Introduction: This study aims to investigate the relationship between induced sputum eosinophilia and pulmonary functions in ex-smoker asthma patients controlled with an ICS/LABA therapy.

Materials And Methods: Asthma patients who are known to use ICS/LABA regularly for at least three months, without an attack in the last month, quit smoking (5-20 pack-years) and have asthma under control (ACT> 20), and concurrent with induced sputum cytology who had spirometry and lung volume measurements were included in the study. Cytology results, induced sputum eosinophil and neutrophil counts, FEV1 (L), FEV1 (%), FVC (L), FVC (%), RV (L), RV (%) and RV/TLC (%) values of all patients were recorded.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the effectiveness of exfoliative cell cytology in diagnosing exudative pleural effusions, analyzing data from 600 patients over twenty years.
  • Findings indicate a male-to-female ratio of 2.2:1, with an average patient age of 42.8 years; 240 cases were identified as malignant, predominantly adenocarcinoma, with tuberculosis being the second most common cause.
  • The cytology testing demonstrated a sensitivity of 70.1% and specificity of 62.5%, proving it to be a useful non-invasive diagnostic tool for identifying the underlying causes of pleural effusions, even aiding in ambiguous cases.

Objectives: Multiple genetic changes are observed in malignant tumors but are rare or absent in benign conditions. Aneuploidy is the most common feature of solid tumors including lung cancer and diagnosis of malignant tumors is possible through detection of aneuploidy. The aim of this study was to investigate chromosomal abnormalities in cells from non-small cell lung cancer patients obtained bronchoscopically and to evaluate the suitability of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH).

Background: Although Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 is the common disease causing serogroup, rare serogroups can also may cause legionellosis. A 54-year-old male patient (index case) reported that he had been on a religious trip (for visiting, tomb of Ali, which is important for Shias) to Iraq with a large group (50 shia pilgrims from Kars city of Turkey) two weeks prior to admission. Due to civil war, the hotel where the patient stayed in Iraq lacked proper hygiene.

Background And Aims: Anxiety and depression are common in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The degree of lung function may not explain anxiety and depression. The aim of our study was to assess the psychological aspects of COPD, to test the BODE index (a composite score of body mass, obstruction, dyspnea and exercise capacity), and to evaluate the association between atypical cytologic findings of sputum, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and the pyschological components of the disease.

Although specific nasal provocation is an objective diagnostic test for allergic rhinitis, it can also increase the lower airway responsiveness in asthmatic patients. Our goal was to determine the value and safety of specific nasal provocation test for the diagnosis of allergic rhinitis in mild persistent asthmatic patients under low-dose inhaled steroid therapy. The study was performed on 32 mild persistent, stable, mite-sensitive allergic asthmatics (group 1), 9 mild persistent nonallergic asthmatics (group 2) and 9 healthy non-smokers (group 3).
