Article Synopsis
  • Low genetic variation in large mammalian populations can result from factors like small effective population size, historical bottlenecks, and social behaviors.
  • Killer whales are abundant and social but show reduced genetic diversity, with no consistent geographical pattern of variation.
  • The limited genetic variation in some killer whale populations likely stems from strict matrilineal structures and may also hint at a historical bottleneck affecting worldwide diversity.
