[reaction: see text] Norbornene undergoes Ni-catalyzed (1-2 mol% allylnickel bromide/phosphine/NaBARF or AgSbF(6), 1 bar ethylene, -50 degrees C) hydrovinylation (>97% yield), giving either a 1:1 or a 2:1 (norbornene/ethylene) adduct depending on the size of the phosphine. Use of binaphthol-derived phosphoramidite ligand results in up to 80% ee for the 1:1 adduct. The course of the reaction is highly dependent on the ligand (size and configuration of the appendages) and the counteranion present.

Through a systematic examination of ligand and counterion effects, new protocols for a nearly quantitative and highly selective codimerization of ethylene and various functionalized vinylarenes have been discovered. In a typical reaction, 4-bromostyrene and ethylene undergo codimerization in the presence of 0.0035 equiv each of [(allyl)NiBr]2, triphenylphosphine, and AgOTf in CH2Cl2 at -56 degrees C to give 3-(4-bromophenyl)-1-butene in >98% yield and selectivity.

[reaction: see text] Asymmetric reductive ring opening of oxa- and azabenzonorbornadienes with organic acids and zinc powder under mild conditions catalyzed by Ni(binap)Cl(2) or Pd(binap)I(2) produces the corresponding 1,2-dihydronaphth-1-ols in good to excellent yields with high enantioselectivity.

With the emergence of Transfusion Medicine Department the definition of Blood Bank has changed. Today, it is not just a bank to collect & issue blood, it prepares and supplies individual blood component, to the patients as and when the need arises during the course of treatment. The planning & management of any blood bank depends on number of functions it is required to serve and the number of units of demand of blood & blood products.

The strength of solvent affects the therapeutic efficacy of homeopathic tinctures of vegetable origin. On the basis of physical, chemical and biological assay of different tinctures made with different concentrations, in the case of Holarrhena antidysenterica Wall, the best solvent was 70% v/v ethanol. This is different from the standard strong alcohol recommended in homeopathic pharmacopoeia.

Nickel-catalyzed ring-opening reactions of 7-heteroatom norbornadienes and norbornenes with various organic halides to give products with multiple stereocenters are described. Treatment of 7-oxabenzonorbornadiene (1a) and 7-carbomethoxy-7-azabenzonorbornadiene (1b) with aryl iodides (ArI) in the presence of NiCl(2)(PPh(3))(2) and Zn powder gave the corresponding ring-opening addition products cis-1,2-dihydro-2-aryl-1-naphthol (2a-m) and methyl N-[cis-1,2-dihydro-2-aryl-1-naphthyl]carbamate (3a-e) completely stereoselectively in 40-99% yields. The nickel system also catalyzes the reaction of highly substituted oxabicyclic [2.

This is the first study to examine the effects of peripheral administration of acid on the activity of dorsal horn neurones in vivo. Extracellular recordings from convergent neurones revealed increases in neuronal activity evoked by administration of low pH solutions into the peripheral receptive field. Threshold for activity ranged from pH 5.

Successful use of homeopathic medicines is related to the purity and quality of crude and finished products. To maintain the quality of Tylophora indica mother tincture, a comparative study on physical, chemical and biological assay of five samples (reference laboratory and market) of Tylophora indica was carried out. The market sample showed different chromatographic characteristics and may have been prepared from a different species.

Two patients with hypodipsia and hypernatremia are described. The first patient, whose hypodipsia was of unknown cause, developed hypernatremia unless large volumes of fluid were urged upon him; upon treatment with chlorpropamide normal serum sodium levels were achieved with spontaneous fluid intake. The second patient had hypodipsia and diabetes insipidus resulting from a craniopharyngioma.

A thin-layer acrylamide gel electrophoresis technique suitable for analysis of serum or urine proteins is described in detail. The method gives sharp differentiation of protein fractions and is particularly suitable for the analysis of biological solutions containing proteins in low concentration.

The haptoglobin phenotypes of 3,332 individuals, consisting of 2,930 caucasians and 402 negroes living in the greater Boston area, were determined. Of these, 3,222 were hospitalized medical patients fully documented regarding diagnoses. One hundred and twentyeight of the total population studied were shown to exhibit starch gel anhaptoglobinaemia (3.
