Objectives: We aimed to determine if achieving a 10-m walk target within the first week of stroke onset correlates with independent outdoor walking at discharge and discharge to home for patients with stroke.

Materials And Methods: This study included 226 patients transferred to the subacute rehabilitation hospital (SRH) between January 2018 and March 2021. Data obtained from hospital records included age, sex, stroke type, lesion side, body mass index, presence of acute treatment, length of days from onset to physical therapy intervention, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, length of hospital stay, Functional Independence Measure score, and the ability to complete the 10 m walk target within the first week of stroke onset.

The aim of the present study was to search for an effective regimen among existing chemotherapies for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Among the tested drugs, we focused on combined SN-38, which is the active metabolite produced from irinotecan hydrochloride - a type I DNA topoisomerase inhibitor - after it is metabolized by carboxylesterase in the liver and gefitinib, an EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor treatment, based on the ability of this combination to inhibit HNSCC cell growth. Contrary to our expectation, in vivo, there was no significant difference in tumor growth suppression between gefitinib-only treatment and gefitinib plus SN-38.

We describe an effective technique for the low-pressure continuous suction of bile and pancreatic juice from the hepatic duct and jejunal limb after major hepatectomy with pancreatoduodenectomy (PD). After hepatectomy and PD, reconstruction is performed by a modification of Child's method. A pancreaticojejunostomy is completed with interrupted sutures between the pancreatic duct and mucosa, without inserting a stent.

Although uterine leiomyomas represent one of the most common neoplasms in adult women, their pathogenesis remains poorly understood. A cDNA microarray analysis was performed to search for candidate genes expressed to a greater degree in leiomyoma compared with matched myometrium. A total of 15 candidate genes was obtained; neuron-specific protein PEP-19 (Purkinje cell protein 4; PCP 4) exhibited a striking difference in expression between leiomyoma and myometrium.

Cold-inducible RNA-binding protein (CIRP), an 18-kD protein in the mouse and human, is induced by lowering the temperature of cultured cells. CIRP is possibly a cell cycle regulator because its overexpression results in prolongation of G1 phase in vitro. Heat shock proteins HSP70 and HSP90 are sex steroid receptor-associated proteins, and HSP90 expression has reportedly been correlated with sex steroid receptor status in endometrial carcinomas. HSP70 is also known to associate with several oncogene products such as p53 protein, and expression of HSP70 has been reported to be a prognostic factor in several malignant neoplasms. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 47 patients with locally advanced or bulky cervical carcinoma treated with two courses of intraarterial infusion of cisplatin, doxorubicin, mitomycin C, and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), followed by radical hysterectomy at our hospital between 1988 and 1995. To elucidate the role of the FHIT (fragile histidine triad) gene in ovarian carcinogenesis, the expression of the gene was analysed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in 51 cases of ovarian carcinoma, 6 cases of borderline tumour and 4 cases of benign ovarian tumour. The concomitant expressions of normal and abnormal FHIT transcripts were detected in 39% of carcinomas and in 83% of borderline tumours, while benign tumours and normal ovarian tissues expressed only normal transcript. In addition, there were 4 (8%) cases of carcinoma lacking expression of normal FHIT transcript, all of which were in advanced stages (stage III-IV) and poorly differentiated.

Gonadotropins have been suggested to play a role in the development or progression of ovarian cancer, and we have previously reported the expression of luteinizing hormone/ human chorionic gonadotropin (LH/hCG) receptor in 40% of epithelial ovarian carcinomas. To examine the biological effect of LH/hCG on ovarian cancer cells, apoptosis induced by cisplatin with or without hCG treatment was investigated in 2 ovarian cancer cell lines, OVCAR-3 and SK-OV-3. We present an early invasive adenocarcinoma of the fallopian tube, which was incidentally found in a 45-year-old woman undergoing a laparotomy for uterine myoma. Histological examination of the hydropic tubes revealed widespread endosalpingeal hyperplasia without atypia in both tubes. In addition, the left tube contained 3 scattered lesions of carcinoma in situ, one of which was accompanied by a microfocus of definite stromal invasion confined within the endosalpingeal mucosa.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been suggested to be involved in angiogenesis and microvascular hyperpermeability. We examined immunohistochemically the expression of VEGF in the granulosa and theca cells, along with that of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), in the vascular endothelium during the course of follicular development and corpora lutea formation in human ovaries. The immunolocalization of VEGF in these cells was compared with that of another putative angiogenic factor, basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF).

The carcinogenic process of epithelial ovarian carcinomas is still unknown, and both pathways of de novo carcinogenesis from the surface epithelium and malignant transformation of benign cystadenoma have been suggested. Especially in mucinous ovarian tumors, the transition from benign cystadenomas to tumors of low malignant potential (LMP) or carcinomas has been implicated. We recently encountered a case of term placenta with a diffuse cystic lesion of the villi. A 19-year-old primipara at 36 weeks of gestation underwent cesarean section due to breech presentation with premature rupture of the membranes; she delivered a mature male baby of 2,502 g with an Apgar score of 9/9. The placenta was 940 g in weight and 29 x 20 x 3 cm in size, and macroscopically had multiple cystic lesions (3-8 mm in diameter) that resembled hydatidiform moles.
