Botulinum toxin injection adjunct to bilateral medial rectus recession is a documented procedure for correcting the large angle of infantile esotropia. A 9-year-old boy presented with a large angle of esotropia (80 PD) and high myopia. He underwent bilateral medial rectus recession with an adjunct botulinum toxin injection.

Anionic/nonionic surfactants for controlled synthesis of highly concentrated sub-50 nm polystyrene spheres.

Polystyrene nanospheres are of great importance in 3D hard templating along with many other fields like pharmaceuticals and coatings. Therefore, it is important to be able to prepare polystyrene beads with different sphere sizes that suit each application. In this work, the emulsion polymerization method was used to prepare monodispersed polystyrene (PS) spheres with an average size of 50 nm, using styrene monomer, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as surfactants, and potassium persulfate (KPS) as the initiator.

The relatively high cost of all-vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) limits their widespread deployment. Enhancing the kinetics of the electrochemical reactions is needed to increase the power density and energy efficiency of the VRFB, and hence decrease the kWh cost of VRFBs. In this work, hydrothermally synthesized hydrated tungsten oxide (HWO) nanoparticles, C, and C/HWO were deposited on carbon cloth electrodes and tested as electrocatalysts for the VO/VO redox reactions.

Mechanistic effects of blending formic acid with ethanol on Pd activity towards formic acid oxidation in acidic media.

The direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) is one of the most promising direct liquid fuel cells. Pd is the most active catalyst towards formic oxidation, however, it suffers from CO-like poisoning and instability in acidic media. Blending formic acid with ethanol is known to synergistically enhance the Pt catalytic activity of Pt.

Giant clam growth in the Gulf of Aqaba is accelerated compared to fossil populations.

The health of reef-building corals has declined due to climate change and pollution. However, less is known about whether giant clams, reef-dwelling bivalves with a photosymbiotic partnership similar to that found in reef-building corals, are also threatened by environmental degradation. To compare giant clam health against a prehistoric baseline, we collected fossil and modern shells from the Gulf of Aqaba, Northern Red Sea.

Interactions between egg storage duration and broiler breeder age on egg fat content, chicken organ weights, and growth performance.

Egg storage and breeder age are between the most important factors affecting egg lipids, chicken quality, and posthatch performance. To evaluate these factors, including their interaction, the impact of egg storage duration (5, 12, and 19 D), and breeder age (47 and 67 wk) was investigated in Arbor Acres broiler eggs and chickens. Total yolk fat content, chicken organ development at hatch and at 6 D of age, and posthatch performance (at 7 D and 35 D of age) were determined.

PVC and PET microplastics in caddisfly (Lepidostoma basale) cases reduce case stability.

Caddisfly larvae occur in streams and rivers, and many caddisfly species build protective cases using material from their habitat such as sand grains. At the same time, microplastics (MPs) are regularly deposited in aquatic sediments and are incorporated into caddisfly (Lepidostoma basale) cases in the field. However, it is unknown what the effects of MP incorporation into cases might be on the health of the caddisfly larvae.

Successful Treatment of Recalcitrant Actinomycetoma of Gluteal Area with Combined Medical Treatment and Surgical Excision with Graft Reconstruction.

Mycetoma, formerly known as Madura foot, is a chronic, localized, gradually increasing in size, granulomatous exogenous infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissue with risks of bone and visceral involvement. It is unevenly found worldwide but it is endemic in tropical and subtropical countries. Two groups of mycetoma exist with similar clinical presentation; eumycetoma due to true fungi, and actinomycetoma due to aerobic bacteria from actinomycomycetes species.

Egg storage and breeder age impact on egg quality and embryo development.

Prolonged hatching egg storage (>7 days) influences internal egg quality and embryo survival during both storage and subsequent incubation. Moreover, effects of storage of hatching eggs interact with the breeder age. The aim of this review was to investigate how this interaction between storage duration and breeder age affects egg, embryo, hatchling and chicken characteristics.

Sea Urchin Granuloma of the Hands: A Case Report.

Penetrating wounds from sea urchin spines are marine injuries that may cause morbidity in humans. Seasonal fishing for abalone in Dhofar is associated with an increase in the number of these injuries, as divers may strike their extremities, especially the dorsum of hands and fingers, on the rocks where Echinoderms and juvenile abalone are anchored. The immediate effect of injuries includes pain, edema, bleeding, erythema, and rarely systemic complications.

Severe Nodulocystic Acne not Responding to Isotretinoin Therapy Successfully Treated with Oral Dapsone.

Nodulocystic acne is a severe form of acne which can result in significant damage to the skin with great impact on quality of life. Oral isotretinoin considered to be the best treatment for such cases. Although it has a high rate of success and its efficacy is well established in the treatment of nodulocystic acne, it may occasionally fail to control the disease.

A Case of Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis Successfully Treated with Low Dose Intravenous Immunoglobulins and Systemic Corticosteroid.

Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), a severe form of Stevens-Johnson syndrome, is an acute life-threatening adverse drug reaction with a mortality rate of approximately 30%. Primary treatment of TEN is usually supportive. The use of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and corticosteroids are still uncertain, as there are only a limited number of studies comparing the usefulness of these treatments.

Biochemical and histopathological effects of the stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa) venom in rats.

The Reef Stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa) is one of the most dangerous venomous fish known, and has caused occasional human fatalities. The present study was designed to examine some of the pathological effects of the venom from this fish in Sprague Dawley rats. Crude venom was extracted from venom glands of the dorsal spines of stonefish specimens collected from coral reefs in the Gulf of Aqaba (in the northeastern branch of the Red Sea).

Hepatic hydrothorax: About a hospital serie of 63 cases.

Background: Hepatic hydrothorax is a less common complication of cirrhosis with an estimated prevalence of 10- 15%. In the vast majority of cases, ascites are also present but significant pleural effusion may develop in patients without ascites. Hepatic hydrothorax is associated with cirrhosis whatever its etiology.

Predictive scores of early mortality from variceal gastrointestinal bleeding in cirrhotic patients.

Introduction: The variceal bleeding, main complication of portal hypertension during cirrhosis, is associated with high early mortality riskestimated between 15 and 20%. This highlights the necessity of predictive models that allow identifying high-risk patients raising the issue of amore aggressive therapeutic care.

Objective: To assess the performance of four scores for the prediction of cirrhotic patients' high early mortality risk due to digestive hemorrhageand to compare them to the Child-Pugh reference score.

Gastrointestinal Dysfunction and Neuropathologic Correlations in Parkinson Disease.

Introduction: Recently, an increasing interest to nonmotor symptoms of Parkinson disease (PD) has shown. Gastrointestinal dysfunction is a prominent nonmotor manifestation of PD and precedes motor symptoms for several years. Neuropathologic studies show early accumulation of α-synuclein (α-SYN) in Lewy neurites and Lewy body in the enteric nervous system (ENS) and dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus in PD.

High cell-density production of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) in a membrane bioreactor.

Agro-industrial residues with a low carbon content, such as whey, stillage or wastewater from plant oil mills are abundant and cheap. However, they cannot be used directly in highly productive industrial poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB) production, as the classical fed-batch fermentation strategy requires highly concentrated feed streams. This problem has been circumvented in this report by retaining the cells during the fermentation in the bioreactor using an external microfiltration module.
