The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical performance of the CA 15-3 assay on Elecsys systems in an international multicenter study (11 centers). A total of 1326 single samples (272 apparently healthy individuals, 34 pregnant women, 308 benign diseases, 273 cancers other than breast, 439 breast cancer) and 538 serial samples of 98 breast cancer patients during follow-up were analyzed. 95% of values in healthy individuals were below 25 kU/L, and 88% in benign breast diseases, respectively.

Background: Randomized clinical trials have demonstrated that the use of statins in heart transplant patients lowers cholesterol levels and significantly reduces mortality and the development of transplant vasculopathy. The aim of the present study was to test these effects and the safety of statin therapy over an 8-year period.
Methods And Results: In 1991, a prospective, randomized, unmasked study was initiated to compare the efficacy of simvastatin, started on the fourth postoperative day (n=35), with that of dietary therapy alone (n=37).
Background: This study evaluated the prognostic value of a three-grade staging system of spinal involvement using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with multiple myeloma and determined its usefulness as an independent parameter in the staging system of Durie and Salmon.
Methods: Seventy-seven previously untreated patients with multiple myeloma underwent MRI of the thoracic and lumbar spine with unenhanced T1-weighted spin echo and short-tau inversion time inversion recovery sequences. The patients were evaluated according to their infiltration patterns and the extent of bone marrow involvement was staged using a three-grade scale: Stage I, no focal or diffuse infiltration; Stage II, 1-10 foci or mild diffuse infiltration; Stage III, more than 10 foci or strong diffuse infiltration.
Cave bears (Ursus spelaeus) existed in Europe and western Asia until the end of the last glaciation some 10,000 years ago. To investigate the genetic diversity, population history, and relationship among different cave bear populations, we have determined mitochondrial DNA sequences from 12 cave bears that range in age from about 26,500 to at least 49,000 years and originate from nine caves. The samples include one individual from the type specimen population, as well as two small-sized high-Alpine bears.

We found that elevated pre-operative serum marker values were correlated with early relapse (cancer antigen 15-3; P=0.0003) and death from disease (carcinoembryonic antigen, cancer antigen 15-3; P=0.

We present a rare case of malignant chondroid syringoma of the hand in a 37-year-old man. Ray amputation with coverage by an island reverse flow forearm flap gave a good final result. There have been no signs of recurrence during a follow up of five years.

1alpha,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1alpha,25(OH)2D3) increases the binding of transforming growth factor beta1(TGF beta1) via TGF beta receptors to the surface of human osteoblasts. The increase in TGF beta receptors induced by 1alpha,25(OH)2D3 is dependent on increases in TGF beta secretion induced by 1alpha,25(OH)2D3, since antibodies directed against TGF beta block the increase in TGF beta1 binding. The increase in TGF beta type I and II receptors on cell surfaces following 1alpha,25(OH)2D3 treatment is associated with increases in receptor mRNA concentrations.

The detection limit and the cut-off were determined in a method comparison with Elecsys Troponin T using a total of 365 samples from patients with suspected acute coronary syndromes and 91 samples from healthy blood donors or non-cardiological patients. The analytical specificity was determined by measuring 1271 blood samples from blood donors without any myocardial injury.

During cell death, particularly during apoptosis, endonucleases are activated that cleave the chromatin into multiple oligo- and mononucleosomes. Subsequently, these nucleosomes are packed into apoptotic bodies and are engulfed by macrophages or neighboring cells.

Despite the absence of trauma, a provisional diagnosis of mallet finger led to treatment using a short dorsal splint. Four months later the flexion had increased and included the proximal interphalangeal joint.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of preoperative serum levels of CEA and/or CA 19-9 and the classical prognostic factors (age, sex, tumor infiltration and staging) in 495 patients.
Patients And Methods: The retrospective study was performed on frozen sera (stored at -70 degrees C) of patients with histologically proven colorectal cancer.
Fifty-eight patients with congenital hand abnormalities underwent 65 toe-to-hand transfers. Symbrachydactyly (51 cases) was the most frequent indication. Forty-seven second toe-to-hand transfers were performed in 44 patients.

Functionally active antithrombin can be quantified by chromogenic substrate assays utilizing the heparin cofactor activity of antithrombin and the inhibition rates of thrombin or of activated factor X (FXa). Thrombin-based assays but not FXa-based assays may overestimate the antithrombin activity due to their sensitivity toward heparin cofactor II. We focused on the question whether an overestimation of antithrombin activity by thrombin-based assays involves the risk of misdiagnosing antithrombin-deficient individuals as being non-deficient.

Twenty male patients undergoing elective surgery were randomly assigned to receive either isoflurane or desflurane anaesthesia. Alpha glutathione S-transferase concentrations and aminotransferase activities were measured at induction of anaesthesia (t0), 15 min (t1), 90 min after induction (t2), end of surgery (t3) and 2 h thereafter (t4).

In 550 patients with breast cancer without known metastases the levels of the serum tumour markers CEA und CA 15-3 were determined preoperatively and during follow-up. The prognostic relevance of these markers for recurrence (n = 128/487) and death of disease (n = 55/550) was evaluated in relation to established prognostic factors.

We therefore investigated neuropsychological tasks (attention, executive, visual-spatial, working memory) associated with frontal and parietal cortical function. Thirteen catatonic patients, diagnosed as catatonic according to criteria by Rosebush and Bush, were compared with 13 psychiatric non-catatonic controls (matched with regard to underlying psychiatric diagnosis, age, sex, and medication), and 13 age- and sex-matched healthy controls.

Serum levels of Interleukin-6 (IL-6), a proinflammatory cytokine, are increased in early stages of inflammatory diseases such as infection and sepsis. Assay systems which permit its measurement within a few hours and as a single measurement have not been reported so far. We therefore evaluated a now commercially available automated method for IL-6 measurement on the Cobas Core immunological analyzer (Roche Diagnostic Systems) which enables single IL-6 measurement within about 1 hour.

The activity of total alkaline phosphatase, gamma glutamyl transferase, CEA and CA 15-3 was also determined. The sensitivity of bone alkaline phosphatase in bone metastases detection was 39%, of electrophoresis (total alkaline phosphatase and specific isoenzymes) 48% and of enzymes and tumor markers together 85% (n = 62).

In the present study we examined the effectiveness of motor imagery in the acquisition of movement invariants in two grapho-motor trajectorial learning tasks with differing visuospatial components: 'Ideogram drawing' and 'connecting circles'. Two subject groups were studied: An imagery group, which underwent 10 min of motor imagery training and a control group, which practised a control visuomotor task over the same period of time.
