Antibiotic therapy is the primary treatment for infective endocarditis (IE), yet up to 50% of patients still require surgical intervention. However, surgical intervention carries significant risks of mortality and complications for IE patients, and there remains a lack of consensus on which preoperative characteristics of infective endocarditis have a substantial impact on patient prognosis. Particularly, some IE patients develop periannular abscesses, leading to more severe complications.

CircRNAs are abnormally expressed in various cancers and play an important role in the occurrence and development of cancers. However, their biological functions and the underlying molecular mechanisms in pancreatic cancer (PC) metastasis are incompletely understood. Differentially expressed circRNAs were identified by second-generation transcriptome sequencing in three pairs of PC tissues and adjacent tissues.

Background: Due to the great heterogeneity of gastric cancer (GC), the prognosis of patients within a stage is very different. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the high risk factors for postoperative recurrence and metastasis and take appropriate therapeutic strategies to improve the prognosis of patients. In this study, we aimed to explore the prognostic significance of preoperative and postoperative serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), carbohydrate antigen 19 - 9 (CA19-9) and carbohydrate antigen 72 - 4 (CA72-4) in patients with stage I, II and III GC who underwent radical gastrectomy.

Background: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) play important roles in the occurrence and development of cancer and chemoresistance. DNA damage repair contributes to the proliferation of cancer cells and resistance to chemotherapy-induced apoptosis. However, the role of circRNAs in the regulation of DNA damage repair needs clarification.

Rice ratooning, the fast outgrowth of dormant buds on stubble, is an important cropping practice in rice production. However, the low ratooning ability (RA) of most rice varieties restricts the application of this cost-efficient system, and the genetic basis of RA remains unknown. In this study, we dissected the genetic architecture of RA by a genome-wide association study in a natural rice population.

Although circular RNAs (circRNAs) have recently garnered interest as disease markers, they have been relatively poorly studied as a biomarker in colorectal cancer (CRC). In this study, we aimed to screen the exosome-derived circRNAs in CRC and explore their potential as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers of CRC METHODS: Exosomes were extracted from the plasma using a kit and validated by immunoblotting, transmission electron microscopy, and particle size analysis. The microarray datasets were employed to identify differentially-expressed circRNAs from plasma exosomes.

Numerous mechanisms involved in promoting cancer cell survival under nutrient starvation have been described. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have emerged as critical players in colorectal cancer (CRC) progression, but the role of lncRNAs in the progression of CRC under nutrient starvation has not been well clarified. Here, we identified a lncRNA, LINC01615, that was significantly upregulated in response to serum starvation.

Background: Recently, the efficacy and outcomes of total laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (TLPD) have been well established; however, specific data regarding the clinical outcomes of total laparoscopic versus open pancreaticoduodenectomy (OPD) are still limited. The present study aims to directly compare the clinical and oncological outcomes following TLPD versus OPD at a single institution.

Methods: The clinical data of 127 consecutive patients who underwent TLPD (n = 69) and OPD (n = 58) and were admitted to our department between January 2017 and June 2019 were analysed retrospectively.

High temperatures cause huge yield losses in rice. Heat-shock factors (Hsfs) are key transcription factors which regulate the expression of heat stress-responsive genes, but natural variation in and functional characterization of Hsfs have seldom been reported. A significant heat response locus was detected via a genome-wide association study (GWAS) using green leaf area as an indicative trait.

Abscisic acid (ABA) is a critical phytohormone that regulates multiple physiological processes including plant growth and stress tolerance. The core ABA signaling pathway has been well established, but genetic variations mediating ABA responses remain largely unknown. In this study, we performed genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify loci and genes associated with ABA sensitivity (reflected by seed germination inhibition by ABA) in a panel of 425 rice accessions.

Background: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) play important roles in cancer progression and metabolism regulation. Serine/glycine metabolism supports the growth of cancer cells by contributing to their anabolic demands and epigenome as well as by regulating their redox state. However, the role of circRNA in the regulation of serine/glycine metabolism has not been well elucidated.

Currently, more than one hundred types of RNA modifications have been found, and many of these modifications are reversible and dynamically regulated. RNA modifications can regulate RNA stability and translation and are thus involved in multiple biological activities. Recently, RNA modifications have been shown to have important roles in the regulation of cell death.

Background: Here we report on a 16-year-old female patient with typical Cushingoid features who was admitted because of purple striae, menostasis, and microsomia for 1 year, and laboratory tests showed hyperglycemia and hypokalemia.

Methods: For diagnosis, we employed a hormone test, abdominal and pituitary computed tomography scan, ultrasonography to detect endocrine and cardiocutaneous lesions. DNA sequencing to detect PRKAR1A gene mutation to make differential diagnosis for Cushing Syndrome.

Many plants have evolved a drought escape (DE) mechanism to shorten their life cycle when facing water-deficit conditions. While drought tolerance has been intensively investigated, the genetic and molecular mechanisms of DE remain elusive. In this study, we found that low water-deficit treatment (LWT) at the early stage of rice development can trigger early flowering and reduced tiller numbers.

Submergence and drought are major limiting factors for crop production. However, very limited studies have been reported on the distinct or overlapping mechanisms of plants in response to the two water extremes. Here we report an ETHYLENE OVERPRODUCER 1-like gene (OsETOL1) that modulates differentially drought and submergence tolerance in rice (Oryza sativa L.

Plant responses to abiotic stresses are coordinated by arrays of growth and developmental programs. Phytohormones such as abscisic acid (ABA) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) play critical roles in developmental progresses and environmental responses through complex signalling networks. However, crosstalk between the two hormones at the biosynthesis level remains largely unknown.

Plant responses to abiotic stresses are coordinated by arrays of growth and developmental processes. Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and abscisic acid (ABA) play critical roles in developmental programmes and environmental responses, respectively, through complex signalling and metabolism networks. However, crosstalk between the two phytohormones in the stress responses remains largely unknown.
