Many older adults who are certified for long-term care services live or stay in long-term care facilities (LTCFs), where they receive medical and nursing care. These individuals often encounter medication-related problems, such as polypharmacy and complex medication regimens, including frequent administration schedules. Although considerable attention has been paid to polypharmacy in the context of optimizing medication use in older adults, little emphasis has been placed on simplifying these regimens.

Changes in chronic disease medications after admission to a Geriatric Health Services Facility: A multi-center prospective cohort study.

Nutritional management after admission to a nursing home may enable to deprescribe some chronic disease medications. This study aimed to investigate the status of deprescribing of chronic disease medications among nursing home residents, and to assess the appropriateness based on changes of laboratory test values and nutritional status.

Introduction: International standards for enteral feeding involving the use of feeding tubes with junctions have been introduced. If these junctions are not properly cleaned, they can become contaminated, leading to microbial infections. We aimed to compare the ease and effectiveness of cleaning of four methods using the number of bacteria.

A Safe Way to Administer Drugs Through a Nutrition Tube-The Simple Suspension Method.

The simple suspension method (SSM), developed by Kurata in 1997, is a way to suspend tablets and capsules in warm water for decay and suspension prior to their administration. This method is safe and has various advantages such as the avoidance of tube clogging and the loss of the drug. This study aimed to investigate whether a higher percentage of commonly used drugs could pass through nutrition tubes effectively using SSM, relative to that using the conventional crushing method.

In patients with liver cirrhosis, the maintenance of the branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) levels is important during muscle synthesis at night. Therefore, we investigated the effects of a LES with BCAAs on the Fischer ratio in patients with liver cirrhosis.

Feasibility of International Proposed Standardized Enteral Connector for Semi-Solid Formula Feeding.

Background/aims: The current study was undertaken to assess if the semi-solid formulas could be used with a new ENFit connector with similar force to current percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tubes.

Methods: Experiment 1: We measured the applied pressure (force) needed to compress the syringe containing 7 viscous semi-solid formulas with a 20 Fr PEG tube and low-profile tube through the ENFit connector or the current connector. Experiment 2: This experiment was conducted to evaluate the compression force through 2 connectors in 3 infusion velocity, 7 PEG tube types with 2 semi-solid formulas.

Use of Pharmacist Consultations for Nonprescription Laxatives in Japan: An Online Survey.

Community pharmacies in Japan have long been advocated as effective sources of nonprescription medicines and health-related advice. Consumers sometimes self-treat symptoms of minor illnesses without consulting a pharmacist because the benefits of such consultations are not adequately recognized. The aim of this study was to investigate the use and impact of pharmacist consultations before purchase of nonprescription laxatives.

Differences in the methodologies for evaluating atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation outcomes should be evaluated. In the present study, we compared the AF ablation outcomes among periodic clinic electrocardiography (ECG), 24-h Holter ECG, and telemonitoring ECG to evaluate the differences among these methods.
