Acute profound sensorineural hearing loss as the initial manifestation of acute leukemia--report of a case.

This paper reports an unusual case in which acute lymphocytic leukemia presented acute profound sensorineural hearing loss as the initial manifestation of the disease. The patient is a 55-year-old woman who complained of left hearing loss of sudden onset. Pure tone audiometry revealed profound sensorineural hearing loss of the left ear at mid and low frequencies.

alpha,alpha-gem-Difluorination of alpha-(alkylthio)acetophenone derivatives with N-fluoropyridinium salts.

The alpha,alpha-gem-difluorination of 2',4'-difluoro-alpha-(methylthio)acetophenone (1a) with N-fluoropyridinium salts gave 2',4',alpha,alpha-tetrafluoro-alpha-(methylthio)acetophenone (3a). This reaction was accelerated by the addition of zinc chloride, zinc bromide or anhydrous iron(III) chloride, and higher yields than the reaction without additives were obtained. The gem-difluorination reaction using FP-T300 in the presence of zinc bromide was applicable to other alpha-(alkylthio)acetophenone derivatives (1).

Does the timing of hypertonic saline resuscitation affect its potential to prevent lung damage?

Hypertonic saline (HS) resuscitation has been reported to prevent lung damage by suppressing neutrophil activation in animal models. Data on the effectiveness of HS to prevent organ damage in the clinical setting are inconsistent. We investigated whether the timing of HS administration relative to neutrophil activation could affect its potential to block neutrophil responses.

[A successful case of hybrid therapy for the left main trunk and triple coronary vessel lesions with acute myocardial infarction and cardiogenic shock].

A 86-year-patient who had acute myocardial infarction and critical cardiogenic shock was diagnosed to have the left main trunk (LMT) and triple vessel disease. Emergent coronary artery bypass grafting to the left anterior descending artery was performed using saphenous vein graft without cardiopulmonary bypass through median sternotomy. On the 41st postoperative day, catheter intervention was performed to the remaining lesions by stenting of LMT and percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty to the right coronary artery lesions.

We tested if this is because of modulated neutrophil function by HS. Clinically relevant hypertonicity (10-25 mM) suppressed degranulation and superoxide formation in response to fMLP and blocked the activation of the mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPK) ERK1/2 and p38, but did not affect Ca2+ mobilization.

We report a rare case of aortic insufficiency due to the tears of the aortic cusps during percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA). Adiposin-1 and -2 exhibited potent inhibitory activities against alpha-amylase, human salivary alpha-amylase and disaccharidases isolated from porcine small intestine. Adiposins showed a potent inhibitory activity against alpha-glucoside hydrolases such as salivary and pancreatic alpha-amylases, and intestinal disaccharidases in vivo. They suppressed the increase of the blood glucose level and the secretion of insulin in mice and rats which both had been fasted and then forced-fed on cooked corn starch, sucrose or maltose. The suppression of the increase in the body weight gains, and of the secretion of insulin and triglyceride in blood were observed in the experimental animals which were given diet containing adiposins.

[Pre-operative chemotherapy of stomach cancer combined with local administration of OK-432--evaluation of macroscopic results].

We have developed OMF treatment which is consisting of endoscopical injection of OK-432 into the perilesional area of cancer, intraarterial or intravenous injection of mitomycin C by one shot and oral administration of 5-FU, and applied it to the patients with preoperative gastric cancer to whom remarkable macroscopic effects were obtained. We determined its efficacy by establishing a response criteria. Although there were no excellent results, the clinical results were rated as good in 5 lesions (50%) and as fair in 5 lesions (50%) out of 10 lesions in 9 cases.

A new chemotherapeutic agent, AB206, shows potent antibacterial activity against gram-negative bacteria, including most of the nalidixic acid-resistant strains tested. It strongly inhibits deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis in Escherichia coli, but only slightly inhibits ribonucleic acid and protein synthesis. Its activity on DNA synthesis in vivo and in vitro is greater than that of nalidixic acid.
