Background: Moving images are often essential in medical education, to learn new procedures and advanced skills, but, in the past, high-quality movie transmission was technically much more challenging than transmitting still pictures because of technological limitations and cost.

To evaluate trophic biomagnification of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in an estuary of the Ariake Sea, Japan, we measured concentrations of 209 PCB congeners and 28 PBDE congeners, and nitrogen stable isotope (δ(15)N) levels in living aquatic organisms. The determination of electronic states of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) has been a central issue in science and nanotechnology of carbon nanotubes. We here describe the oxidation and reduction potentials of a single SWNT determined by in situ photoluminescence (PL) spectroelectrochemical measurements. By PL imaging and single SWNT PL spectroscopy, the stepwise quenching behavior of the PL from a single (7,5)SWNT was detected as the outer-applied potentials increased.

In this study, we describe a novel method for producing valuable chemicals from glucose and xylose in Escherichia coli. The notable features in our method are avoidance of plasmids and expensive inducers for foreign gene expression to reduce production costs; foreign genes are knocked into the chromosome, and their expression is induced with xylose that is present in most biomass feedstock. As loci for the gene knock-in, lacZYA and some pseudogenes are chosen to minimize unexpected effects of the knock-in on cell physiology.

We describe, for the first time, the perforation of the cell membrane in the targeted single cell based on the nanosecond pulsed near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation of a thin film of carbon nanotubes that act as an effective photon absorber as well as stimuli generator. Genome editing is an important technology for bacterial cellular engineering, which is commonly conducted by homologous recombination-based procedures, including gene knockout (disruption), knock-in (insertion), and allelic exchange. We describe here the construction of a series of 71 vectors to silence central carbon metabolism genes in Escherichia coli. The vectors inducibly express antisense RNAs called paired-terminus antisense RNAs, which have a higher silencing efficacy than ordinary antisense RNAs. By measuring mRNA amounts, measuring activities of target proteins, or observing specific phenotypes, it was confirmed that all the vectors were able to silence the expression of target genes efficiently.

The determination of the electronic states of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with a specific chirality has been a central issue in the science of SWNTs. Here we present the empirical equations with fitting parameters for the determination of the reduction and oxidation potentials of SWNTs for a wide range of diameters and chiral angles. In these equations, a distinct chirality family dependence of the reduction potentials is observed, while the oxidation potentials show a simple diameter dependence nearly proportional to the inversed nanotube diameter.

Emerging evidence suggests that chronic exposure to DDT and its derivatives is associated with a variety of human disorders such as anemia. The present study demonstrated that p,p'-DDT caused microcystic anemia in a dose-dependent manner (0, 5, 50, and 500 ppm) in the long-term study up to 2 years. To elucidate the mechanism(s) by which p,p'-DDT induces anemia, certain hematological parameters were assessed in rats fed specific doses of p,p'-DDT for 2 weeks, and the effect of lipopolysaccharide on anemia of inflammation was also examined in p,p'-DDT-treated rats.

The complete genome sequences of two new iflaviruses (genus Iflavirus, family Iflaviridae) were determined. These viral sequences were first identified in RNA-seq contig sequences of Nilaparvata lugens in two distinct colonies: Izumo and Kagoshima. Ytterbium 3+ ions in alcohol were found to be reduced to the corresponding 2+ ions upon laser irradiation with a stepwise two-color two-photon excitation. The infrared (975-nm) pulse with a duration of 4 ns pumps the ground state to the 4f excited state with the transition of (2)F(5/2) ← (2)F(7/2), and the second photon (355-nm) generates the charge transfer (CT) state of Cl 3p to Yb 4f; the reduction then occurs. Laser energy and excitation wavelength dependencies well-explain the above mechanism.
