A total of 93 wild type Escherichia coli of human origin (mostly representing intestinal isolates from Hungary) were examined for the presence of Shiga-like-toxin (SLT) genes using SLT-I, SLT-II and enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) specific DNA probes. The structural genes of the above specificity were labelled by random priming using 32-P-dCTP.

K88 is also associated with some ETEC isolated from weaned pigs. Many ETEC isolates from weaned pigs do not express known adhesins and are termed 4P-.

In the Boitchev-Andreiev operation the tip of the coracoid with the muscles having their origin here, is chiselled and after a transduction under the subscapular muscle it is refixed to its original place. One relapse from 28 cases was found in a mean follow up time of 3 years, in 2 cases subluxation was found. The average limitation of lateral rotation was 6.

Two such DH sites, I and V, are present both in human hepatoma (HepG2) and colon carcinoma (CaCo-2) cells that express the gene but absent from HeLa cells that do not express the gene. These DH sites map near sequence elements that have been highly conserved between the human and mouse genes.

Strains 2134 and 2171 were isolated from pigs that had diarrhea after weaning attributable to enterotoxigenic E coli infection. We found that both strains of E coli adhered in the ileum and caused diarrhea in pigs of both age groups.

In the first experiment, 16 principal pigs were inoculated orogastrically with ETEC strain 2134 (serogroup O157: H19) or 2171 (serogroup 0141:H4), and eight control pigs were not inoculated. In the second experiment, 24 principals were inoculated with ETEC strain 2134, and 12 controls were inoculated with a nonenterotoxigenic strain of E.

The tested substance had no mutagenic activity on yeast, bacteria and cultured fibroblast cells. Changes in mitotic activity and cell division abnormalities were observed after BA treatment in shallot root-tip cells.

Neither strain adhered to isolated intestinal brush borders of newborn (1-day-old) pigs in the presence of mannose. However, mannose-resistant adhesion occurred when brush borders from 10-day- and 3- and 6-week-old pigs were used.

Male and female mice, 200 of each sex per experimental group, were irradiated individually at 110 days of age.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe arrangement of regulatory elements along the apolipoprotein B promoter region (positions -898 to +1) has been examined in transient transfection experiments performed in HepG2 and Hep3B (hepatic) and CaCo-2 (intestinal) cell lines, all of which express the apoB gene, and also in Chinese hamster ovary cells, which do not express the gene. The overall distribution of positive and negative regulatory segments was very similar in the two hepatoma cell lines (HepG2 and Hep3B) but different from that observed in the colon carcinoma cells (CaCo-2). Thus, whereas 260 base pairs of 5'-flanking sequence were sufficient for maximal expression of the promoter in HepG2 cells, only 139 nucleotides were required for maximal expression in CaCo-2 cells.

This "reducer" effect was detected in transient transfection experiments performed with hepatic (HepG2 and Hep3B) cells as well as intestinal (CaCo-2) cells. It appears to be specific for the apolipoprotein B promoter because it did not affect expression from the heterologous thymidine kinase promoter.

In this non-purulent acute-subacute inflammatory reaction, the lavage fibronectin decreased rapidly three hours after the incubation and then a marked gradual elevation was observed, which persisted throughout the whole two-week process, while plasma fibronectin concentrations were not altered significantly. Changes in the levels of lavage fibronectin may be an important sign for the control of the inflammatory reaction activity in the lungs.

Tumor cells from a murine fibrosarcoma (FSa) produce plasminogen activator (PA), a protease that converts the zymogen plasminogen into the trypsin-like enzyme plasmin. Several studies indicate that tumor cell invasion is accompanied by proteolysis and that PA, generated by highly malignant cells, is by far the most ubiquitous protease associated with malignant transformation. Subpopulations of FSa cells were isolated by using density gradient centrifugation and the ability of these populations to form lung colonies was compared with their associated levels of PA production.
