Developmental changes in craniofacial morphology in subjects with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Lateral cephalometric radiographs of 35 Japanese male patients suffering from Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) were taken longitudinally from 10 to 20 years of age. Eighteen landmarks were placed and 15 angles and four linear distances calculated. Profile diagrams (profilograms) were produced to analyse changes in craniofacial morphological growth in the DMD subjects.

IFN-alpha enhances TNF-alpha-induced apoptosis through down-regulation of c-Myc protein expression in HL-60 cells.

We examined the effect of interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) in combination with tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-alpha) on growth, differentiation and apoptosis in HL-60 human myeloid leukemia cells. IFN-alpha inhibited cell growth and induced apoptosis, but not differentiation, in HL-60 cells. IFN-alpha enhanced TNF-alpha-induced apoptosis.

Cystadenoma of the liver with ovarian-like stroma: case report.

Cystadenomas are rare benign tumors with malignant potential. A 36-year-old woman presented with a 20-cm cystic mass in the left lobe of the liver. Surgery confirmed the diagnostic imaging findings.

Valsartan is known to be excreted largely as unchanged compound and is minimally metabolized in man. Although the only notable metabolite is 4-hydroxyvaleryl metabolite (4-OH valsartan), the responsible enzyme has not been clarified at present. The current in vitro studies were conducted to identify the cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes involved in the formation of 4-OH valsartan.

Mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades are activated in plants during responses to pathogens or to pathogen-derived elicitors and mediate intracellular stress responses. Here, we show that a rice (Oryza sativa) MAPK, OsMAPK6, was posttranslationally activated in a cell culture by a sphingolipid elicitor. Suppression of OsMAPK6 expression by RNA interference resulted in a strong reduction of pathogen-induced Phe ammonia-lyase mRNA, whereas the mRNA level of another rice MAPK, OsMAPK5a, was highly increased.

Deletion of N-terminus of human tyrosine hydroxylase type 1 enhances stability of the enzyme in AtT-20 cells.

Wildtype human tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) type 1 and 4 mutants (del-52, a form with the first 52 amino acid residues deleted; del-157, one with the first 157 amino acid residues deleted; RR-EE, one in which Arg37-Arg38 was replaced by Glu37-Glu38; and S40D, one in which Ser40 was replaced by Asp40) were expressed in AtT-20 mouse neuroendocrine cells in order to clarify how deeply the N-terminus of TH is involved in the efficient production of dopamine (DA) in mammalian cells. The amounts of DA that accumulated in AtT-20 cells expressing these human TH type 1 (hTH1) phenotypes were in the following order: del-52 = del-157 = RR-EE > S40D > wildtype, although the enzyme activities of del-52 and del-157 were lower than those of wildtype, RR-EE, and S40D. The observation on immunoblot analyses that the N-terminus-deleted hTH1 mutants were much more stable than wildtype can reconcile the discrepant results.

Resistance to excessive bodyweight gain in risperidone-injected rats.

1. The present study was carried out to explain the resistance of rats injected subcutaneously with risperidone, the atypical antipsychotic drug, for 21 consecutive days at 0.1 mg/kg per day (a dose equivalent to the one used for patients) to result in an excessive bodyweight despite the increase in diet-uptake in rats against risperidone-induced decrease in body temperature.

Peripheral lipopolysaccharide induces apoptosis in the murine olfactory bulb.

The olfactory bulb (OB) is one of the few structures in the adult mammalian CNS that contains a continuous supply of newly generated neurons in the subventricular zone. Therefore, the balance between the supply of new cells and apoptosis in the OB might determine olfactory function. Lipopolysaccharide-induced tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha triggers the apoptotic cascade mediated by the TNF/TNF receptor (TNFR) pathway.

[Penetrating chest trauma in which thoracoscopy was helpful; report of a case].

A 32-year-old builder suffered from a chest trauma in a construction area. A ratchet penetrated his right chest wall posterolaterally, and he was transferred to our hospital. A chest X-ray and a computed tomography (CT) revealed that the tip of the instrument remained in the thoracic cavity and there were no other obvious damages including pneumothorax, hemothorax, and liver damage.

Midterm results of mitral valve repair with artificial chordae in children.

Objective: We have used artificial chordal replacement with expanded polytetrafluoroethylene sutures for mitral valve repair in children and reported favorable early clinical results. In this article we evaluate the midterm results of mitral valve repair with expanded polytetrafluoroethylene sutures in 39 children.

Methods: From April 1995 through September 2003, mitral valve repair with chordal replacement using expanded polytetrafluoroethylene sutures was performed in 39 patients.

Serum cross-linked N-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen for evaluation of renal osteodystrophy in hemodialysis patients.

Background: Useful markers of bone resorption are needed for hemodialysis patients with renal osteodystrophy. This study investigated the use of a new immunoassay for cross-linked N-terminal telopeptide of type 1 collagen to assess bone changes in hemodialysis patients.

Methods: Radial bone mineral density was examined in 178 hemodialysis patients at baseline and after 12 months.

