Article Synopsis
  • The pacing threshold is how well a leadless pacemaker works and it affects how long the battery lasts.
  • Sometimes, when the pacemaker is first used, it might need more power to keep working, but later it can improve, although it can also get worse again.
  • It's important to be careful with leadless pacemakers because taking them out and putting them back can lead to serious problems, so knowing how they work can help avoid unnecessary surgeries.

Formation and electronic states of graphene nanoribbons with arm-chair edges (AGNR) are studied on the SiC(0001) vicinal surfaces toward the [11-00] direction. The surface step and terrace structures of both 4H and 6H-SiC substrates are used as the growth templates of one-dimensional arrays of AGNRs, which are prepared using the carbon molecular beam epitaxy followed by hydrogen intercalation. A band gap is observed above the-band maximum by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) for the both samples.

Article Synopsis
  • This study looked at how to keep a part of the heart called the left atrial posterior wall isolated after another procedure meant to treat a heart problem called atrial fibrillation.
  • Researchers compared different ways of isolating this area and found that some methods are better than others in keeping it isolated.
  • They discovered that when the isolation was done differently, like by not touching the inside of the wall, there were fewer chances of it reconnecting and causing problems again.

Background: In performing left bundle branch pacing (LBBP), various QRS morphologies are observed as the lead penetrates the ventricular septum (VS). This study aimed to evaluate these characteristics and infer the mechanism underlying each QRS morphology.

Methods: In 19 patients who met the strict criteria for LBB capture, we classified the QRS morphologies observed during the LBBP procedure into seven patterns, the first five of which were determined by the depth of penetration: right ventricular septal pacing (RVSP), intraventricular septal pacing (IVSP1 and IVSP2), endocardial side of left ventricular septal pacing (LVSeP), nonselective LBBP (NS-LBBP), selective LBBP (S-LBBP), and NS-LBBP with anodal capture.

Background: Although left bundle branch area pacing (LBBAP) can capture the His-Purkinje conduction system and create a narrower paced QRS duration, its mechanism has not been investigated. In this case report, ventricular activation patterns were evaluated using three-dimensional electroanatomical mapping during LBBAP and right ventricular septal pacing (RVSP).

Case Summary: An 81-year-old woman with sick sinus syndrome received LBBAP, followed 4 months later with atrial fibrillation ablation.

We investigated the 4 × 1 to 8 × 2 structural transition temperature of quasi-one-dimensional indium chains on the (111) surface of Si substrates possessing various carrier concentrations via low-energy electron diffraction. The transition temperature was found to decrease from 120 K to below 77 K with increasing carrier concentration on both n- and p-type Si(111) substrates. This decrease in the transition temperature was found to be proportional to the shift of the Fermi level, which was numerically evaluated using a one-dimensional charge transfer model of the interface.

Cathepsin K inhibitors are new drugs with the potential for the treatment of osteoporosis because they sustain bony remodelling better than bone resorption inhibitors such as bisphosphonates. The treatment of osteoporosis with inhibitors of bony resorption is associated with osteonecrosis of the jaw, as the deterioration in bony quality that they induce is thought to be one of its causes. The quality of bone is delineated by structural and material characteristics (which include the degree and quality of mineralisation, and depends on the content of proteoglycan and the structural integrity of the bony collagen).

Bone quality is defined by structural and material characteristics. Most studies on the mandible have focused on the analysis of structural characteristics, with insufficient investigation of material characteristics. This study tested whether zoledronate affects the material characteristics of newly formed mandibular bone.

The electronic states of Au-induced atomic nanowires on Ge(0 0 1) (Au/Ge(0 0 1) NWs) have been studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with linearly polarized light. We have found three electron pockets around the [Formula: see text] line, where the Fermi surfaces are closed in a surface Brillouin zone (SBZ). The results indicate 2D Fermi surfaces of Au/Ge(0 0 1) NWs whereas the atomic structure is 1D.

