Background: The development of cerebral infarction after transient ischemia is attributed to postischemic delayed hypoperfusion in the microvascular region. In the present study, we assessed the microvascular perfusion capacity of infused liposome-encapsulated hemoglobin (LEH) in a therapeutic approach for transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO).

Methods: Two-hour middle cerebral artery occlusion rats were immediately subjected to intra-arterial infusion of LEH (LEH group) or saline (vehicle group) or no treatment (control group), and then to recanalization.

Detection of subtle ischemic injuries in moyamoya disease may enable optimization of timing of revascularization surgery, and could potentially improve functional outcomes. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) is widely used to study functional organization of the brain, but it remains unclear whether rs-fMRI could elucidate distinct characteristics in moyamoya disease. Here, we aimed to determine changes in a conventional rs-fMRI measure and analyze any associations with clinical symptoms and cerebral hemodynamics.

Article Synopsis
  • During glioma surgery, 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) and fluorescein sodium (Fl-Na) are used to enhance tumor visibility.
  • A study evaluated the effectiveness of these dyes in identifying the boundary between glioblastoma and normal brain tissue, measuring how well they highlight different tumor characteristics.
  • Results showed that 5-ALA was more effective in detecting tumor cells in boundary zones compared to Fl-Na, with some tumor cells found outside the areas highlighted by both agents.

Background: Some patients with aneurysm exhibit warning headaches without minor bleeding, and this could be caused by stretching of the aneurysm wall. Recently, our pathologic study observed subintimal fibrin deposition in a majority of the ruptured aneurysms. However, these findings also were observed in some unruptured aneurysms.

Background: Weekly administration of solvent-based paclitaxel is one of the standard second-line chemotherapy regimens for advanced gastric cancer. Nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel (nab-paclitaxel) was developed to improve the solubility of paclitaxel and does not need premedication to avoid infusion-related reactions associated with solvent-based paclitaxel. Additionally, higher doses of nab-paclitaxel can be administered over a shorter infusion time and at higher drug concentrations compared with solvent-based paclitaxel.

Background: Alcohol consumption combined with inactive aldehyde dehydrogenase-2 (ALDH2) and the presence of multiple esophageal Lugol-voiding lesions (LVLs; dysplasia) are strong predictors for multiple development of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) in East Asians. We invented a health risk appraisal (HRA) model for predicting the risk of ESCC based on drinking, smoking, dietary habits, and alcohol flushing, i.e.

Aims: The therapeutic efficacy of daclatasvir/asunaprevir was inferior in patients with non-structural protein 5A (NS5A)-R30Q mutant hepatitis C virus strains at baseline, compared with those with wild-type strains, even though the half maximal effective concentration of NS5A inhibitors was lower in mutant strains than in wild-type strains. In these patients, R30Q and Y93H mutant strains, which are highly resistant to NS5A inhibitors, emerged at virologic failure. The mechanisms involved in such virologic failure were examined.

Background: Whether additional indirect bypasses effectively contribute to revascularization in combined procedures remains unclear in patients with moyamoya disease.

Objective: To evaluate the longitudinal changes associated with combined procedures while following up pediatric and adult patients long term and to assess whether any other clinical factors or hemodynamic parameters affected these changes to determine an optimal surgical strategy.

Methods: We studied 58 hemispheres in 43 adults and 39 hemispheres in 26 children who underwent combined revascularization for moyamoya disease.

Co-expression of physically linked genes occurs surprisingly frequently in eukaryotes. Such chromosomal clustering may confer a selective advantage as it enables coordinated gene regulation at the chromatin level. We studied the chromosomal organization of genes involved in male reproductive development in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Algal bloom is typically caused by aberrant propagation of a single species, resulting in its predomination in the local population. While environmental factors including temperature and eutrophication are linked to bloom, the precise mechanism of its formation process is still obscure. Here, we isolated a bacterial strain that promotes growth of Heterosigma akashiwo, a Raphidophyceae that causes harmful algal blooms.

The glycosylation of pterostilbene by cultured plant cells of Phytolacca americana gave pterostilbene 4'-O-β-D-glucoside. Both pterostilbene and its 4'-0-β-D- glucoside induced type XVII collagen expression in the EpiDermFT EFT-400 human skin cell model. Pterostilbene 4'-O-β-D-glucoside strongly induced type XVII collagen expression rather than pterostilbene.

Background: Activated leukocytes infiltrating the liver contribute to the provocation of alcoholic hepatitis. Glucocorticoid induces the demargination of leukocytes from the hepatic sinusoids, whereas granulocyte-monocyte absorptive apheresis (GMA) removes leukocytes from the circulation. Thus, the usefulness of a sequential therapy consisting of glucocorticoid infusions followed by GMA was evaluated in patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis.