Is death-feigning adaptive? Heritable variation in fitness difference of death-feigning behaviour.

The adaptation of death-feigning (thanatosis), a subject that has been overlooked in evolutionary biology, was inferred in a model prey-and-predator system. We studied phenotypic variation among individuals, fitness differences, and the inheritance of death-feigning behaviour in the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). Two-way artificial selections for the duration of death-feigning, over 10 generations, showed a clear direct response in the trait and a correlated response in the frequency of death-feigning, thus indicating variation and inheritance of death-feigning behaviour.

Human Parvovirus B19 nonstructural protein transactivates the p21/WAF1 through Sp1.

The expression of human Parvovirus B19 nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) induces cell cycle arrest at the G1 phase and is accompanied by increased expression of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, p21/WAF1. Here, we provide direct evidence that NS1 mediates the transactivation of p21/WAF1. Up-regulation of p21/WAF1 by wild-type NS1 but not an NS1 mutant deleted of its NTP binding motif was observed.

SHP-1 expression in primary central nervous system B-cell lymphomas in immunocompetent patients reflects maturation stage of normal B cell counterparts.

SHP-1 is an important negative regulator involved in signaling through receptors for cytokine/growth factors, and differential patterns of SHP-1 expression in several types of B-cell lymphomas closely resemble the patterns seen in their normal B cell counterparts. In an effort to elucidate the origin of primary central nervous system lymphomas (PCNSL), the present study assessed 32 cases of PCNSL. Tumors were subclassified according to WHO classification and were evaluated by immunohistochemistry for expression of antigens associated with germinal center (GC) (CD10, Bcl-6) and non-GC stages (SHP-1, CD138).

HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors prevent bone loss in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Aims: It has been reported that 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl co-enzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors increase bone mineral density (BMD) in vivo. We investigated the effect of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors on BMD in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Patients And Methods: We selected 122 patients with Type 2 diabetes, who were not taking active vitamin D preparations.

Crack cocaine use and adherence to antiretroviral treatment among HIV-infected black women.

Since the appearance of crack cocaine in the 1980s, unprecedented numbers of women have become addicted. A disproportionate number of female crack users are Black and poor. We analyzed interview data of HIV-infected women > or = 18 years of age reported to 12 health departments between July 1997 and December 2000 to ascertain if Black women reported crack use more than other HIV-infected women and to examine the relationship between crack use and antiretroviral treatment (ART) adherence among Black women.

Simultaneous determination of levodopa and 3-O-methyldopa in human plasma by liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection.

A simple and rapid assay is described for the simultaneous analysis of levodopa (l-DOPA) and 3-O-methyldopa (3-OMD) in human plasma samples, applying an ion-pair reversed-phase liquid chromatographic method with electrochemical detection, designed for clinical trials performed to study the effect of peripheral catechol-O-methyltransferase inhibitors on the metabolism of l-DOPA. After protein precipitation of 100 microl plasma sample aliquots with perchloric acid, the analytes are directly injected, separated within 10 min and simultaneously quantified down to 20 ng/ml by an electrochemical detector equipped with a dual-electrode system operating in redox mode eliminating effectively potential endogenous and exogenous interferences. The intra-assay precision for l-DOPA and 3-OMD was 1.

Effects of vitamin K2 in hemodialysis patients with low serum parathyroid hormone levels.

In patients with adynamic bone disease, the bone contains few osteoblasts or osteoclasts and bone turnover is slow, so the risk of fracture is increased. The decrease of bone remodeling may also decrease the capacity of bone to buffer calcium, leading to an increase of the calcium x phosphate product and an increased risk of arterial calcification. Such findings emphasize that an effective treatment for adynamic bone disease is required.

Tetrahydrobiopterin biosynthesis in white and brown adipose tissues is enhanced following intraperitoneal administration of bacterial lipopolysaccharide.

Tetrahydrobiopterin is an essential cofactor for nitric oxide synthase (NOS). This study was undertaken to examine the effects of intraperitoneally injected lipopolysaccharide on tetrahydrobiopterin biosynthesis in murine white and brown adipose tissues. Tetrahydrobiopterin content, catalytic activity and mRNA expression level of GTP cyclohydrolase I (GCH), rate-controlling enzyme in de novo biosynthesis of tetrahydrobiopterin, in both adipose tissues were up-regulated by 500-microg lipopolysaccharide at 6 h after the injection.

Different risk factors for the maximum and the mean carotid intima-media thickness in hemodialysis patients.

Emergent surgery for 3 aged patients who refused elective operation for thoracic aortic aneurysm.

This report describes 3 aged patients undergoing emergent surgery who refused elective operation for a thoracic aortic aneurysm because of freedom from symptoms attributable to the aneurysm at the time of presentation. A 77-year-old woman with a thoracoabdominal aneurysm 57 mm in diameter at presentation had recurrent hemoptysis 12 months later. A 78-year-old man with a saccular type distal arch aneurysm 64 mm in diameter at presentation was transported with shock and hemothorax 27 months later.
