Context: Runners often experience acute/chronic pain due to pre-existing structural somatic dysfunction and/or acquired various overuse injuries of the lower extremity, specifically affecting the ligaments, tendons, muscles, and bones. Common structural and function dysfunctions include but are not limited to patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), Achilles tendonitis, iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS), ligamentous and muscle tears, muscle sprains/strains, stress fractures, pes planus, plantar fasciitis, and shin splints.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to assess the correlation between acute and chronic pain, overuse injuries, and observational and palpatory findings upon evaluation to establish common trends of somatic dysfunctions and determine possible etiology of the pain/injury.

False political narratives are nearly inescapable on social media in the United States. They are a particularly acute problem for Latinos, and especially for those who rely on Spanish-language social media for news and information. Studies have shown that Latinos are vulnerable to misinformation because they rely more heavily on social media and messaging platforms than non-Hispanic whites.

Simulation-Based Training in Clinical Event Debriefing Improves Leadership Performance.

Objectives: Clinical event debriefing (CED) improves healthcare team performance and patient outcomes. Most pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) physicians do not receive formal training in leading CED. Our objectives were to develop a CED curriculum and evaluate its effect on performance, knowledge, comfort, and clinical practice.

Paths to learning: How residents navigate transience in supervisory relationships in the emergency department.

Background: Strong relationships between trainees and physician supervisors can positively influence how trainees navigate workplace learning. How trainees act and learn in clinical workplaces characterized by rapidly developing and dissolving supervisory pairings is less well understood. This study uses the emergency department (ED) to examine the impact of transient supervisory relationships on how residents approach clinical learning opportunities.

Networks are designed to ensure proper functioning and sustained operability of the underlying systems. However, disruptions are generally unavoidable. Internal interactions and external environmental effects can lead to the removal of nodes or edges, resulting in unexpected collective behavior.

Usability Testing Via Simulation: Optimizing the NEAR4PEM Preintubation Checklist With a Human Factors Approach.

Objectives: To inform development of a preintubation checklist for pediatric emergency departments via multicenter usability testing of a prototype checklist.

Methods: This was a prospective, mixed methods study across 7 sites in the National Emergency Airway Registry for Pediatric Emergency Medicine (NEAR4PEM) collaborative. Pediatric emergency medicine attending physicians and senior fellows at each site were first oriented to a checklist prototype, including content previously identified using a modified Delphi approach.

Virtual Interviews and the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Match Geography: A National Survey.

Introduction: Virtual interviews (VI) are now a permanent part of pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) recruitment, especially given the cost and equity advantages. Yet inability to visit programs in person can impact decision-making, leading applicants to apply to more programs. Considerable scholarly attention has been paid to understanding belief in online misinformation, with a particular focus on social networks. However, the dominant role of search engines in the information environment remains underexplored, even though the use of online search to evaluate the veracity of information is a central component of media literacy interventions. Although conventional wisdom suggests that searching online when evaluating misinformation would reduce belief in it, there is little empirical evidence to evaluate this claim.

Background: Pediatric requirements include procedural skills training such as peripheral intravenous (PIV) catheter placement and bag-mask ventilation (BMV). Clinical experiences may be limited and temporally remote from scheduled teaching. Just-in-time (JIT) training prior to utilization can promote skill development and mitigate learning decay.

Structure and function in artificial, zebrafish and human neural networks.

Network science provides a set of tools for the characterization of the structure and functional behavior of complex systems. Yet a major problem is to quantify how the structural domain is related to the dynamical one. In other words, how the diversity of dynamical states of a system can be predicted from the static network structure? Or the reverse problem: starting from a set of signals derived from experimental recordings, how can one discover the network connections or the causal relations behind the observed dynamics? Despite the advances achieved over the last two decades, many challenges remain concerning the study of the structure-dynamics interplay of complex systems.

Background: Videolaryngoscopy allows real-time procedural coaching during intubation. This study sought to develop and assess an online curriculum to train pediatric emergency medicine attending physicians to deliver procedural coaching during intubation.

Methods: Curriculum development consisted of semistructured interviews with 12 pediatric emergency medicine attendings with varying levels of airway expertise analyzed using a constructivist grounded theory approach.

Management of the Difficult Airway.

Airway management is a fundamental component of care during resuscitation of critically ill and injured children. In addition to predicted anatomic and physiologic differences in children compared with adults, certain conditions can predict potential difficulty during pediatric airway management. This review presents approaches to identifying pediatric patients in whom airway management is more likely to be difficult, and discusses strategies to address such challenges.

Development of a paediatric airway management checklist for the emergency department: a modified Delphi approach.

There is widespread concern that foreign actors are using social media to interfere in elections worldwide. Yet data have been unavailable to investigate links between exposure to foreign influence campaigns and political behavior. Using longitudinal survey data from US respondents linked to their Twitter feeds, we quantify the relationship between exposure to the Russian foreign influence campaign and attitudes and voting behavior in the 2016 US election.
