Background: After kidney injury, macrophages transition from initial proinflammatory activation to a proreparative phenotype characterized by expression of arginase-1 (), mannose receptor 1 (), and macrophage scavenger receptor 1 (). The mechanism by which these alternatively activated macrophages promote repair is unknown.
Methods: We characterized the macrophage and renal responses after ischemia-reperfusion injury with contralateral nephrectomy in mice and littermate controls and used coculture of macrophages and tubular cells to determine how macrophage-expressed arginase-1 promotes kidney repair.
Recent discoveries of extreme cellular diversity in the brain warrant rapid development of technologies to access specific cell populations within heterogeneous tissue. Available approaches for engineering-targeted technologies for new neuron subtypes are low yield, involving intensive transgenic strain or virus screening. Here, we present Specific Nuclear-Anchored Independent Labeling (SNAIL), an improved virus-based strategy for cell labeling and nuclear isolation from heterogeneous tissue.

Using multiphoton imaging of 400-μm-thick kidney sections, the distribution of casts and morphometric measurement of tubules was performed along the entire nephron for the first time. Tubular nuclei are shed before cell detachment, and visually occlusive casts () appeared at 12 h after IRI at the S3/thin descending limb (tDL) junction.

We previously demonstrated that chronic pain after spinal cord injury results from central sensitization in the posterior thalamus (PO). The presence of persistent headaches and back pain in veterans with blast-TBI suggests a similar involvement of thalamic sensitization.

The type of vascular access placed for AKI-RRT is an important decision, for which there is a lack of evidence-based guidelines.
Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study over a 16-month period with 154 patients initiated on AKI-RRT via either a non-tunneled dialysis catheter (NTDC) or a tunneled dialysis catheter (TDC) at an academic hospital.
Aim: To re-examine whether hepatic vein thrombosis (HVT) (classical Budd-Chiari syndrome) and hepatic vena cava-Budd Chiari syndrome (HVC-BCS) are the same disorder.
Methods: A systematic review of observational studies conducted in adult subjects with primary BCS, hepatic vein outflow tract obstruction, membranous obstruction of the inferior vena cava (IVC), obliterative hepatocavopathy, or HVT during the period of January 2000 until February 2015 was conducted using the following databases: Cochrane Library, CINAHL, MEDLINE, PubMed and Scopus.
Results: Of 1299 articles identified, 26 were included in this study.
Diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN) is a major cause of neuropathic pain and a frequent target condition in analgesic treatment trials. Differences in the clinical symptoms and signs associated with DPN suggest distinct pathophysiological mechanisms underlying nerve damage and dysfunction that are likely to have therapeutic relevance. The aim of this study was to develop a tool for the bedside assessment of painful neuropathies such as DPN that captures the diversity of phenotypes.

In 2010, all young patients treated for intrathoracic Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) at one of 10 radiotherapy centers in the province of Quebec received 3D conformal photon therapy. These patients may now be at risk for late effects of their treatment, notably secondary malignancies and cardiac toxicity. We hypothesized that more complex radiotherapy, including intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) and possibly IMRT (in the form of helical tomotherapy (HT)), could benefit these patients.

Design: Retrospective cohort study.
Setting: University-affiliated teaching hospital.
Purpose: The ability to identify and focus care to patients at higher risk of moderate to severe postoperative pain should improve analgesia and patient satisfaction, and may affect reimbursement. We undertook this multi-centre cross-sectional study to identify preoperative risk factors for moderate to severe pain after total hip (THR) and knee (TKR) replacement.
Methods: A total of 897 patients were identified from electronic medical records.
Background And Objectives: There is a paucity of large multi-institutional surveys to determine the prevalence of and risk factors for persistent pain after total hip (THR) and knee (TKR) replacements. We surveyed a variety of practices and patients and also correlated persistent pain with health-related quality-of-life outcomes.
Methods: From October 10, 2007, to March 15, 2010, patients who had undergone primary THR or TKR with a minimum follow-up of 1 year were identified.
Opioid therapy for chronic pain has been popularized over the past few decades, and a concern has arisen that the analgesic efficacy of opioids is not always maintained over prolonged courses of treatment despite dose escalation and stable pain. Considering the potentially serious adverse effects of opioids, the idea that pain relief could diminish over time may have a significant impact on the decision to embark on this therapy, especially in vulnerable individuals. Possible loss of analgesic efficacy is especially concerning, considering that dependence may make it hard to withdraw opioid therapy even in the face of poor analgesia.
