Background: Quality nutrition services are dependent upon the accessibility and availability of nutrition professionals. In this study, we used the World Health Organization's Workload Indicators of Staffing Need (WISN) methodology to develop a dietetic staffing norm framework and implementation tool for South African central and tertiary public hospitals.

Methods: We followed the eight step WISN methodology as a basis for this developmental study.

Proposed framework for the integration of refractive error services into the eye health ecosystem in Kenya via social enterprise.

The global burden of uncorrected refractive error demands for adoption of different approaches inclined towards scaling effective refractive error coverage. While innovative approaches such as utilization of telemedicine is being adopted by social enterprises in different parts of the world to scale refractive error service delivery, commercial entrepreneurship still dominates the optical industry in Kenya with minimal focus on accessibility and affordability. However, to achieve effective refractive error coverage across the economic pyramid, integration of enterprises inclined towards fulfilling a social mission through innovative approaches such as telemedicine is desirable.

The influence of wife abuse on women's reproductive choices inSouthern African Countries: Findings from a cross-sectional analysis of demographic and health surveys.

Understanding women's attitudes towards wife abuse and its effects on their reproductive choices is crucial for promoting gender equality in Southern Africa. However, a paucity of research has explored this relationship. Using IPUMS Demographic and Health Surveys data from 2011-2018 across eight Southern African nations, we analyzed 17,968 women's attitudes towards wife beating and their reproductive choices through a cross-sectional design and multilevel logistic regression models.

Triage test for all-oral drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) regimen: a phase IV study to assess effectiveness, feasibility, acceptability and cost-effectiveness of the Xpert MTB/XDR assay for rapid triage and treatment of DR-TB.

Introduction: The TriAD study will assess the Xpert MTB/XDR (Xpert XDR; Cepheid) assay to detect tuberculosis (TB) drug resistance in sputum testing positive for TB to rapidly triage and treat patients with a short all-oral treatment regimen.

Methods And Analysis: In this study, approximately 4800 Xpert MTB/RIF or Ultra MTB-positive patients (irrespective of rifampicin (RIF) resistance (RR) status) from several clinical sites across South Africa, Nigeria and Ethiopia will be enrolled over 18-24 months and followed-up for approximately 6 months post-TB treatment completion. Participants will be enrolled into one of two cohorts based on Xpert MTB/RIF and Xpert XDR results: () positive participants with RR in Cohort 1 (n=880) and positive RIF susceptible TB patients with isoniazid mono-resistance irrespective of presence of resistance to fluoroquinolones, second-line injectable drugs or ethionamide in Cohort 2 (n=400).

The Role of Natural Killer Cells and Their Metabolism in HIV-1 Infection.

Natural killer (NK) cells are multifaceted innate effector cells that critically influence antiviral immunity, and several protective NK cell features that modulate HIV-1 acquisition and viral control have been described. Chronic HIV-1 infection leads to NK cell impairment that has been associated with metabolic dysregulations. Therapeutic approaches targeting cellular immune metabolism represent potential novel interventions to reverse defective NK cell function in people living with HIV.

Changes in the medical admissions and mortality amongst children in four South African hospitals following the COVID-19 pandemic: A five-year review.

Vulnerable children from poor communities with high HIV and Tuberculosis(TB) burdens were impacted by COVID-19 lockdowns. Concern was raised about the extent of this impact and anticipated post-pandemic surges in mortality. Interrupted time series segmented regression analyses were done using routinely collected facility-level data of children admitted for medical conditions at four South African referral hospitals.

Background: Viral causes of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) are associated with increased mortality in children aged <5 years (U5). Human adenovirus (HAdV) has been associated with severe LRTI; however, its relationship with HIV and malnutrition in South Africa (SA) is not understood.

This exploratory study aimed to identify changes in (O-acyl)-ω-hydroxy fatty acid (OAHFA) and hydrocarbon chain (HC) unsaturation levels in meibum related to the presence and severity of MGD. Meibum samples were collected from 3 cohorts of adults with no MGD, mild-to-moderate MGD, and severe MGD in a noninterventional clinical trial (NCT01979887).

Exploring the experiences of sonography students with simulation-based learning: A perspective from South Africa.

Introduction: Simulation-based learning (SBL) is widely used in healthcare education to provide a safe environment for students to practice clinical scenarios without causing patient harm. While established in developed countries, SBL's implementation is new in South Africa; there is a lack of research addressing sonography students' experiences. This study aimed to explore and describe the experiences of Bachelor of Science (BSc) second-year sonography students using SBL for clinical training at a local University of Technology (UoT).
