Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed the outcomes of patients who underwent open carpal tunnel release (OCTR) with only one follow-up hand therapy visit to see how their symptoms and function improved over 12 weeks.
  • Results indicated significant improvements in patient-reported symptoms as measured by the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (BCTQ), particularly noticeable by the first therapy visit and continuing through 12 weeks.
  • Complications were relatively rare, with only a 13% occurrence of mild issues like pillar and palm pain, suggesting that the procedure and limited therapy visits were generally effective.

The purpose of this retrospective review was to evaluate the effectiveness of a hydraulic distention technique (hydroplasty) combined with a therapy program for treatment of idiopathic frozen shoulder. Over a two-year period, 60 patients with idiopathic frozen shoulder were identified as having undergone the hydroplasty procedure and therapy protocol at the authors' hand center. Distention of the glenohumeral joint was achieved by an injection of a 10-mL combination of bupivacaine (Marcaine), lidocaine (Xylocaine), and corticosteroid followed by injection of 30 mL of chilled sterile normal saline.
