and osteoporotic fractures, previous studies have not elucidated the relationship between irisin and either lean or fat mass. The main aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between irisin and body composition in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis and the impact of irisin levels on fragility vertebral fractures.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 36 overweight subjects affected by at least one vertebral osteoporotic fracture confirmed by an X-ray vertebral morphometry and 36 overweight nonosteoporotic subjects were enrolled.

Vγ9Vδ2 T lymphocytes activation in osteoporotic patients treated with bisphosphonates.

Treatment with bisphosphonates induces differentiation and activation of Vγ9Vδ2 T lymphocytes obtained from peripheral blood showing also an antitumoral effect in both in vitro and in vivo models. Correlation between osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.

Several evidences have shown in the last years a possible correlation between cardiovascular diseases and osteoporosis. Patients affected with osteoporosis, for example, have a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases than subjects with normal bone mass. However, the heterogeneous approaches and the different populations that have been studied so far have limited the strength of the findings.

Severe hypophosphatemic osteomalacia secondary to fanconi syndrome due to adefovir: a case report.

Objective: Generalized proximal, type 2, renal tubular acidosis, also known as Fanconi syndrome, is a generalized dysfunction of the proximal renal tubule characterized by impaired reabsorption and increased urinary loss of phosphate and other solutes, such as uric acid, glucose, amino acids, and bicarbonate. Chronic hypophosphatemia is the second most common cause of osteomalacia after vitamin D deficiency in adult patients and can have a heterogeneous presentation, ranging from mild symptoms such as muscle weakness and skeletal pain to more severe presentation, such as disabling myopathy, severe bone and joint pain, difficulty walking, and even bone fractures.

Methods: This report describes a case of severe hypophosphatemic osteomalacia with multiple fragility fractures induced by adefovir, which was worsened and confounded by a previous treatment with zoledronic acid and required prolonged intravenous potassium phosphate administration.

Circulating sclerostin associated with vertebral bone marrow fat in older men but not women.
