Introduction: Epidemiological data are crucial for adopting primary and secondary prevention strategies and to develop screening protocols against prostate cancer (PCa). Despite the comprehensive characterization of PCa across White and Black men, there is a lack of data from the Mexican population. This manuscript presents data from the Can.

Purpose: Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer type in Mexico, with male breast cancer accounting for only 1% of all breast cancer cases. A limited number of studies have described the clinical-pathological profiles of males with breast cancer in low- and middle-income countries. This study presents an analysis of patients with breast cancer seen at three different institutions in México.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common and deadly neoplasms worldwide, with a growing burden in low- and middle-income countries, such as Mexico. This study seeks to evaluate the knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to CRC in a community in Mexico City. A cross-sectional survey was conducted between March and April 2023 among adults aged 45 to 74 residing in six neighborhoods of the Tlalpan borough in Mexico City.

According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, leukemia ranks 14th in incidence and 11th in mortality and has a 5-year prevalence of approximately 1300,000 cases. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most common hematopoietic syndrome in children during the first 5 years of life and represents approximately 75 % of all neoplasms among the pediatric population. The development of leukemia is strongly governed by DNA alterations that accelerate the growth of bone marrow cells.

Background: Breast cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in females, and the hormone receptor-positive subtype is the most frequent. Breast cancer is a common source of brain metastases; therefore, we aimed to generate a brain metastases prediction model in females with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer.

Methods: The primary cohort included 3,682 females with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer treated at a single center from May 2009 to May 2020.

Background: Few epidemiologic studies have focused on the specific source of ambient air pollution and adverse health effects in early life. Here, we investigated whether air pollutants from different emission sources were associated with decreased birth anthropometry parameters and increased DNA adduct formation in mother-child pairs residing in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA).

Methods: This cross-sectional study included 190 pregnant women recruited during their last trimester of pregnancy from two hospitals at MCMA, and a Modeling Emissions Inventory (MEI) to calculate exposure to ambient air pollutants from different emissions sources (area, point, mobile, and natural) for two geographical buffers 250 and 750 m radii around the participants households.

Testicular cancer (TCa) is a rare malignancy affecting young men worldwide. Sociodemographic factors, especially socioeconomic level (SEL) and healthcare access, seem to impact TCa incidence and outcomes, particularly among Hispanic populations. However, limited research has explored these variables in Hispanic groups.

Background: Breast cancer (BC) is a leading cause of mortality and the most frequent malignancy in women, and most deaths are due to metastatic disease, particularly brain metastases (BM). Currently, no biomarker or prediction model is used to predict BM accurately. The objective was to generate a BM prediction model from variables obtained at BC diagnosis.

Background: COVID-19 is associated with systemic inflammation. This inflammatory response is further deregulated by oncological treatments increasing mortality in this population. However, there is conflicting information regarding the clinical factors that increase mortality in patients with severe COVID-19.

To describe access to complete treatment in women with cervical cancer and state-sponsored insurance versus no insurance. We conducted a retrospective observational study. The source population consisted of women treated for cervical cancer from January 2000 to December 2015 in a tertiary care hospital.

Article Synopsis
  • The surgical treatment for laryngeal cancer is influenced by the tumor's location and stage, with guidelines suggesting elective neck dissection for certain cases, but lacking strong supporting evidence.
  • A study involving 35 patients with advanced glottic cancer showed low rates of lymph node metastasis after bilateral elective neck dissection and specific prelaryngeal dissection, with most nodes testing negative for cancer.
  • Despite a low rate of metastasis (2.8%), the findings indicate that while radical neck dissection may be unnecessary for some patients, it can help prevent future regional cancer recurrences.

Background: In Mexico, cancer mortality rates have undergone changes over the past decades.

Objective: To analyze the evolution of cancer mortality rates in Mexico between 1990 and 2021.

Materials And Methods: Based on the Global Burden of Disease study, the mortality rates for the 10 most prevalent types of cancer in Mexico were obtained, at the national and regional level and by states, considering different age groups and gender.

Article Synopsis
  • Astrocytomas are aggressive brain tumors, and this study explores the role of specific genetic variants (AGT, MGMT, TP53) in their prognosis, particularly in Mexican patients.
  • Researchers sequenced DNA from 48 Mexican patients with astrocytoma to identify variants and compared the results to a larger dataset from The Cancer Genome Atlas.
  • Findings revealed more AGT and MGMT variants in the Mexican cohort, with AGT variants only found in women, and both MGMT variations and promoter methylation linked to improved survival and chemotherapy response, suggesting distinct molecular profiles based on gender and population.

Objective: The aim of this study was to describe trends in lung cancer (LC) mortality and trends in tobacco use.

Methods: This is an ecological time-series study to determine mortality trends due to lung cancer resulting from tobacco consumption, based on secondary open-access sources, such as the National Surveys. Smoking prevalence, tobacco use trends, mortality rates, and percentage were determined by LC.

Marijuana ( sp.) is among the most recurred controlled substances in the world, and there is a growing tendency to legalize its possession and use; however, the genotoxic effects of marijuana remain under debate. A clear definition of marijuana's genotoxic effects remains obscure by the simultaneous consumption of tobacco and other recreational substances.

Purpose: Identification of a high-risk group of brain metastases (BM) in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) could lead to early interventions and probably better prognosis. The objective of the study was to identify this group by generating a multivariable model with recognized and accessible risk factors.

Methods: A retrospective cohort from patients seen at a single center during 2010-2020, was divided into a training (TD) and validation (VD) datasets, associations with BM were measured in the TD with logit, variables significantly associated were used to generate a multivariate model.

Article Synopsis
  • - Breast cancer is a common disease that often leads to brain metastases (BM), which significantly affects survival rates in patients, particularly in Hispanic populations.
  • - A study involving over 2,100 breast cancer patients aimed to explore the relationship between the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the occurrence of BM, revealing that a high NLR is linked to a greater frequency of BM and shorter survival rates.
  • - While a high NLR has potential as a prognostic indicator for breast cancer, the presence of BM was found to be the most critical factor affecting overall survival, indicating the need for further exploration into their interaction.

Background: Screening for prostate cancer has long been a debated, complex topic. The use of risk calculators for prostate cancer is recommended for determining patients' individual risk of cancer and the subsequent need for a prostate biopsy. These tools could lead to better discrimination of patients in need of invasive diagnostic procedures and optimized allocation of health care resources.

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality in women worldwide, and neoadjuvant chemotherapy has emerged as an option for the management of locally advanced breast cancer. Extensive efforts have been made to identify new molecular markers to predict the response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Transcripts that do not encode proteins, termed long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), have been shown to display abnormal expression profiles in different types of cancer, but their role as biomarkers in response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy has not been extensively studied.
