The host innate immune response is the first line of defense against pathogens and is orchestrated by the concerted expression of genes induced by microbial stimuli. Deregulated expression of these genes is linked to the initiation and progression of diseases associated with exacerbated inflammation. We identified topoisomerase 1 (Top1) as a positive regulator of RNA polymerase II transcriptional activity at pathogen-induced genes.

In recent years, researchers have proven the release of silver ions (Ag(+)) from silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) significantly affects their toxicity to bacteria and other organisms. Due to the difficulty in maintaining a steady flux of a high concentration of Ag(+), it is still challenging to develop a highly efficient, stable, and biocompatible Ag NP-based antimicrobial material. To circumvent this issue, we developed a new Ag-based bactericide through the fabrication of sunlight-driven and ultrafine silver/silver chloride anchored on reduced graphene oxide (Ag/AgCl/rGO).

Vasculogenic mimicry (VM) is a functional microcirculation pattern in malignant tumors accompanied by endothelium-dependent vessels and mosaic vessels. VM has been identified in more than 15 solid tumor types and is associated with poor differentiation, late clinical stage and poor prognosis. Classic anti-angiogenic agents do not target endothelium-dependent vessels and are not efficacious against tumors exhibiting VM.

Unlabelled: Twist1 is well known to induce epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and promote tumor metastasis. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are involved in the EMT process and are associated with metastasis in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In the present study, microRNA-26b-5p (miR-26b-5p) expression was consistently and significantly downregulated in HepG2-Twist1 HCC cell lines compared with HepG2-vector cell lines using microarrays (the HepG2-Twist1 cell line can stably express Twist1).

Unlabelled: Twist-1 and miRNAs have been reported to be associated with tumor metastasis and angiogenesis. However, the relationship between Twist-1 and miRNAs and the function of miRNAs remain largely undefined. We aimed to reveal the Twist-1-related miRNA expression profile and to determine whether Twist-1 functions in tumor metastasis and vasculogenic mimicry (VM) by regulating miRNA expression in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Wet scrubbing combined with ozone oxidation has become a promising technology for simultaneous removal of SO2 and NOx in exhaust gas. In this paper, a new 20-species, 76-step detailed kinetic mechanism was proposed between O3 and NOx. The concentration of N2O5 was measured using an in-situ IR spectrometer.

Objective: The study aims to explore the associations between various occupations and thyroid cancer risk.

Methods: A population-based, case-control study involving 462 histologically confirmed incident cases and 498 controls was conducted in Connecticut in 2010 to 2011.

Results: A significantly increased risk of thyroid cancer, particularly papillary microcarcinoma, was observed for those working as the health care practitioners and technical workers, health diagnosing and treating practitioners, and registered nurses.

Cobalt element plays an important role for the properties of magnetism and thermology in steels. In this work, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy combined with laser-induced fluorescence (LIBS-LIF) was studied to selectively enhance the intensities of Co lines. Two states of Co atoms were resonantly excited by a wavelength-tunable laser.

The known members of plant methyl esterase (MES) family catalyze the hydrolysis of a C-O ester linkage of methyl esters of several phytohormones including indole-3-acetic acid, salicylic acid and jasmonic acid. The genome of grapevine (Vitis vinifera) was found to contain 15 MES genes, designated VvMES1-15. In this report, VvMES5 was selected for molecular, biochemical and structural studies.

Self-healing microcapsules were synthesized by polymerization with a melamine urea-formaldehyde resin shell and an epoxy resin adhesive. The effects of the key factors, ., core-wall ratio, reaction temperature, pH and stirring rate, were investigated by characterizing microcapsule morphology, shell thickness, particle size distribution, mechanical properties and chemical nature.

Two novel rare chloro-containing benzylisoquinoline alkaloids, thalfoliolosumines A (1) and B (2), along with eight known isoquinoline alkaloids (3-10) were isolated from the whole plant of Thalictrum foliolosum. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by spectral analyses, including 1D and 2D NMR (COSY, HSQC, HMBC and NOESY) experiments. The antiproliferative effects of all the isolated compounds were evaluated by MTT method against MCF-7, PC-3, and U937 cells, and trypan blue method against HL-60 cells.

Traditional paocai brine (PB) is continuously propagated by back-slopping and contains numerous lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains. Although PB is important for the quality of paocai (Chinese sauerkraut), the taste features, taste-related compounds of PB-paocai and the effects of LAB communities from PB on the taste compounds remain unclear. An electronic tongue was used to evaluate the taste features of 13 PB-paocai samples.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play vital roles in cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). miR-26b has been confirmed as an important regulator in carcinogenesis and other pathological processes. miR-26b-5p is one member of the mature miR-26 family, and its functional role in proliferation, angiogenesis and apoptosis in HCC remains unknown.

Objective: An investigation of the role of the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 and its associated miRNAs in vasculogenic mimicry (VM) in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Methods: The Bcl-2 expression plasmid was constructed for transfection into the hepatocellular carcinoma cell line HepG2. Changes in the expression profiles of the miRNAs induced by Bcl-2 overexpression and their relationships with vasculogenic mimicry were analysed.

Viruses are obligate parasites and thus require the machinery of the host cell to replicate. Inhibition of host factors co-opted during active infection is a strategy hosts use to suppress viral replication and a potential pan-antiviral therapy. To define the cellular proteins and processes required for a virus during infection is thus crucial to understanding the mechanisms of virally induced disease.

Cholesterol import into mitochondria through the translocator protein (18 KDa) (TSPO) is the starting point and an important rate-limiting step in neurosteroidogenesis. For this reason TSPO has received increased attention in the pathophysiology of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In an effort to explore the role of TSPO in mediating the anti-PTSD effect, we first assessed the effects of the TSPO ligand AC-5216 in alleviating the enhanced anxiety and fear response in a time-dependent sensitization (TDS) procedure, a rat PTSD animal model.
