Objectives: To determine the appearance of rectal cancer on MRI after oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy (ICT) and make a preliminary assessment of MRI's value in predicting response to total neoadjuvant treatment (TNT).

Methods: In this IRB-approved, HIPAA-compliant, retrospective study between 1 January 2010-20 October 2014, pre- and post-ICT tumour T2 volume, relative T2 signal intensity (rT2SI), node size, signal intensity and border characteristics were assessed in 63 patients (65 tumours) by three readers. The strength of association between the reference standard of histopathological percent tumour response and tumour volume change, rT2SI and lymph node characteristics was assessed with Spearman's correlation coefficient and Wilcoxon's rank sum test.

Approximately 200 BRAF mutant alleles have been identified in human tumours. Activating BRAF mutants cause feedback inhibition of GTP-bound RAS, are RAS-independent and signal either as active monomers (class 1) or constitutively active dimers (class 2). Here we characterize a third class of BRAF mutants-those that have impaired kinase activity or are kinase-dead.

It is known that the primary cause of dehydration in elderly care is caused by a person not regularly drinking enough. Dehydration is a much-publicised national concern, associated with poor outcomes of care and acute hospital admissions. However, in November last year, NHS England stated that the scale of dehydration is not known; in comparison, it confirmed at least three million people are at risk of malnutrition.

MRI plays an increasingly pivotal role in the clinical staging of rectal cancer in the baseline and post-treatment settings. An accurate evaluation of response to neoadjuvant treatment is crucial because of its major influence on patient management and quality of life. However, evaluation of treatment response is challenging for both imaging and clinical assessments owing to treatment-related inflammation and fibrosis.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of zoomed echo-planar imaging (EPI) diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) with 2-channel parallel transmission (pTx) for MR tractography of the periprostatic neurovascular bundle (NVB) without an endorectal coil, and to compare its performance to that of conventionally acquired DTI.

Methods: 8 healthy males (28.9 ± 4.

Purpose: Incidental ovarian cysts are frequently detected on imaging. Despite published follow-up consensus statements, there remains variability in radiologist follow-up recommendations and clinician practice patterns. The aim of this study was to evaluate if collaborative ovarian cyst management recommendations and a radiologist decision support tool can improve adherence to follow-up recommendations.

Purpose: To perform image quality comparison between accelerated multiband diffusion acquisition (mb2-DWI) and conventional diffusion acquisition (c-DWI) in patients undergoing clinically indicated liver MRI.

Methods: In this prospective study 22 consecutive patients undergoing clinically indicated liver MRI on a 3-T scanner equipped to perform multiband diffusion-weighed imaging (mb-DWI) were included. DWI was performed with single-shot spin-echo echo-planar technique with fat-suppression in free breathing with matching parameters when possible using c-DWI, mb-DWI, and multiband DWI with a twofold acceleration (mb2-DWI).

Objective: The objective of our study was to assess the role of recently introduced hybrid PET/MRI in the evaluation of lymphoma patients using PET/CT as a reference standard.

Subjects And Methods: In this prospective study 28 consecutive lymphoma patients (18 men, 10 women; mean age, 53.6 years) undergoing clinically indicated PET/ CT were subsequently imaged with PET/MRI using residual FDG activity from the PET/ CT study.

OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the impact of multiparametric prostate MRI, including diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) performed using different b values as well as dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) on the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity for transition zone (TZ) tumor detection and localization. MATERIALS AND METHODS.

Purpose: To determine multi-parametric MRI features that can help differentiate malignant omental caking from benign omental thickening in the setting of portal hypertension.

Methods: We identified 19 patients with an abnormal omentum on MRI and an available reference standard: 11 patients with portal hypertension and benign omental thickening (9 male, 2 female, mean age 58 ± 6 years) and 8 patients with metastatic omental caking (4 male, 4 female, mean age 61 ± 13 years). Criteria for benign omental thickening were no evidence of malignancy for at least 24 months of follow-up (n = 7), negative ascites cytology (n = 2), or absence of malignancy on pathologic analysis of liver explant (n = 2).

Purpose: To assess the effect of the new Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN)/United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) policy on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) detection and liver transplant allocation in patients with cirrhosis undergoing dynamic contrast material-enhanced liver magnetic resonance (MR) imaging.

Materials And Methods: In this HIPAA-compliant institutional review board-approved retrospective study with waiver of informed consent, 247 patients (196 men, 51 women; mean age, 60 years ± 11 [standard deviation]) with liver cirrhosis who underwent evaluation for HCC with MR imaging were identified via database search. Three radiologists independently reviewed images and identified number and size of HCC based on criteria within either the prior or revised policy.

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN) are being diagnosed with increasing frequency, necessitating an algorithm to help stratify patients into low- and high-risk groups, for follow-up versus more invasive evaluation. New evidence concerning their natural history and overall risk of malignancy has emerged since the 2006 International Association of Pancreatology consensus guidelines, prompting an update in 2012, that distinguishes radiologic 'worrisome features' from 'high-risk stigmata'. The aim of this article is to illustrate, with case examples, the variable imaging patterns of IPMN and how their radiologic features, such as cyst size and mural nodules, are interpreted in the context of the new 2012 guidelines.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is most commonly diagnosed as an incidental finding on cross-sectional imaging and represents a significant clinical challenge. Although most patients have a surgically curable lesion at the time of diagnosis, the variability in the biologic behavior of the different histologic subtypes and tumor grade of RCC, together with the increasing array of management options, creates uncertainty for the optimal clinical approach to individual patients. State-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides a comprehensive assessment of renal lesions that includes multiple forms of tissue contrast as well as functional parameters, which in turn provides information that helps to address this dilemma.

Thiopurines were examined for their ability to produce singlet oxygen ((1)O(2)) with UVA light. The target compounds were three thiopurine prodrugs, azathioprine (Aza), 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) and 6-thioguanine (6-TG), and their S-methylated derivatives of 6-methylmercaptopurine (me6-MP) and 6-methylthioguanine (me6-TG). Our results showed that these thiopurines were efficient (1)O(2) sensitizers under UVA irradiation but rapidly lost their photoactivities for (1)O(2) production over time by a self-sensitized photooxidation of sulfur atoms in the presence of oxygen and UVA light.

Reports from organisations such as the Care Quality Commission have identified many hospital patients, particularly older people, are suffering from dehydration. A range of national initiatives have emphasised the importance of hydration and nutrition, and offered guidance to help address shortcomings, yet the problems persist. This article examines the interplay of factors that affect the assessment and identification of dehydration, and its prevention.
