This study demonstrates that although after cigarette smoking the QT(Bc) values increase, the QT(Fc) and QT(Lc) values remained unchanged, and an increased sympathetic response was evident. The discrepancies between the results seen by different QT correction formulas emphasize the importance of selecting an accurate method for heart rate correction when evaluating and interpreting alterations in QT values.

We present large-scale simulations of the diffusion constant D of a random composite consisting of aligned platelets with aspect ratio a/b>>1 in a matrix (with diffusion constant D0) and find that D/D(0)=1/(1+c(1)x+c(2)x(2)), where x=av(f)/b and v(f) is the platelet volume fraction. We demonstrate that for large aspect ratio platelets the pair term (x(2)) dominates suggesting large property enhancements for these materials. However, a small amount of face-to-face ordering of the platelets markedly degrades the efficiency of platelet reinforcement.

Alpha-glucuronidases, components of an ensemble of enzymes central to the recycling of photosynthetic biomass, remove the alpha-1,2 linked 4-O-methyl glucuronic acid from xylans. The structure of the alpha-glucuronidase, GlcA67A, from Pseudomonas cellulosa reveals three domains, the central of which is a (beta/alpha)(8) barrel housing the catalytic apparatus. Complexes of the enzyme with the individual reaction products, either xylobiose or glucuronic acid, and the ternary complex of both glucuronic acid and xylotriose reveal a "blind" pocket which selects for short decorated xylooligosaccharides substituted with the uronic acid at their nonreducing end, consistent with kinetic data.
