Reactive species are involved in various aspects of neoplastic diseases, including carcinogenesis, cancer-specific metabolism and therapeutics. Non-thermal plasma (NTP) can directly provide reactive species, by integrating atmospheric and interjacent molecules as substrates, to represent a handy strategy to load oxidative stress in situ. NTP causes apoptosis and/or ferroptosis specifically in cancer cells of various types.

[1]Benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophenes (BTBTs) are important molecules that have been extensively studied as high-performance organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). Therefore, it is important to develop a simple synthetic method for these molecules. In this paper, a synthetic method to obtain the BTBTs from 2-arylbenzo[b]thiophenes and elemental sulfur, in which two C-S bonds are formed at once, is described.

Although guidelines recommend early aspirin administration after diagnosis of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), the decision of pretransfer aspirin administration is at the discretion of the primary physicians. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether pretransfer aspirin administration was associated with better angiographical outcomes in patients with STEMI. This study compared the angiographic findings of thrombolysis in myocardial infarction (TIMI) flow grade in the infarct-related artery before percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) between patients who received pretransfer aspirin and those who did not.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to create a system for predicting the recurrence of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma after surgery by analyzing blood markers related to inflammation and coagulation.
  • Researchers enrolled 491 esophageal cancer patients from 2004 to 2012 and used statistical methods to group them based on serum markers like C-reactive protein and fibrinogen, assessing how these groups related to survival without recurrence.
  • Results showed three patient clusters, with those in the inflammation-related clusters (1 and 2) having worse survival outcomes compared to cluster 3, indicating that inflammatory markers could be significant predictors of recurrence-free survival.

  • Durvalumab has been used in patients with unresectable stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but its effectiveness for those with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations is still uncertain.
  • A study analyzed 673 patients who received chemoradiotherapy (CRT), finding 51 with EGFR mutations; those patients showed a higher percentage of females and never-smokers.
  • Both EGFR-positive and negative groups exhibited similar progression-free survival rates post-durvalumab treatment, with pneumonitis being the most common adverse effect, suggesting durvalumab may be a viable option for EGFR-positive patients.

Purpose: To compared the vessel density (VD) around the optic nerve head (ONH) in eyes with cone-rod dystrophy (CORD) and healthy control eyes in a sector-wise manner and to investigate the relationship between VD around the ONH and visual function in CORD eyes.

Methods: Twenty-six eyes in 14 CORD patients and 25 eyes in 25 healthy control subjects were examined. Using OCT angiography images, the VDs in the superficial and deep capillary plexus at the macula (sVDm and dVDm) and those around the ONH in the superior, temporal, inferior and nasal region (VDnh_s, VDnh_t, VDnh_i, and VDnh_n, respectively) were measured for each eye.

Concerns have been raised about the loss of genetic diversity in Japanese native horses because of their declining populations. In this study, we investigated the genetic variation of four genes, myostatin (MSTN), ligand-dependent nuclear receptor corepressor like (LCORL), doublesex and mab-3 related transcription factor 3 (DMRT3), and 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 1A (HTR1A), which are associated with horse phenotypic traits, in six Japanese horse breeds (Hokkaido, Kiso, Noma, Misaki, Tokara, and Yonaguni). MSTN, LCORL, DMRT3, and HTR1A showed polymorphisms in the Kiso; Hokkaido and Noma; Hokkaido; and Kiso, Tokara, and Yonaguni breeds, respectively.

T-cell-engaging bispecific antibody (T-BsAb, also known as BiTE) therapy has emerged as a powerful therapeutic modality against multiple myeloma. Given that T-BsAb therapy redirects endogenous T cells to eliminate tumor cells, reinvigorating dysfunctional T cells may be a potential approach to improve the efficacy of T-BsAb. While various immunostimulatory cytokines can potentiate effector T-cell functions, the optimal cytokine treatment for T-BsAb therapy is yet to be established, partly due to a concern of cytokine release syndrome driven by aberrant interferon (IFN)-γ production.
