Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a rare complication that may be initially discovered in the acute inpatient rehabilitation setting, caused by the abnormal formation of bone tissue in non-skeletal areas of the body. It may be caused by trauma or a neurological injury. When treating a patient with a history of neurological disease complicated by an acute event, treatment should be tailored to suit the patient's needs and to avoid further harm.
