Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of cell-free Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA (cf-TB) testing as a biomarker for diagnosing tuberculous pleurisy (TP) due to challenges with low bacterial levels in pleural effusion samples.
  • Conducted across 11 research sites in China, the study analyzed PE samples from 1344 patients suspected of TP, using techniques like Xpert MTB/RIF and mycobacterial culture alongside cf-TB testing.
  • Results revealed that cf-TB testing had a significantly higher sensitivity (73.6%) for definite TP compared to Xpert (40.8%) and mycobacterial culture (54.2%), while maintaining 100% specificity across all tests.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the effectiveness of the CSF T-SPOT.TB test for diagnosing TB meningitis (TBM) in 96 patients with meningitis.
  • The test showed high diagnostic sensitivity (97.8%) and respectable specificity (78.0%), with positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) at 80.3% and 97.5%, respectively.
  • The CSF T-SPOT.TB test demonstrated strong performance across different stages of TBM with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.910, making it a reliable method for rapid and accurate diagnosis.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how prior anti-tuberculosis (TB) treatments affect the diagnosis of tuberculous lymphadenitis (TBLN) by evaluating various diagnostic methods like histology, microbiology, and molecular tests.
  • - A total of 89 patients were assessed, with significant findings showing that previous TB treatment notably lowered the culture test's effectiveness, while the Xpert test showed reduced sensitivity for those treated for over three months.
  • - The researchers concluded that for patients with a history of long-term TB treatment, it is crucial to use a combination of diagnostic tests to minimize the risk of false negatives, especially from the culture method.

Interleukin 8 (IL8) is an important chemokine that elicits host immune response against tuberculosis (TB). However, whether there is an association between IL8 gene polymorphism and TB susceptibility in the Chinese population is unknown. IL8 gene was amplified and sequenced to search for nucleotide polymorphisms among the Chinese population.

As the main structural protein of oil body, OLEOSIN is highly expressed only during seed development. OLEOSIN promoter is a very useful tool for seed-specific gene engineering and seed bioreactor designing. The B3 domain transcription factor leafy cotyledon2 (LEC2) plays an important role in regulating seed development and seed-specific gene expression.

Trichomislin, a novel ribosome-inactivating protein, was cloned from the genome of Trichosanthes kirilowii Maxim. The gene was recombined to prokaryotic expression vector and the protein was purified by cation-exchange chromatography. The secondary structure of trichomislin was measured by circular-dichroism analysis and the ratios of alpha-helices and beta-sheets were calculated.
