Article Synopsis
  • Istradefylline (IST) is investigated as an adjunctive treatment for Parkinson's disease (PD) to see if it can reduce the need for higher doses of levodopa, which is commonly linked to motor complications.
  • In a study with 114 PD patients experiencing wearing-off symptoms, those receiving IST required significantly less additional levodopa over 37 weeks compared to those who did not receive IST.
  • Patients treated with IST also showed improvements in motor functions measured by rating scales and wearable devices, suggesting that IST may enhance symptom management without increasing levodopa dosage significantly.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the immune response (specifically IgG levels) to the COVID-19 vaccine in kidney disease patients undergoing immunosuppressive treatment after their third dose.
  • Patients with kidney disease on immunosuppressive treatment showed significantly lower IgG levels compared to those not on treatment, highlighting the impact of immunosuppression on vaccine response.
  • Additionally, specific treatments like glucocorticoids or rituximab influenced the effectiveness of the vaccination, with some patients showing little to no immune response following the vaccine.

Objectives: Vascular calcification is common in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) and contributes to cardiovascular disease. Accumulating evidence indicates that CKD patients often acquire subclinical vitamin K deficiency, which is associated with vascular calcification.

Methods: This prospective, randomized, parallel group, multicenter trial (UMINID000011490) will include 200 dialysis patients in an open-label, two-arm design.

We purified and cloned a β-N-acetylhexosaminidase, LeHex20A, with a molecular mass of 79 kDa from the fruiting body of Lentinula edodes (shiitake mushroom). The gene lehex20a gene had 1,659 nucleotides, encoding 553 amino acid residues. Sequence analysis indicated that LeHex20A belongs to glycoside hydrolase (GH) family 20, and homologues of lehex20a are broadly represented in the genomes of basidiomycetes.
