Background/aim: We performed a linguistic validation of the original version of the Epworth Sleep Scale (ESS) into the Moroccan dialect according to Guillemin's guidelines.

Materials And Methods: After translating the English version of the ESS according to the standard guidelines, we asked 120 healthy subjects to complete the questionnaire twice with an interval of 10 days. We assess the acceptability and internal reliability by Cronbach's alpha coefficient, while for the test-retest reproducibility we use the interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) (95% confidence interval (CI)) and the kappa coefficient.

  • Research is vital for medical advancement and integrating it into the medical curriculum is essential; this study focuses on medical students' knowledge, attitudes, and barriers towards research in a Moroccan medical school.
  • A cross-sectional study was performed with 754 medical students using an online questionnaire to gather data on their research knowledge, attitudes, and perceived challenges, while also analyzing sociodemographic correlations.
  • Results showed that while students had a positive attitude towards research, their knowledge was low, and they faced significant barriers like time constraints, lack of funding, and poor laboratory facilities; addressing these issues could boost research engagement among students.

  • The study evaluated serum albumin levels within 24 hours of admission in 371 patients with acute pancreatitis to determine their impact on outcomes and mortality over a 5-year period.
  • Findings revealed that 33.4% of patients had hypoalbuminemia, which was linked to older age and higher rates of complications, such as systemic inflammatory response syndrome and pleural effusion.
  • The results suggest that low serum albumin levels are a significant indicator for predicting persistent organ failure and increased mortality in acute pancreatitis cases.

Introduction: COVID-19 induced cytokine storm is a well-documented phenomena that contributes significantly in the disease's evolution and prognosis. Therefore, therapies such as therapeutic plasma exchange, constitute a mainstay of therapeutic management especially for critically-ill patients.

Methods: We conducted a monocentric retrospective cohort study in the Resuscitation Department of the Mohammed VI University Hospital of Oujda-Morocco, to evaluate the efficiency of therapeutic plasma exchange on critically-ill COVID-19 patients over a 6 months period.

Unlabelled: Patients suffering from end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) are particularly vulnerable to SARS-CoV-2 infection, and their risk of death is higher than for the general population. The objective was to determine the epidemiologic profile at admission and mortality among patients presenting EKSD with severe coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted in the Nephrology unit between October 2020 and February 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the rising incidence of Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and examines the role of 25OHD (vitamin D) deficiency as a potential trigger for the disease.
  • A case-control analysis was conducted with 147 T1DM patients under 19 years old compared to 147 matched controls, revealing lower average serum 25OHD levels in T1DM patients (15.02 ng/ml) versus controls (19.29 ng/ml).
  • Findings indicate a significant negative correlation between HbA1c (a measure of diabetes control) and serum 25OHD levels, emphasizing the need for awareness and potential vitamin D supplementation in children and adolescents with diabetes.

Insulin pump therapy is recommended more and more to achieve and maintain optimal glycaemic control in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. The objective of our study was to evaluate the satisfaction of patients using insulin pump therapy and to determine its effectiveness in improving metabolic control in type 1 diabetic patients. This is a retrospective, descriptive and analytical study including 20 type 1 diabetic patients treated by insulin pump, between 2017 and 2021.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic continues to be rampant with considerable morbidity and mortality worldwide since its emergence in December 2019. Several studies have focused on identifying different predictive factors of poor prognosis, including biological markers, such as C Reactive Protein among others. The objective of our work was to determine whether the CRP levels on admission to the intensive care unit are predictive of an unfavorable evolution of patients with COVID-19 through the experience of the Anesthesia and Intensive Care Unit of the University Hospital of Oujda and to compare our results with those reported in the literature.

  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a widespread condition linked to chronic liver disease, especially in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), increasing the risk of serious health complications.
  • A study assessed 180 T2DM patients without alcohol or other liver issues, finding NAFLD present in 45.6% of them, with notable fibrosis in 18.3% of cases.
  • NAFLD was significantly associated with conditions like obesity, metabolic syndrome, and hypertension, highlighting its potential to worsen health and increase cardiovascular risks in T2DM patients.*

Introduction: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is commonly seen in critically ill hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and its incidence reaches 60% in this setting. The aim of this work was to determine the prevalence, characteristics, risk factors and mortality of AKI in patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for COVID-19.

Patients And Methods: This observational retrospective case series was conducted between February 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020 at the ICU of the university hospital Mohammed VI of Oujda, Morocco.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: The consumption of nephrotoxic plants is quite frequent in Morocco and could explain the high prevalence of indeterminate nephropathy in patients with End-Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD).

Aim Of The Study: to determine, in a population of chronic hemodialysis (CHD) patients and before the occurrence of ESKD, the prevalence of the use of nephrotoxic plants, in particular, Aristolochia longa L. (Bereztam) and the etiological role of plants in the rapid progression of known and unknown nephropathy toward the end stage of chronic hemodialysis.
