Article Synopsis
  • This study explored how changes in the retinal artery angle impact metamorphopsia (visual distortion) in patients with idiopathic epiretinal membrane (ERM) who underwent vitrectomy surgery.
  • Thirty-seven patients were analyzed, with improvements in visual acuity and metamorphopsia scores noted post-surgery; specifically, the retinal artery angle increased significantly post-operation.
  • The research found that the change in retinal artery angle (pYCA) was linked to improvements in metamorphopsia, particularly in patients with less visual acuity improvement, indicating its potential use as a predictor for visual recovery post-surgery.

During anuran metamorphosis from herbivorous tadpoles to carnivorous frogs, the gastrointestinal (GI) tract undergoes drastic remodeling, such as the formation of the stomach-intestine boundary and the development of the pyloric sphincter at the posterior end of the stomach. However, the morphogenetic process and molecular mechanisms of how the pyloric sphincter is formed during metamorphosis, instead of during embryogenesis as in amniotes, are largely uninvestigated. Using the African clawed frog Xenopus laevis, we histologically examined the development of the pylorus region from embryonic to froglet stages and performed spatiotemporal gene expression analyses.

The development of optoelectronically-active soft materials is drawing attention to the application of soft electronics. A room-temperature solvent-free liquid obtained by modifying a π-conjugated moiety with flexible yet bulky alkyl chains is a promising functional soft material. Tuning the elastic modulus (G') is essential for employing optoelectronically-active alkyl-π liquids in deformable devices.

Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) is a vision-threatening complication of diabetes mellitus (DM). Systemic and intraocular factors are intricately related to PDR, and vitreous fluid (VF) cytokines are representative intraocular biomarkers. However, the associations between systemic factors and VF cytokines and their influence on PDR pathology are unclear.

Alkyl-π functional molecular liquids (FMLs) are of interest for fabricating soft electronic devices due to their fluidic nature and innate optoelectronic functions from the π-conjugated moiety. However, predictable development of alkyl-π FMLs with the desired liquid and optoelectronic properties is challenging. A series of alkyl-distyrylbenzene (DSB) liquids was studied in terms of the substituent position effect by attaching 2-octyldodecyl chains at (2,4-), (2,5-), (2,6-), and (3,5-).

This work developed an electrically conductive thermosetting resin composite that transitioned from a liquid to solid without using solvents in response to an increase in temperature. This material has applications as a matrix for carbon fiber reinforced plastics. The composite comprised polyaniline (PANI) together with dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid (DBSA) as a liquid dopant in addition to a radical polymerization system made of triethylene glycol dimethacrylate with a peroxide initiator.

Purpose: To compare the foveal microstructures, such as the prevalence of epiretinal proliferation (EP) and residual ellipsoid zone (EZ), in eyes with lamellar macular hole (LMH), epiretinal retinal membrane (ERM) foveoschisis and macular pseudohole (MPH), and to investigate the association of the foveal microstructure with visual functions.

Method: In addition to the prevalence of EP, we calculated the residual EZ index within 1mm and 3 mm (rEZ1 and rEZ3) in all examined eyes. Comparisons were conducted to baseline characteristics (logMAR visual acuity [logMAR VA], metamorphopsia score [Mave], central retinal thickness [CRT], the prevalence of EP, rEZ1 and rEZ3) between MPH, ERM foveoschisis and LMH subgroups.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines a 47-year-old woman with systemic amyloidosis and her visual acuity changes over time, initially good at age 41 but deteriorating significantly by age 47.
  • Imaging techniques, including optical coherence tomography (OCT), were used to track the development of eye conditions associated with amyloidosis, showing worsening of scotoma and distinct findings like choroidal deposits and pigmentary changes.
  • The findings suggest that patients with amyloidosis-related chorioretinopathy can initially preserve vision despite retinal amyloid deposits, indicating that significant visual decline may not occur until years after the first signs of the disease.

Optoelectronically active viscous liquids are ideal for fabricating foldable/stretchable electronics owing to their excellent deformability and predictable π-unit-based optoelectronic functions, which are independent of the device shape and geometry. Here we show, unprecedented 'liquid electret' devices that exhibit mechanoelectrical and electroacoustic functions, as well as stretchability, have been prepared using solvent-free liquid porphyrins. The fluidic nature of the free-base alkylated-tetraphenylporphyrins was controlled by attaching flexible and bulky branched alkyl chains at different positions.

Metal-free magnetic mixed micelles (mean diameter: 16 nm) composed of biocompatible surfactant Tween 80 and hydrophobic pyrrolidine-N-oxyl radical were prepared by mixing them in phosphate-buffered saline. The magnetic mixed micelles were characterized by dynamic light scattering and small angle neutron scattering measurements. The stability of the micelles is found to depend on the length of alkyl side chain in the nitroxide compounds and degree of unsaturation in the hydrophobic chain in the surfactant.

Novel regioisomeric alkylated-naphthalene liquids were designed and synthesized. In the solvent-free liquid state, 1-alkyloxy regioisomers showed excimeric luminescence, whereas 2-alkyloxy analogues exhibited monomer-rich luminescence features. Correlations among the molecular structures and the photophysical, calorimetric, and rheological properties are presented, demonstrating the impact of regioisomerism on the alkylated-chromophore liquid systems.

Solvent-free, nonvolatile, room-temperature alkylated-π functional molecular liquids (FMLs) are rapidly emerging as a new generation of fluid matter. However, precision design to tune their physicochemical properties remains a serious challenge because the properties are governed by subtle π-π interactions among functional π-units, which are very hard to control and characterize. Herein, we address the issue by probing π-π interactions with highly sensitive pyrene-fluorescence.

Because changes in the mechanical properties of bone are closely related to trabecular bone remodeling, methods that consider the temporal morphological changes induced by adaptive remodeling of trabecular bone are needed to estimate long-term fracture risk and bone quality in osteoporosis. We simulated bone remodeling using simplified and pig trabecular bone models and estimated the morphology of healthy and osteoporotic cases. We then displayed the fracture risk of the remodeled models based on a cumulative histogram from high stress.
