A subject relative clause preference in a split-ergative language: ERP evidence from Georgian.

A fascinating descriptive property of human language processing whose explanation is still debated is that subject-gap relative clauses are easier to process than object-gap relative clauses, across a broad range of languages with different properties. However, recent work suggests that this generalization does not hold in Basque, an ergative language, and has motivated an alternative generalization in which the preference is for gaps in morphologically unmarked positions-subjects in nominative-accusative languages, and objects and intransitive subjects in ergative-absolutive languages. Here we examined whether this generalization extends to another ergative-absolutive language, Georgian.

Animal control measures and their relationship to the reported incidence of dog bites in urban Canadian municipalities.

Various measures, including ticketing, licensing, and breed-specific legislation, are used by municipalities to control dog bites, but their effectiveness is largely unknown. Recently, for the first time in the history of this bacterial species, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) carrying the enterococcal vanA gene complex and expressing high level resistance to vancomycin was identified in clinical specimens (CDC (2002) MMWR 51, 565-567). The purpose of our studies was to understand how vanA is expressed in the heterologous background of S. aureus and how it interacts with the mecA-based resistance mechanism, which is also present in these strains and is targeted on cell wall biosynthesis.

Diabetes preventive care in Oregon's Medicaid population.

The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of diabetes in Oregon's adult Medicaid population and to compare the level of diabetes-related preventive care with the state's general population. Responses to telephone interviews conducted in 1999 among 2,770 randomly selected adult Medicaid beneficiaries and 7,229 Oregon residents were compared.
