A novel first exon, E1(4), whose sequence was distinct from those of the three known first exons, E1(1), E1(2), and E1(3), of the rat PRL receptor (PRL-R) gene was identified by cDNA cloning for the 5'-end region of PRL-R mRNA expressed in the rat brain. Sequence analysis revealed the presence of two different length E1(4) cDNAs. The longer cDNA contained the 243-bp E1(4) sequence, and the shorter cDNA lacked the 139-bp sequence at the 5'-end of the longer one.

Insulin receptor (IR) and IGF-I receptor (IGF-IR) are structurally and functionally related and belong to the tyrosine kinase receptor family. In teleosti such as salmonids and turbot, occurrence of multiple IR and IGF-IR members has been reported, but the structures of a complete set of both IR and IGF-IR members in a single teleost species have not yet been characterized. In this study, we cloned and analysed four distinct cDNA clones for IR and IGF-IR members from the liver and kidney of the Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus).

Object: There is growing evidence to indicate that tissue transplantation can potentially be a restorative neurosurgical treatment for patients with Parkinson disease (PD). In this study the authors investigated the clinical effect of unilateral intrastriatal grafting of autologous sympathetic neurons in patients with PD.

Methods: Four patients with PD who had been observed for 1 year after graft placement of autologous sympathetic neurons were selected for an analysis of the effect of that procedure.

Ghrelin is a novel growth hormone-releasing peptide isolated from rat stomach. In the present study, we report expression of a ghrelin gene-derived transcript (GGDT) in the mouse testis. Analysis of GGDT cDNA revealed that the 68 bp sequence at the 5'-end was unique and the remaining 252 bp sequence was identical with the sequence encoded by exons 4 and 5 of mouse ghrelin gene.

A radiation streaming experiment has been carried out at the Takasaki Ion Accelerator Facility for Advanced Radiation Application at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute in a room housing a Cu target irradiated with 68 MeV protons and in a labyrinth of three-legs having a total length of 29 m. In the experiment, neutron and gamma ray energy spectra, neutron reaction rates, and neutron and gamma ray dose equivalent rates were measured using various counters and dosimeters. The experimental data show the applicability of some empirical formulas for estimating the thermal neutron flux in a room and neutrons streaming in a labyrinth designed for a proton accelerator operating in the intermediate energy region.

In diadromous and euryhaline teleosts, it has been established that prolactin (PRL) is a major hormone regulating the maintenance of water and electrolyte homeostasis by acting on its receptor (PRLR) expressed in the osmoregulatory organs. To investigate the major physiological role of PRL in a marine teleost, cDNA for the Japanese flounder (Paralichtys olivaceus) prolactin receptor (fPRLR) has been cloned and characterized. The predicted fPRLR is composed of 636 amino acids conserving common structural features, such as the WSXWS motif and box 1, that are observed in the members of the cytokine receptor superfamily.

Ghrelin is a growth hormone-releasing peptide recently discovered in the stomach of rat and human as an endogenous ligand for growth hormone-secretagogue receptor. In the present study, a full-length cDNA for mouse ghrelin has been cloned from the stomach using the oligo-capping and rapid amplification methods, and the organization of its gene and promoter has been analyzed. The mouse ghrelin cDNA was 521 bp long, consisting of 44 bp 5'-noncoding region, 354 bp coding region encoding a pre-proghrelin composed of 117 amino acid residues and 123 bp 3'-noncoding region.

Mesencephalic precursor cells may one day provide dopaminergic neurons for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. However, the generation of dopaminergic neurons from mesencephalic precursors has been difficult to follow, partly because an appropriate means for recognizing mesencephalic ventricular zone precursors has not been available. To visualize and isolate live dopamine (DA)-producing neurons in the embryonic ventral mesencephalon, we generated transgenic mice expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP) under the control of the rat tyrosine hydroxylase gene promoter. In the transgenic mice, GFP expression was observed in the developing DA neurons containing tyrosine hydroxylase. The outgrowth and cue-dependent guidance of GFP-labeled axons was monitored in vitro with brain culture systems.

A 69-year-old right-handed man who exhibited unilateral spatial neglect in association with a chronic subdural haematoma, presented with mild left arm and leg weakness first noted 4 weeks prior to admission. Neurologic examination on admission revealed a mild left hemiparesis, including the face. Neuropsychologic examination revealed left unilateral spatial neglect, but no language disturbance.

Here, we report on an elderly woman with sarcoidosis and Hashimoto's disease who later developed myasthenia gravis. She was 68-year-old with a long history of Hashimoto's disease who had a clinical diagnosis of sarcoidosis with uveritis at the age of 66 years. On laboratory examination, angiotensin-converting enzyme, lysozyme and gamma-globulin were elevated and there was bilateral hilar lymphoadenopathy.

Background: Nedaplatin, a platinum analog with less renal toxicity and similar efficacy for cervical carcinoma, recently has been shown to have a synergistic effect on cervical carcinoma lines in combination with cisplatin. To determine the clinical efficacy of this combination in patients with cervical carcinoma, the authors conducted a Phase I/II study of intravenous nedaplatin and intraarterial cisplatin combined with transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE).

Methods: Eligibility criteria were as follows: cervical carcinoma (Stages IB2-IV; International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics), 16-70 years of age, performance status between 0 and 2, and adequate bone marrow, renal, and hepatic function.
