Despite its clinical importance, the mechanism of preeclampsia is unclear; however, many believe placental pathology might be related to maternal systemic disease. If this is true, a factor which mediates information from the placenta to the maternal circulation can be hypothesized. Among a variety of such reported factors, soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt1) will be the focus of this review.

alpha-klotho was identified as a gene associated with premature aging-like phenotypes characterized by short lifespan. In mice, we found the molecular association of alpha-Klotho (alpha-Kl) and Na+,K+-adenosine triphosphatase (Na+,K+-ATPase) and provide evidence for an increase of abundance of Na+,K+-ATPase at the plasma membrane. Low concentrations of extracellular free calcium ([Ca2+]e) rapidly induce regulated parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion in an alpha-Kl- and Na+,K+-ATPase-dependent manner.

The concept of fractal geometry is useful for the analysis of irregular and complex structures often seen in nature. Here we apply this concept to investigate the structural mechanism of the development of pulmonary emphysema in the klotho mouse, which, after milk feeding, exhibits characteristics resembling aging and develops emphysema. We calculated the relationships between perimeter and size characterizing shape and between cumulative frequency and size of the terminal air spaces identified from histologic slides and found that both relations followed a power law with fractal properties.

Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) is a rare disorder characterized by distinctive cutaneous and gastrointestinal venous malformations that usually cause massive or occult gastrointestinal hemorrhage and iron deficiency anemia secondary to the bleeding episodes. Only two reports of BRBNS in pregnant women can be found, according to the MEDLINE search. Both cases did not describe severe complications during pregnancy.

There have been no previous reports of human placentas mimicking the cotyledonary placenta of ruminants. We report a case of cotyledonary-like placenta associated with severe intrauterine growth restriction. A woman pregnant for the first time was referred to our hospital at 27 weeks' gestation because of severe intrauterine growth restriction.

Recent evidence suggests that oxidative stress is involved in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia. Using immunohistochemistry and Western blotting, we investigated the oxidative stress- and redox-related molecules, such as 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), thioredoxin (TRX) and redox factor-1 (ref-1) in the placenta in preeclampsia, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), preeclampsia + IUGR and in normal pregnancy. Using immunohistochemistry, the level of 8-OHdG was significantly higher in IUGR ( P=0.
