The 3 P's model enhancing patient safety during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Aim: The Local Safety Standards for Invasive Procedures must now consider additional features to address patient and staff safety in light of COVID19.

Material And Methods: The 3 P's model encompasses an evidence-based approach to preparation, protection and prevention, for safety of patients and healthcare staff. A literature review was performed (keywords 'dental' or 'dentistry' and 'COVID19' or 'Coronavirus' and 'LocSSIPs' or 'Local Safety Standards for Invasive Procedures').

Teledentistry from a patient perspective during the coronavirus pandemic.

Objective Evaluation of patient experience when utilising teledentistry during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.Methods We designed a ten-item, five-point Likert-scale questionnaire assessing: 1) patient satisfaction; 2) ease of use; 3) the effectiveness including increasing access to clinical services; 4) reliability of the teledentistry system; and 5) usefulness for patients. Fifty-two patients completed the survey and data was analysed.

Reframing Histological Risk Assessment of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma in the Era of UICC 8th Edition TNM Staging.

Objectives: To assess whether application of the risk model originally proposed by Brandwein-Gensler, influences survival and disease progression in patients treated for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCCs) MATERIALS AND METHODS: Tumours from 134 T1 and T2 OSCC resections (7th edition) were scored independently by 3 histopathologists according to worst pattern of invasion (WPOI), lymphocytic host response (LHR) and perineural invasion (PNI) and categorised according to risk score. Local recurrence, locoregional recurrence, disease progression and overall survival were study endpoints. Interobserver variability of pathologist scoring was also assessed.

Chapter 12: Nutrient Deficiencies and Oral Health.

Malnutrition can significantly affect oral health, and poor oral health in turn can result in malnutrition. This co-dependent relationship, therefore, relies on good nutritional health promoting good oral health and vice versa. A diet lacking nutrients can lead to disease progression of the oral cavity through altered tissue homeostasis, reduced resistance to microbial biofilm, and a decrease in tissue healing.

Case report: management of broken dental needles in practice.

Breakage of a dental needle is a rare but significant complication of local anaesthetic injections, which causes great anxiety for the patient and dental surgeon, and necessitates investigations and further treatment. It may have important medico-legal considerations. We describe a case where a dental needle broke during the routine administration of an inferior alveolar nerve block for a dental procedure.

Case series: two cases of an atypical presentation of oral granular cell tumour.

This paper describes two cases of oral granular cell tumours with an atypical clinical presentation; both are in females aged between 45 and 63 years of age. Granular cell tumours are unusual soft tissue neoplasm of neural or Schwann cell origin. Oral GCTs usually present clinically as pink or yellow small sessile lesions.

Infective endocarditis prophylaxis and the current AHA, BSAC, NICE and Australian guidelines.

The latest guidelines from the American Heart Association (AHA) 2007, the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) 2008, the Australian Prevention of Endocarditis Guidelines 2008, the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC) 2006, and the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) 2008 were reviewed for this article. As a result of recent literature reviews by the AHA and NICE committees, both groups made recommendations regarding antibiotic prophylaxis for dental treatment. While both agree that the benefit of prophylaxis for dental treatment is unproven, the NICE committee has recommended no antibiotic cover for any patients previously classified as 'at risk' of infective endocarditis (IE), while the AHA has recommended cover only for patients deemed to be at high risk of developing IE and with the poorest outcome in the event of IE development.
