Selenium is an essential trace element and its deficiency causes myositis, myocardial damage, and other symptoms. Patients receiving long-term intravenous nutrition or tube-feeding in particular are deficient in essential trace elements, including selenium, and require regular supplementation. In Japan, injectable selenium-containing products are listed on the National Health Insurance drug price list, and oral solutions are prepared and used in hospitals.

Nerve inflammation is linked to the development of various neurological disorders. This study aimed to examine whether Glycyrrhizae Radix effectively influences the duration of the pentobarbital-induced loss of righting reflex, which may increase in a mouse model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nerve inflammation and diazepam-induced γ-aminobutyric acid receptor hypersensitivity. Furthermore, we examined the anti-inflammatory effects of Glycyrrhizae Radix extract on LPS-stimulated BV2 microglial cells, in vitro.

Determining values of plasma renin activity (PRA) or plasma active renin concentration (ARC), plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC), and aldosterone-to-renin ratio (ARR) is essential to diagnose primary aldosteronism (PA), but it takes several days with conventional radioimmunoassays (RIAs). Chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassays for PAC and ARC using the Accuraseed® immunoanalyzer facilitated the determination, but relations between Accuraseed® immunoanalyzer-based and RIA-based values in samples of PA confirmatory tests and adrenal venous sampling remained to be elucidated. We addressed this issue in the present study.

In Japan, primary aldosteronism (PA) is diagnosed if any one of the captopril challenge test (CCT), saline infusion test (SIT), furosemide-upright test (FUP), and oral salt-loading test (OST) is positive. The present study aimed to investigate if parameters of CCT, the safest confirmatory test, could predict decisions of other tests and propose the next test to diagnose PA in CCT-negative patients. In a cross-sectional design, 142 patients, who were referred to our hospital for the scrutiny of PA and underwent at least two confirmatory tests, were enrolled.

We recently reported that stimulation with high-dose ACTH caused different responses in terms of aldosterone secretion in aldosterone-producing adenomas (APAs) and idiopathic hyperaldosteronism (IHA) in patients with primary aldosteronism (PA). However, the role of endogenous ACTH in aldosterone secretion in PA has not been systematically evaluated. In this study, we examined diurnal changes in plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC), and changes in PAC after dexamethasone administration in patients with suspected PA, in order to evaluate the effect of endogenous ACTH on aldosterone secretion.

Objective: After unilateral adrenalectomy (uADX) in patients with a unilateral aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA), the remaining contralateral adrenal gland is generally considered sufficient to support life. However, few studies have compared adrenal reserve function before and after uADX. Therefore, we closely evaluated adrenal cortisol secretory function before and after uADX in patients with unilateral APA.

Background Aims: Adoptive immunotherapy is emerging as a potent anti-tumor treatment modality; Vγ9Vδ2 T cells may represent appropriate agents for such cancer immunotherapy. To improve the currently limited success of Vγ9Vδ2 T-cell-based immunotherapy, we examined the in vivo dynamics of these adoptively-transferred cells and hypothesized that interleukin (IL)-15 is the potential factor for Vγ9δ2 T cell in vivo survival.

Methods: We conducted a clinical trial of adoptive Vγ9Vδ2 T-cell transfer therapy in six colorectal cancer patients who received pulmonary metastasectomy.

Although there have been reports of the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells and mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells into steroid-producing cells, the differentiation of human ES/induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells into steroid-producing cells has not been reported. The purpose of our present study was to establish a method for inducing differentiation of human ES/iPS cells into steroid-producing cells. The first approach we tried was embryoid body formation and further culture on adherent plates.

Myelolipomas are adrenal tumors composed of both adipose and hematopoietic tissues which are rarely associated with primary aldosteronism (PA). Here, we report a case of myelolipoma associated with PA. Aldosterone hypersecretion from bilateral adrenal glands had been confirmed by adrenal venous sampling and pathological analyses, but PA was clinically cured after surgical removal of the unilateral adrenal gland together with the myelolipoma that was not producing aldosterone.

Type 1 iodothyronine deiodinase (D1), a selenoenzyme that catalyzes the bioactivation of thyroid hormone, is expressed mainly in the liver. Its expression and activity are modulated by several factors, but the precise mechanism of its transcriptional regulation remains unclear. In the present study, we have analyzed the promoter of human D1 gene (hDIO1) to identify factors that prevalently increase D1 activity in the human liver.

Context: Adrenal venous sampling is the "gold standard" test in the diagnosis of an aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA) among patients with primary aldosteronism (PA) but is available only in specialized medical centers. Meanwhile, an APA is reported to be generally more sensitive to ACTH than idiopathic hyperaldosteronism.

Objective: The aim was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the ACTH stimulation test in the diagnosis of an APA among those with suspicion of PA.