Platinum-based chemotherapy plus cetuximab represents the first-line treatment for recurrent or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. The most common adverse events associated with cetuximab are infusion reactions and skin reactions, and a risk of venous thromboembolic events has also recently been reported in association with cetuximab. It is well known that thrombosis is a common complication of malignancy, and represents the second most frequent cause of mortality in cancer patients.

Local electron-phonon coupling of a one-dimensionally nanorippled graphene is studied on a SiC(0001) vicinal substrate. We have characterized local atomic and electronic structures of a periodically nanorippled graphene (3.4 nm period) prepared on a macrofacet of the 6H-SiC crystal using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES).

Atomic and electronic structures of the Ge(111) (√3 × √3)R30°-Au surface with two metallic bands are studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The bias-voltage-dependent periodic structure observed by STM is consistent with the electronic structure calculated for an optimized conjugate honeycomb chained trimer (CHCT) model. Electrons are selectively doped to the electron-like surface metallic band by excess Au atoms, which form triangle structures with the Au trimers of the CHCT model.

A membrane with ordered 3D ionic nanochannels constructed by in situ photopolymerization of a thermotropic liquid-crystalline monomer shows high filtration performance and ion selectivity. The nanostructured membrane exhibits water-treatment performance superior to that of an amorphous membrane prepared from the isotropic melt of the monomer. Self-organized nanostructured membranes have great potential for supplying high-quality water.

Atomic motion through excitation of extended surface electronic states on Ge(001) is studied using extraction of electrons by scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory. Single-electron excitation into the surface states nonlocally alters the tilting orientation of the surface Ge dimer, and the change rate depends on the excitation energy. Theoretical investigations identify the excited electronic states for the dimer motion, and clarify the strong coupling between the surface state electrons and a local vibrational mode of the dimer for changing the tilting orientation.

We observed a rare case of the right persistent hypoglossal artery (PHA) in the posterior cranial fossa of a deceased 74-year-old Japanese man who did not have any clinical manifestations related to this anomaly when alive. The large-sized PHA originating from the cervical internal carotid artery passed through the hypoglossal canal together with the hypoglossal nerve and reached the posterior cranial fossa to anastomose the basilar artery. In addition, the ipsilateral vertebral artery and bilateral posterior communicating arteries were hypoplastic.

Hydrogen-gas etching of a 6H-SiC(0001) surface and subsequent annealing in nitrogen atmosphere leads to the formation of a silicon oxynitride (SiON) epitaxial layer. A quantitative low-energy electron diffraction analysis revealed that the SiON layer has a hetero-double-layer structure: a silicate monolayer on a silicon nitride monolayer via Si-O-Si bridge bonds. There are no dangling bonds in the unit cell, which explains the fact that the structure is robust against air exposure.

When tin (Sn) atoms are deposited on a clean germanium (Ge) (001) surface at room temperature, buckled dimers originating from the Sn atoms are formed at the Ge-dimer position. We identified the dimer as a heterogeneous Sn-Ge dimer by reversing its buckling orientation with a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) at 80 kelvin. An atomic seesaw switch was formed for one-dimensional electronic conduction in the Ge dimer-row direction by using the STM to reversibly flip the buckling orientation of the Sn-Ge dimer and to set up standing-wave states.

In an entomological study in 2002, the degree of domestic and peridomestic infestation with triatomine bugs and the geographical distribution of such infestations were investigated in north-central Guatemala. The survey team searched for triatomines in houses constructed with mud walls or thatched roofs, in villages suspected of being infested. The level of infestation observed was lower than that seen in the same area and in eastern Guatemala, in a preliminary survey, 3 years earlier.

We have observed a novel modification of a surface state due to a local strain field induced by a nanopattern formation. N adsorption on the Cu(100) surface induces a nanoscale grid pattern, where the clean Cu regions remain periodically. The lattice is contracted on the clean region by adjacent c(2 x 2)N domains, which have a larger lattice constant.
