Exploration of coping styles in male patients with head and neck cancer: a prospective cohort study.

Majority of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients are male, and more than 85% of patients with HNC have the habit of smoking and drinking. Due to the specific demographic characteristics, HNC patients are anticipated to have specific coping styles, affecting psychological distress, survival, and quality of life. We explored the subscales of the Mental Adjustment to Cancer (MAC) Scale in male patients with HNC, and then examined the correlation between revised subscales of the MAC scale and anxiety/depression.

Capsule Endoscope Aspiration after Repeated Attempts for Ingesting a Patency Capsule.

Capsule endoscope aspiration into the respiratory tract is a rare complication of capsule endoscopy. Despite the potential seriousness of this complication, no accepted methods exist to accurately predict and therefore prevent it. We describe the case of an 85-year-old male who presented for evaluation of iron deficiency anemia.

Temperament and character profiles of patients with burning mouth syndrome.

Objective: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a chronic disease in which patients feel a burning sensation and pain in the oral cavity. Although personality traits have been suggested to influence the development and course of BMS, they have not yet been examined in detail. We therefore investigated the personality traits of BMS patients.

Preoperative level of depression is a predictor of postoperative levels of depression in patients with head and neck cancer.

Objective: Emotional distress is considered to be higher in patients with head and neck cancer than other types of cancer. The present study aimed to identify predictors of the postoperative levels of depression in patients with head and neck cancer who have undergone surgery.

Methods: Postoperative levels of depression were assessed at 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery.

[Psychosocial aspects of liver transplantation indication criteria for alcohol-related liver failure].

Objectives: Consensus regarding psychosocial aspects relevant for the liver transplantation indication criteria in case of alcohol-related liver failure remains to be established. Thus we investigated the psychosocial aspects of candidates for liver transplantation for alcohol-related liver failure in order to determine the indication criteria.

Subjects: We evaluated the psychosocial aspects of 19 candidates (14 male and 5 female patients) who met the physical liver transplantation indication criteria for alcohol-related liver failure at Nagoya University Hospital between 2004 and 2012.

A gastric duplication cyst with an aberrant pancreatic ductal system: report of a case.

We report an extremely rare case of a gastric duplication cyst together with an aberrant pancreatic ductal system, which communicated with the stomach rather than the pancreatic ductal system with no evidence of pancreatitis. A 46-year-old woman developed severe abdominal pain after a 10-year history of occasional mild abdominal pain. Upper gastrointestinal barium radiography showed a rigidity of the stomach wall, and gastroscopy revealed a fistula orifice at a greater curvature of the gastric body.
