We compared the relative amounts and properties of cyclic adenosine 3':5'-monophosphate (cAMP)-binding proteins in surgical specimens of Wilms' tumor and normal kidney. Cytosolic fractions of both tissues contained type I and type II isozymes of cAMP-dependent protein kinase (adenosine triphosphate: protein phosphotransferase, EC 2.7.

Combination of dibutyryl adenosine 3', 5'-cyclic monophosphate or prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) and papaverine effectively induced differentiation of neuroblastoma in mice. Two cases of human neuroblastoma with stage III and IV were administered intraaortic PGE1 infusion combined with oral papaverine and conventional chemotherapy. There were no noticeable side effects and the treatment was effective in decreasing tumor size and promoting tumor maturation in the infused area.

Neuroblastoma, one of the commonest malignant childhood tumors, arises from the adrenal glands and/or sympathetic ganglia, and metastases into lymph nodes, bone marrow, bones, etc. Patients with advanced stages of neuroblastoma are poorly responsive to current combined chemo-radiotherapy. However, neuroblastoma is known to maturate into benign ganglioneuroma spontaneously or induced by certain chemicals.

We have established the rabbit brain tumor model. The domestic rabbits (Japanese White) inplanted the VX2 rabbit epidermoid carcinoma cell were died within three weeks after the inplantation. These brains showed massive brain tumor remarkably infiltrating into the surrounding brain.

Cyclic adenosine 3':5'-monophosphate (cAMP)-dependent protein kinases from three clones of C1300 neuroblastoma, established as growing tumors in A/jax mice, were identified and characterized. Mean (+/- SD) intratumor concentrations of cAMP ranged from 5.0 +/- 2.

Three cases are presented in which a rare complication occurred after a shunt operation for hydrocephalus. On postoperative computerized tomography (CT) scans, extensive low-density areas appeared in the white matter along the ventricular catheter. After shunt revision, gradual resolution or disappearance of the low-density area was clearly demonstrated on CT.

A case of astroblastoma in a male newborn baby was reported. He has been suffered from convulsive seizures from six hours later after the birth, not controlled by the anticonvulsants, and lumbar tap revealed bloody cerebrospinal fluid. He had no response against the noxious stimuli and left clonic hemiconvulsion, and showed anisocoria, left pupil was dilated.

A case of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) producing primary intracranial embryonal carcinoma was reported with special reference to the chemotherapy. The patient was a 14-year-old male who had suffered from vomiting and disturbance of consciousness. CT scan revealed a tumor originating in the anterior part of the third ventricle and expanding into both lateral ventricles.

The southern Japan's soft coral, Sarcophyton glaucum, was found to contain several polyhydroxylates steroids. One of the minor components was isolated and its structure was established as 24 xi-methylcholestane-1 beta, 3 beta, 5 alpha, 6 beta, 25-pentol 25-monoacetate from spectral evidence and from comparison with a reference compound, 5 alpha-spirostan-1 beta, 3 beta, 5 alpha, 6 beta-tetrol, which was synthesized from ruscogenin. A mixture of 1 beta, 3 beta, 5 alpha, 6 beta-tetra hydroxy C27- and C28-sterols was also isolated.

The authors have developed a simplified technique of lumbar subarachnoid peritoneal shunt in which the spinal tube is easily introduced through a puncture needle without doing a laminectomy. Seventeen cases of communicating hydrocephalus of various orgin have been treated by this procedure. In this paper, we reported our shunting system and the technique of precedures, and discussed the clinical results and some advantages of this method.
