Article Synopsis
  • A retrospective study analyzed metabolic differences between pure and impure uric acid kidney stone formers using data from patients at Yale Urology and Nephrology Clinics between 1996 and 2021.
  • Among 722 uric acid stone formers (16.8% of the total), pure stone formers were generally older, heavier, and had a higher incidence of chronic kidney disease.
  • The study found that pure uric acid stone formers had lower urinary pH and citrate levels, along with higher protein intake markers, indicating that adjusting protein consumption might help lower the risk of stone formation, especially in those with kidney issues.

Mott metal-insulator transitions possess electronic, magnetic, and structural degrees of freedom promising next-generation energy-efficient electronics. A previously unknown, hierarchically ordered, and anisotropic supercrystal state is reported and its intrinsic formation characterized in-situ during a Mott transition in a CaRuO thin film. Machine learning-assisted X-ray nanodiffraction together with cryogenic electron microscopy reveal multi-scale periodic domain formation at and below the film transition temperature (T ≈ 200-250 K) and a separate anisotropic spatial structure at and above T.

Article Synopsis
  • Kidney stone composition varies with factors like age, sex, and renal function, particularly indicated by eGFR, which influences urine chemistry.
  • A study of 811 kidney stone patients from Yale Medicine found that lower eGFR correlates with an increase in uric acid stones and a decrease in calcium stones, along with significant changes in urine parameters like pH and mineral content.
  • The findings suggest that renal function is important in understanding and managing kidney stone risks, indicating that prevention strategies may need to adjust based on a patient's kidney function and available urine or stone analysis data.

Although no known asteroid poses a threat to Earth for at least the next century, the catalogue of near-Earth asteroids is incomplete for objects whose impacts would produce regional devastation. Several approaches have been proposed to potentially prevent an asteroid impact with Earth by deflecting or disrupting an asteroid. A test of kinetic impact technology was identified as the highest-priority space mission related to asteroid mitigation.

The Ruddlesden-Popper (ABO) compounds are highly tunable materials whose functional properties can be dramatically impacted by their structural phase . The negligible differences in formation energies for different can produce local structural variations arising from small stoichiometric deviations. Here, we present a Python analysis platform to detect, measure, and quantify the presence of different -phases based on atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) images.

Microbubbles are tiny gas-filled bubbles that have a variety of applications in ultrasound imaging and therapeutic drug delivery. Microbubbles can be synthesized using a number of techniques including sonication, amalgamation, and saline shaking. These approaches can produce highly concentrated microbubble suspensions but offer minimal control over the size and polydispersity of the microbubbles.

The search of novel quasi-1D materials is one of the important aspects in the field of material science. Toroidal moment, the order parameter of ferrotoroidic order, can be generated by a head-to-tail configuration of magnetic moment. It has been theoretically proposed that 1D dimerized and antiferromagnetic (AFM)-like spin chain hosts ferrotoroidicity and has the toroidal moment composed of only two antiparallel spins.

The MEGANE instrument onboard the MMX mission will acquire gamma-ray and neutron spectroscopy data of Phobos to determine the elemental composition of the martian moon and provide key constraints on its origin. To produce accurate compositional results, the irregular shape of Phobos and its proximity to Mars must be taken into account during the analysis of MEGANE data. The MEGANE team is adapting the Small Body Mapping Tool (SBMT) to handle gamma-ray and neutron spectroscopy investigations, building on the demonstrated record of success of the SBMT being applied to scientific investigations on other spacecraft missions of irregularly shaped bodies.

We have measured the angle-resolved transverse resistivity (ARTR), a sensitive indicator of electronic anisotropy, in high-quality thin films of the unconventional superconductor SrRuO grown on various substrates. The ARTR signal, heralding the electronic nematicity or a large nematic susceptibility, is present and substantial already at room temperature and grows by an order of magnitude upon cooling down to 4 K. In SrRuO films deposited on tetragonal substrates the highest-conductivity direction does not coincide with any crystallographic axis.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on how epitaxial strain, film thickness, and electric fields influence the formation and modification of ferroelastic structures in PbTiO thin films, showing a two-variable relationship in their self-assembly.
  • - When electric fields are applied, these strain-engineered structures become flexible, particularly when specific superdomains are present, allowing for nanoscale morphologies to be created through ferroelectric switching of individual domains.
  • - However, the stability of these electrically generated structures is usually short-lived, with their durability depending on strain and thickness; stable structures are only achievable under low tensile strain and below a critical thickness, making them useful for advanced electronics.

Spin-orbit torques (SOT) in thin film heterostructures originate from strong spin-orbit interactions (SOI) that, in the bulk, generate a spin current due either to extrinsic spin-dependent, skew, or/and side-jump scattering or to intrinsic Berry curvature in the conduction bands. While most SOT studies have focused on materials with heavy metal components, the oxide perovskite SrRuO has been predicted to have a pronounced Berry curvature. Through quantification of its spin current by the SOT exerted on an adjacent Co ferromagnetic layer, we determine that SrRuO has a strongly temperature ( T)-dependent spin Hall conductivity σ , increasing with the electrical conductivity, consistent with expected behavior of the intrinsic effect in the "dirty metal" regime.

Combining multiple fast image acquisitions to mitigate scan noise and drift artifacts has proven essential for picometer precision, quantitative analysis of atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) data. For very low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) image stacks - frequently required for undistorted imaging at liquid nitrogen temperatures - image registration is particularly delicate, and standard approaches may either fail, or produce subtly specious reconstructed lattice images. We present an approach which effectively registers and averages image stacks which are challenging due to their low-SNR and propensity for unit cell misalignments.
